Good morning….forewarning this is a long post, lots of writing, lots of pictures, lots of things I am loving this week, so sit down, relax, pour yourself another cup of coffee or wine.?Hope you are having a great week. With the weather finally calming down from temperatures I felt like I was melting in, things have gotten better and more tolerable. Something sad happened yesterday, I was out doing errands and the huge neon yellow “going out of business” signs draped over Borders caught my eye. I was due for a fresh supply of magazines so figured I would pop in. I walked into utter madness, people buzzing all over the place and I spied a line with at least two or three dozen impatient customers, not the usual “happy to be a chilling in a bookstore” customers I am used to seeing. I saw the tape sectioning off the now closed cafe/coffee shop while rejected books and magazines lay disheveled and all over the place. I looked at the store in this disarray, a place that had welcomed me many an afternoon or evening with open and cozy arms with its orderly shelves brimming with endless reading possibilities. It made me sad because I had a darn good relationship with Borders and it was often my sanctuary to where I escaped to my special place, to decompress, unwind and broaden my mind with?a cup of hot java in hand. I have so many great memories there and my first reaction?when I walked into all the activity was “this is what it used to be like during regular business hours” now its only this way because things are being sold for 40%.

?I felt a pang of nostalgia and true sadness at what this represents, things are changing so fast, moving in such a progressive lightning fast direction that I feel like the things that we relied upon to calm and slow us down are practically non existent! Tell me whats more relaxing than going into a book store, to me not much, except maybe being on a beach alone with an IV drip of Pina Coladas or Pinot Grigio and a juicy book, but not much else. Now I hear Barnes and Nobles is in trouble too. I for one, am not ready to surrender myself and give up the feel and smell of a brand new book to a techy gadget meant to replace buying books forever. Long live the book store!!!!!!!!?

I am sorry I got carried away in my venting but seriously this has/had me really bummed. So I mourn for yet another past favorite, first Southern Accents and now Borders. RIP, Borders. You will be sorely missed. This week I start with my usual updates. Things are really moving and shaking over at the house. I finally can envision living there which admittedly is a first. Exciting, overwhelming and loads of work, but it is a wonderful thing and its so fantastic to be in the home stretch! So here we go…..

HOUSE UPDATES. Lots going on even if it seems like its going slowly. The details can be a long drawn out process but rest assured, things are moving along quite swiftly. Painters are busy finishing first coat upstairs, carpet has been ordered, trim is getting downstairs, gutters are being put in, driveway being put in, electrical and plumbing doing their finishing touches, we will have AC within a few days..woo hoo! This is very important as the finisher?starts staining the breakfast room and for the kitchen cabinets…so plenty going on. The porch is done all except for one small section, its ready to stain the ceiling and have floors put in…so here is a recap on all that’s happened this week……..

Porch basically done!
Mock ups of spindles, this is the one we are going with….
A few different ones we were experimenting with…Don and Co. are masters!!
The cardboard version and then you have…..
The real deal, in wood

Then the living room Versailles Parquet floor started getting put in, (not stained yet)

Trim work moving along on first floor hallway

They finished this doorway from family room looking into kitchen..love it! Thanks Don

In family room looking out….

Kitchen moving along….slowly but surely we are getting there!

I like this detail….where the sinks will go

Back mudroom woodworking moving along….
The back stairs in the works

Four of the carpets for the boys room and guest room……

Vanity for sons bath, its a very very dark mahogany
Bow shaped vanity getting installed in guest room
Shower getting the plumbing
Close up with mirror
Sons bath getting vanity installed….
First official door knob was put on…yippee!!

