Things I am loving Thursday and house updates!

Good morning, hope everyone is having a good week, hard to believe we are practically in October! Don’t know about where you are, but around here, its been raining cats and dogs. Humidity off the charts, NOT a good hair day lately! My hats have been seeing lots of use. My week has been busy and overwhelming. Lots of decisions still being made, and now that we are at last starting to tackle the decorating end, I REALLY feel overwhelmed! There has been non stop work going on over at the house but I don’t feel the pictures of this weeks progress will fully reflect that so I am just enclosing less than the usual amount of pictures as well as a few things I am loving this week, next week promises to be a full mega packed post of things as many things are happening next week! We are still aiming to move in by late October, so we are forging ahead fast and furious! Here we go…….

HOUSE UPDATES. Though there has been a lot going on this week, the pictures might not fairly show the progress being made. Come next week however, there are going to be big changes on the horizon. For one the countertops start getting put in, the biggest though is that the limestone..yes that LONG awaited limestone for the front entrance that we have been waiting on for many months is coming!!! Due here on Tuesday and cannot wait! You can be sure I will be snapping away. So this round might appear a little light, I dont’ want to bore you with more repetitious pictures so just trying to capture whats new…..

Awaiting counterops coming in next week, and cannot wait to lift the covering on the floor!

Refrigerator/freezer handles…woo hoo!

This is the display cabinet that is between the kitchen and butlers
Breakfast room done!
TV unit above fireplace in family room done!
Vestibule leading from family room to dining room

Beautiful herringbone floors upstairs
Sons vanity done and countertop in place!

New finish for my bathroom cabinetry, think we are almost there, this is whiter, has less yellow
We are still tweaking it…..
Bathroom starting to shape up…..

The reeding detail under the chair rail

A little peek at the stair rail, the only part that’s not covered…..

The curved wall detailing is completed, waiting for paint (and not to worry that’s a temporary sconce)

TOPIARIES. Long been a fan of them, always have a few in the house and outside by my front door. There is no limit as to what you can do with a topiary….you are only limited by your imagination as you will see here with some most unusual ones. I love green on black, don’t you? This first picture is so pretty, of this trio of topiaries on a black metal tray. Here are a few that I found particularly inspiring….

A topiary gazebo? WOW!

The Beatles? Imagine!
The circus has come to town…….

A GREAT BAKING ITEM. A baker I am not, but you hardly have to be a genius to figure out how to make a banana bread or pumpkin bread, and one of these warm out of the oven is pretty hard to beat on a cool crisp fall day. The only thing that could make it any better is to have it look amazingly beautiful and thanks to this nifty and beautiful loaf pan I found from Crate and Barrel of all places, I will oohing and ahhing everyone! I have yet to use it but plan to next week as a trial run and then will make something for the Thanksgiving holidays. Isn’t it neat?

DARKER GROUT ON SUBWAYS. Now that I decided I am going with Calacutta Gold subways for the backsplash in kitchen and butlers pantry,  I have been toying with the idea of giving it that old world touch by going darker with the grout. True, light grout gives it a fresh, clean feel which compliments the white marble beautifully but the darker grout gives it a certain presence, makes it feel instantly older and allows it to stand out a little more. I am going to experiment, but wondering what your thoughts are on using a darker grout with a lighter stone or tile? Here are some examples to show you…..

A MUCH ANTICIPATED BOOK COMING OUT. I LOVE Phoebe Howard, her style is very much like my own and I have yet to see a room of hers that I haven’t just drooled over. So needless to say, I am SUPER excited about her new book coming out spring of 2012. I will be one of the first to line up to get this book….I just know its going to be chock full of amazing interiors and inspiration.  The cover is the ultimate tease to what I can only guess is one heck of a great design book! Are you a Phoebe fan?

CREATING LITTLE VIGNETTES. Oh how I miss doing this! I must be getting really desperate because my poor little overworked to the bone blue and whites are doing serious overtime! I am constantly changing out with seasonal flowers and greenery. I love them but  cannot wait to unpack all my things so I can start “playing”. In the meantime, I played around with the little I do have…..