Love the door knob, I wanted ant. brass, hubs wanted polished, gotta pick your battles, its still a beautiful knob
Hubby’s shower almost done
Mud room wood working in progress

Going into living room from porch
Side door
Driveway Belgian block was just completed…

MY NEW FAVORITE HAND SOAP. Best part is its 3.99 for a big bottle at Target! And they must get some kind of special discont because when I looked this up online, saw its selling for between $5-8 online. Actually the truly best part is this is darn good hand soap, it lathers nicely, smells wonderfully with a scent that lingers as much as a nice hand lotion and I am a sucker for anything that makes me feel nostalgic for something old fashioned looking!

anything. I was thinking recently how I will of course, want to send out moving cards and found this wonderful line from Duet which features letter pressed stationary..and its all drool worthy gorgeous! Take a look! Click here to see more….

They also make adorable and beautiful baby announcements!

CHIC SUMMER CLOTHING. I love tunics, light sundresses in fun prints for the summer, throw on a piece of turquoise or coral and you are good to go. Amongst many of the lines I like for summer, I discovered Gretchen Scott about five years ago and add to my collection every summer. The price point is fair, her things are all cotton, silk or linen and she features so many great tropical summery prints…love her eye. I think of her line as one part southern belle meets one part island chic. See what you think and click here to see her line.

And then she makes these adorable pareos….love the prints! (sorry for getting carried away but its such a fun line) But these are as great as a beach/pool coverup as they are wrapped around your neck on a cool summer evening, think white pants, white top and gold sandals with one of these goodies….tres chic!

A GREAT BOOK. I am a bit behind in my summer reading, normally I get through five or six solid books, but this summer I have just completed a second. But it is one worth recommending…..Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese, is a riveting and spellbinding story. Its his first book and is highly acclaimed, already winning all kinds of awards. I had a hard time putting it down. Have you read it? Click here to find out more……

A TOTALLY RANDOM SITE. OK I know this venturing a bit off my normal “area of expertise” (whatever that may be)?but I found this and couldnt’ believe how cute and imaginative these were!! I mean seriously these are pancakes…as hard as that is to believe! And this Jim dude has an entire blog all about the incredible pancakes he turns into works of art…..I kid you not. Man, my kids would be pea green with envy over the kinds of breakfasts his kids are treated to every morning! Check these out….I mean seriously don’t you have an extra hour every morning to make caterpillar and T-Rex pancakes? LOL…..really amazing though! Just in case you want to follow this pancake master, click here to go to his blog.

She looks happy!

How can I top bee hive pancakes? Think I am going to stop now while I ahead…..best to end on a high ( and delicious note) I am suddenly craving pancakes and will settle for my always crooked, barely a circle somewhat very unprofessional looking (Jim would be appalled) BUT DELICIOUS pancakes…..enjoy your Thursday and you know I always love to know if there is anything you are loving this Thursday….do tell!

The porch looks fabulous already. Love all the detail – the spindles, parquet floors, the wood panelling inside, kitchen detail – amazing! I have been to Versailles and this certainly captures those beautiful elements. Purchased the book but have not read it yet..

I am loving your house! So beautiful!! I would secretly have to walk around every now and then with a tiara on~this is major league Tina! How on earth you write such a detailed blog while managing this project is mind blowing, but speaks to your capacity for multi-tasking. I would be completely absorbed and maybe overwhelmed with decisions, and you seem to make them with ease. Of course you are very organized so that is helpful. I was showing hubs the belgian block driveway. I love that, and will there be asphalt or pavers or crushed stone for the drive? Such a fun journey to be on with you.
And I love those tunics too~the perfect summer outfit.

You are really entering the home stretch. Your millwork looks absolutely beautiful!! It’s always my favorite part of a house I think!! I have heard of Duet – and I just adore letterpress so I can’t wait to see your moving announcements. So sad about Borders – I’m most definitely a book girl. Stay cool!!

Hi Tina. Loads to love this week. Your porch and I am calling is a Loggia is so beautiful and I can’t wait to see what you going to do with it. Adore your drive it looks like you have wonderful woodland on your property. My other favourite thing is the parquest flooring. What colour are you staining it? I love the colour it is!