AN AWESOME GIVEAWAY. Down to the last two days to be eligible for this amazing French table!! Here is the lowdown…..

Answers to your questions, a giveaway and results from which would you choose!

Good morning…….I am so excited, FINALLY went to mark the slabs yesterday for my countertops which start fabrication today and they start getting installed next Monday!! We are however, still very much still on the prowl for a big enough piece for my island, which is proving to be a daunting task though everyone is confident we will find it. Good things come to those who wait, right? First in case you missed it yesterday, here is the low down on the amazing giveaway….

Now onto my post…..

Remember the post on “which would you choose” showcasing 12 living rooms? Many of you thought it would be fun to know which were the top picks. I think from now on, I will post the results as it is interesting to see which was the most popular. So below are the top 5 “winners”! Though in my eyes, they were ALL winners…..

1st place with 27 votes

2nd place with 26 votes (razor thin margin)
3rd place with 20 votes
4th place  with 14 votes

5th place with 12 votes

Funny thing happened yesterday, my kitchen guy and I both noticed AFTER the fact of course, that the wrong kitchen knob was installed (the backplate/escutcheon was correct), not a huge deal as its a small knob but the one I ordered had a little more detail so they all came off today and we are now awaiting for the right ones to come in. To most, there would be no difference but to me, a stickler for all details, this would gnaw away at me like a chipmunk on an acorn so I know I did the right thing! Oh well, in the scheme of things……anywho got me thinking and…….

Last night at about 2 am when I couldn’t sleep I started thinking it was high time to do a post acknowledging many of the questions I have been asked over the last few months, some more than once. I do try to personally acknowledge all emails that come through but lets face it, its impossible to catch every one of them. So today while impossible to address every question, I will answer some and promise to follow up with subsequent posts on others, so keep em coming. I am happy to help and answer in any way that I can!
Here we go……

1. Are we building a new house or is this a house restoration? For those of you who asked, thank you, this is the highest compliment. When I told my architect this, he was thrilled as well. This is a brand new construction. (meant to look like its been there a long time when we are said and done)

2. Was there a house on this property? Yes, it was a charming older home. From the outside it was storybook, a beautiful semi small French home, not huge and unfortunately very chopped up. It had a very unusual “butterfly plan” and after spending 5 months at the drawing board trying to figure out a time and cost effective way to working around this, it was agreed with everyone involved, the house should come down and we should start from scratch. Not what I had in mind, I had not interest in building again and putting over three years of my life on hold, but fast forward to fall of 2011 and here we are. Glad the end is near!!

3.How tall are the ceilings? On the first floor they are 12 feet and on the second floor, they are 10 feet.

4. Who made our kitchen and all the woodworking? We did not use a company but  private woodworkers who are truly  master craftsmen. Don and Gary are responsible for all the beautiful woodworking and cabinetry you see. I could not be any happier with the result.

5.What paint colors have you used? For upstairs, the only floor we have painted, we toned down Linen White so its actually a mix (took a little of the yellow out) and used White dove on the trim. Still working on downstairs…..

6. Do you have any good resources that are reasonable for Carerra and Calcutta gold marble? (got this a lot too)  YES! I have been anxious to share these resources with you! I went through New Ravenna (www.newravenna.com) for most of our bathrooms for all the custom work,  but it didn’t make sense to use them for simple things like carerra subways or hexagons (for showers/walls in the boys room) ,chair rails and pencil moldings where New Ravenna charges a premium. If you want seriously gorgeous waterjet marble or mosaics, then it doesn’t get better than New Ravenna. But for simple marbles…there are many other great and affordable options!  I found three especially great resources who deliver a top product at unbelievable prices. I was thrilled with the customer service and deliver and quality and even happier with the prices! They cannot be beat, trust me I have looked EVERYWHERE!! Always have a sample shipped to you first so you can see what the lot looks like, lots vary considerably, but I must say Stone Centers Calacutta Gold was especially hard to find, then to find such high quality at a reasonable price was incredible!