There is absolutely nothing in the world that makes me happier than landing in the old second hand book stores in Cape Town for a lazy afternoon. In fact if they locked me in for the night I would be happy as anything. I agree. long live the book and the magazine. Can’t ever ever imagine a tehno devise in my hands>>ewww!

Hugs

Love seeing all the new updates on the house. The view of the house as you come up the driveway is so perfect. Very well thought out. I am with you on the Borders closing thing. Our local store closed this past March and it was so sad and hard to see. I went in to get magazines also but they were ALL gone.
Have a wonderful weekend Tina!

Where or where do I begin? Ok this house,
seroiusly is too beautiful for words.
Do you walk around pinching yourself
every time you are there? I sure would,
it is out of this world and this is really
the exciting part you are entering! Cannot
wait to see as you start to decorate!
I so agree about Borders, and you described
the experience that it was for so many of us
so well. Very sad for me too.
Love those tunics! Going to go visit, I wear those
types of things all summer long. Took the name
of the book down, looking for a good one to
take on vacation. Last those pancakes, too cute, will
not show to my girls or they will be expecting
those in the morning, and I am not a cook!
Excellent post- so enjoyed the house pictures.

The pancakes are adorable! I’m always trying to be creative in the kitchen for my kids. I need to show these to them!

You house “wows” me every Thursday! That’s all I have to say! 🙂 It’s a dream home.

Amazing. Your house is just stunning. I feel like I write the same thing on here each time, but it’s true!! You porch makes memorizes me! The brick, the arches… perfection. And those living room floors… don’t even get me started on the woodwork… A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. Love following your blog!

It’s my favorite day again…and you did not disappoint!! It is all coming together so beautifully, and I cannot imagine the excitement you are feeling. With all of the lovely details, I am obsessed with the gorgeous detail of your doors, and the hardware…exquisite. Wish I’d had your door for my hardware post last week!! Hope you are having a great week ~

You are so funny how you go from the the most gorgeous house ever built to the $3.99 Target soap! Tina, your living room floors are unbelievably gorgeous! Everything is really, but these stuck out. Also, the tile work — amazing. And the mill work – I could go on and on. I am so happy for you (and a wee bit jealous 🙂
Stacy

I should save reading your blog posts for last b/c they are always so incredible, but I don’t b/c I can’t wait to see what you have in store for us!
Yes, so sad about Borders….perhaps the little bookstores can hang in there. Read Cutting for Stone – great book. Now onto Ken Follett’s Fall of Giants – it’s pulling me in from the get go. Love those tunics – just adorable. And, those pancakes. I’d better not show those to my boys – they think I’m awesome just b/c I put chocolate chips in theirs!!!

xoxo Elizabeth

Hi, Tina,
So sad about Borders and all book stores. No Kindle for me; I want to hold it, touch it, refer back to it; add it to my library. I am afraid most people will not have libraries in their homes anymore.
I love the loggia and the Belgian block on the driveway. I am dying to know what countertop/s you are choosing for the kitchen.
Thanks for the other tips and for a wonderful post I look forward to every Thursday.

Your home is detailing out exactly like I knew it would, elegant and fabulous beyond words. I love the floor in the family room and the trim work is beautiful. This post just came in as I’m on my way out the door. I’ll be back to visit this post for drool time this afternoon. You must be so excited……….

Very bummed about Borders as well. It is the only nice bookstore we have here. Loved to go chill and look at all the magazines. Doesn’t quite feel the same in a Walgreens. As usual..your house is beyond fantastic!! love it!

Tina, your husbands and sons bathrooms are fabulous! We love the spindles and parquet floor. You chose a beautiful pattern. We are still drooling over your porch. Hope you have a beautiful day!
Angela and Renee

The bathrooms are so wonderful. And seriously, your mudroom is incredible….looks like it could be a living space! Love Duet Letterpress….they do my business cards!

Tina!!!!! Your woodwork is aamazing! I am just in awe of the cabinetry, flooring, arched door frames, mouldings! Just breathtaking!

I cannot wait to see how you furnish the porch! It is so inviting even without a single chair!

Have you ever posted a floorplan/blueprint? I would love to see the layout – I am very visual 🙂

xoxo

Hi Tina…Love the house update. Your hardware is fantastic! I too am greatly saddened by the demise of the bookstore. When we lost Joseph Beth in Charlotte, I felt like I lost a good friend. The manager of the local Barnes and Noble and I were talking and she predicted that we would not have bookstores as we know them in ten years. Wake up people! Put down your Kindles! Very sad indeed.
Amy

“What’s more relaxing than going into a bookstore?” I would say, sitting near the fireplace of your exquisitly paneled Home Library with Pinot Grigio in hand – ha! I didn’t see pics of your library, but I imagine you must have one…mi casa su casa? 🙂

If you’re a Prime member on Amazon you can buy six (24 oz, not 11oz) bottles of JR Watkins soap for $2.55 each. Good deal for each of those big bathrooms of yours 🙂

Tina, watching your home’s progress is right at the top of my favorite HGTV and DIY design shows! Intense! Exciting! Also, I visited Gretchen Scott, and yes I have my eye a two dresses, eyelet and boho style (could work well Texas style too with a pair of western boots)! Love her designs too! Also, I have to agree with you in regards to the sadness of losing bookstores and books! We may have a generation to doesn’t understand the intense beauty and gift of a book! And, again, you’re right that the narrowing of calming passtimes is somewhat upon us. Lastly, the pancake creations are cute…but there’s nothing like a stack of plain ole round pancakes with butter and syrup! YUM! (By the way, in regards to my post yesterday, and your commment…….you could be my “sisterfromanothermother”! LOL! :))

I love the spotlights on your home. Beautiful photos of your home. It is going to be exquisite. Going to try to find the hand soap-am into the liquid kind. Thanks for all the heads up on things.

Your home is coming along beautifully. The porch with the arches and brick took my breath away. LOVE the spindles, too. I can’t wait to see what light fixtures you choose, especially in the first floor hallway and the kitchen. Thanks for a great post.

Lori

Your house is ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE….how gorgeous, I am GREEN with envy!!! And happy for you that is coming together of course 🙂 How exciting!!

I remember how fabulous it was when the first Borders opened here in London, it was the first bookstore where you could sit, have coffee and read….I loved it. And get American magazines, I was thrilled!!! It closed here last year.

I have “Cutting for Stone” to read this summer, am waiting until I am sitting on that French Riviera beach!!

You left me such a lovely comment the other – I know your comments are always so nice but what you said stuck with me all day….thank you so much for that xx

Love the spindles, tile in all bathrooms, vanities look awesome, the porch is amazing, and the driveway looks great! Thanks for the updates 🙂

love your post, its really something when you’re building a home how you have to decide on every little detail, it seems overwhelming to me. btw i looked up gretchen scott nice tunics but no where to order or buy hmm wondering why?
looking forward to your next post

Oh holy night I just live for these house updates! Love love love your choices and how everything is coming along so nicely!! So funny, I too prefer your choice for door knobs, but you are oh so right…. pick your battles…. the knob is beautiful.
Thank goodness you are sharing this journey!

I’m so sorry you’re so sad about your bookstore closing Tina, ours is closing too. The husband tried to buy me a kindle and no thank you I like holding a real book, he likes kindle and that is what’s closing all the store, I hate it. I’m loving your home it really looks like it’s coming along nicely but fair warning…stop showing your limestone porch or I’m moving onto it….lol, it’s beautiful. Enjoy your day!

Hi Tina, I see that the painting has begun. Are you using Benjamin Moore paints? If so, may I ask what colors you will be using in the dining, living, foyer & kitchen & powder room? I am in the process of choosing colors. I think you have amazing taste! your thoughts would be so appreciated. Thank you!

I’m pretty sad about what’s happening to the bookstores, too. I’ve regularly spent several hours at a time in our local bookstores reading & dining in the cafe (that serves great food btw). Technology is good, but I just don’t think anything will ever replace being able to hold in your hands & enjoy a good book or magazine.
Your home is just too magnificent! I could seriously live on that porch (lol). How welcomimg it’s going to be approaching the home & seeing the grounds with the way you’ve laid out the driveway. The millwork, spindles, parquet flooring, doorknobs, etc…it’s all just right & simply wonderful!

Seriously, every detail of your house is so beautiful and tasteful and lovely. I’m so glad you blog so that we get to share in this with you! I love that stationary – I love all papery products, especially the fancy ones 🙂 That pancake site could score me a lot of points with my son when he’s old enough (I’m sure my husband would love some creative pancakes as well). Love Thursdays at The Enchanted Home!!

we lost our Borders too, but I have to remember that when they first came in they nearly drove our locally owned bookstore out of business..but the local one managed to adapt and change and hung on so now they are back to being the only game in town because Borders is out..I went to both places frequently as I saw a need for both and will surely miss Borders…how very sad..
but your house Tina, is looking fabulous…I had to laugh at the mock up spindles as they are so not what the real ones will look like but are a good way to see what they will when they are installed for real..the porch is fabulous..as are the parquet floors…
it’s all looking quite beautiful..
best,
maureen

Could I just live on your porch????:):) I am so in love with it! The house is just a dream. The driveway is fabulous, what will be the surface??? Loving seeing this come together. You are so right about picking your battles….XO, Pinky

I am thrilled to see your house moving along at such a good pace. You will be sooo happy to be in there, I know!

I got sidetracked looking at the Gretchen Scott site and almost forgot to come back! And I can’t wait to show my grandkids those pancake pictures! What a great post- xo Diana

Oh Tina your home is PERFECT… Parquet floor – those are my dream floors… And all the details are just coming together so beautiful – you have great taste my friend! So happy for you and inspired to one day also build the home of my dreams…

Hugs & kisses from Rio!

It has been such a treat to watch your home evolve, this is a drop dead gorgous home I have never seen one like it. Enjoy!

So many reactions to this long post:

The thought of bookstores closing makes me want to cry. For four years, Barnes and Noble was my escape at school. When things got crazy, I would race to B&N and curl up with a good book for hours. I have a love-hate relationship with new technology that makes things like bookstores obsolete.

Wow, what progress on the home, Tina! I have a feeling that porch will be one of your very favorite spots in the whole house. I also think the hubby did a good job picking the doorknobs, hehe!

Ugh, love Gretchen Scott everything! Her tunics are my fav–they can double as bathingsuit cover-ups and tunics with pants!

Finally, those pancakes are incredible!!

Wow. For starters that door knob looks like jewelry! I would wear that thing. Also, love the bow front vanity for you guest, it’s lovely. Lastly, that T Rex pancake is the bomb. I would so slather him up with butter and maple syrup on a Saturday morning – too cute. M.

I love everything you are doing with your house!! We are building right now but I am having a hard time picking my brick, what color is it and where did you get it? It looks almost aged/ant, it is light but has enough color in it to stand out! Please help, I need it! Email me at [email protected] thanks

The details in your home are just stunning! And no matter what finish is on your knob, it’s gorgeous.
Love the tunics – I’ve been wearing a lot of them this summer and love how chic and put-together they look but so cool and comfy too.
I had read the news about Borders on a blog and am very sad. There’s a location I visit regularly in Dubai here, where I also pick up art supplies so if they close here, I have no idea where I’ll go then. sigh.

OH, I didn’t finish your whole post yesterday… just salivated over the house stuff.. back today and it’s too funny.. I just finished Cutting for Stone! Don’t you feel like you could perform surgery after reading that book? It was awesome but I was glad when I finished because it was a bit heavy…
Can not wait to hear how you like The Book of Mormon!!
xo
jan

Still spectacular looking!!! There’s not a detail I don’t like.

Tina, you realize you have the type of house here that should have its own name, like Tara, and maybe its own logo, something relating to the name, and a hand painted sign. There’s an idea for your next post!

I’m with you about books, it’s not the same reading on an electronic device (except for blogs, of course!). Guess we’ll be considered old fashioned soon…but that’s okay by me. Just finished reading “The Help”, it was excellent, the movie is coming out in August.

Love those pancakes, the most sophisticated pancakes I can achieve are 3 blobs to make a very uneven Mickey Mouse head, but oh well, the kids were very forgiving when they were little and loved them anyhoo!

Have a great week-end, Tina!

Tina,

I too am sad that our Borders is closing and Barnes and Noble is next on the chopping block. My husband and I would spend hours there several times a month all year long. Borders is a special place to me in more ways that one.

My word, my lovely friend you have worked some miracles during this wonderful home project. I hope you look around and smile, breathe, smile smile, breathe some more.

So now for my comments on house updates:
Living rm Versailles parquet floors ~ Stunning
Trim work works it lovely magic in the details
Panels throughout the house are spectacular
Kitchen beams ~~~ only a true visitonary such as you could relly “see” how this was going to look…great change Tina!

Details in the kitchen cabinety are exceptional and the mudroom is special and much needed since you experience such serve weather at times w/snow.

Carpets ~ great choices of warm colors. Bathrooms: The array of different vanities, tiles, tile designs is really pleasing to the eye with a different look in each bathroom yet similar colors ~ perfect.

Covered Patio: I can “see” the great activities happening in this space already and a great place for your to write a book on party planning from the heart.

The last photo of the drive round the bend is a story onto itself called ” The adventures at The Enchanted Home with Tina” just speaks volumes to me.

Soap…great I’ll have to check them out starting my Christmas list already and this appears to be the perfect choice for the holidays.

Letterpress ~ love, love, love letterpress it leasve such a wonderful impression.

Tunics, sundresses, summer wear some of my favorites to sew, alter it’s look with beading or rhinestones, and restyle a item or two. They make wearing them feel so special and worthy of special events.

Pancakes ~ nothing like creativity for get children to eat (I do this with my newphew and niece). Personally, I love pancakes plain always have, just warm, rolled up, no butter, no syrup just the goodness of the pure pancake yummy…it just feels like love.

Gosh what a fantastic post I just love all you do it makes me smile.

Bette

Oh sweet Tina,

Your visit today is so special to me, for I too feel a kindred spirit in this ENCHANTED HOME….you are kind, energetic and have a vision for beauty. AND YOU KINDNESS REACHES ACROSS THE WAVES. THANK YOU and I am honored that you are MY FRIEND.

I LOVE THE DOOR KNOBS YOU CHOSE, by the way!!! I CANNOT WAIT FOR THE GRAND OPENING!

Peace and much love, Anita

Oh, to sit on your new porch with a glass of wine in summer will be absolutely heavenly for you! And what I wouldn’t do for a mudroom, especially when Izzy comes in from horse riding and working in the stables with muddy gumboots on and makes a huge mess……SP

Please post the paint color that you have inside the trimwork in the hallway..it is gorgeous ..I need to know ..thank you!_

As usual your house updates are always mind blowing and this sure is too. I just have such tile envy – your choices for all the bathrooms are just sublime and I can’t wait to see the finished rooms now that the vanities are in, which are equally gorgeous. Love your selections for carpet for the boys’ rooms and that has given me food for thought to consider using pattern rather than plain. It looks wonderful. The millwork in your house is beyond description. I can’t imagine the hours of work that have gone into that, your house is really a work of art. I hope you are going to conduct house tours for your blog readers when it’s done! I’d fly over from Australia just to take a peak! 🙂

Your house is coming along beautifully!

I love those new house announcements, and those pancakes look like a lot of fun! Thanks for sharing!

I do not know how you sleep at night knowing how fabulous you house is going to be…..just being able to pick out so many beautiful things is heart stopping!!! Love the updates!!!