For Calacutta Gold hex’s and subways I used Stone Center online:  (He had what I couldn’t find anywhere, which was Calacutta gold chair rails…when I finally found one source it was 39.99 a linear foot and the quality was horrible, the quality at Stone Center was AMAZING)-

 http://www.stonecenteronline.com/calacatta-gold-c-3.html?zenid=f2787629874cfd45c71edb1a3b0bc3d5   (STONE CENTER)

And for great quality Bianca Carerra (the whiter Carerra) here are two-

http://www.basketweavemosaics.com/bicawcaco.html   (BASKETWEAVE MOSAICS)

http://www.buildersdepotdirect.com/category/56219922421/1/BIANCO-CARRARA-MARBLE-MOSAICS-TILE.htm  (BUILDERS DEPOT DIRECT)

7. Do I ever sleep? YES! Well, not as much as I would like if truth be told, I am a light sleeper to begin with, and  a pretty high energy person and those two don’t mix so well. I don’t like taking medication, otherwise I could probably benefit from a sleep aid. Most nights I get to bed around 11:30 and am up between 5:30-6:30, coffee of course helps to sustain me throughout my day, I am really addicted to Peet’s coffee..have you tried it? If you love coffee, you MUST, its AMAZING!

8. This was a good one….Does anyone help or write for me on my blog? As in an assistant? Thats funny, but no and no. Its yours truly doing it all. It is a labor of love, the day I stop loving it is the day I will take a small break until I feel the love coming back. This is not an “operation or undercover blog headquarters” just little old me having fun with my little old blog. Nothing more and nothing less. Sorry I cant make it sound more glamorous:)

9. What are the color of our kitchen cabinets? (I got this a lot) It was a custom color with the base being Powder Sand by Benjamin Moore and then it was slightly toned down, then we played around with very subtle glazes. I wanted no red/orange in the glaze, so it has a bit more brown/gray, its very very subtle. The island is full on black. The butlers pantry is the darkest Java stain, looks black but its actually a stain and in the sunlight you can see the grain of the wood come through.

10. What color did we paint the bathrooms with the white marble? We went with White Dove for all the bathrooms besides mine and the powder rooms. (Which will get wallpaper) Its a nice clean white that is not too creamy. Since we used white and pale gray marble in these, we needed a neutral white on the cool side.

11. What are my favorite wallpaper companies? I like many, but Schumacher, Scalamandre and Zoffany are three that I seem to have a lot of success with. For chinoiserie, Paul Montgomery, Stark, De Gournay and Gracie all make incredible products.

12. Why haven’t I posted plans of the house online? Our contract with our architect does not allow it. But I will try to do a walk through when we move or maybe get really ambitious and make, as suggested a short video.

13. What is the name/manufacturer of the kitchen hardware you chose? RK International

14. How old am I? Lets go with “mid forties” or I think I like “over 30 and under 50 better”!

15. What finish did you use on the kitchen hardware and all the bath hardware? What brand is the bath hardware? I used all polished nickel in the baths and its all from Perrin and Rowe/Rohl and in the kitchen its oil rubbed bronze.

16. Were the beams in the kitchen, breakfast and living room antique/reclaimed or new made to look old? They are new beams which were successfully completed to look old/aged. Thanks again to Don and our master finisher, Rocco.

17. What color did I paint my closet? I painted it Benjamin Moores Silver Crest…. I love it, its the perfect really muted gray/blue/green.

18. What color is our brick? I get asked this a lot. The rep from the brick company, is away in Italy for a month (I know lucky him) so when he gets back, I will be asking and promise to post this information. We searched high and low, until we found it..and could not be happier with our choice.

OK, so that’s it for today, I have lots of other questions to answer but will post those next round!
Wishing you a wonderful day…..until next time!! Don’t forget to visit Safaviehs Home page to enter the contest for the amazing French table….click here. Enjoy your day!

Behind the blogger…meet Luciane from Home Bunch!

Good morning, hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. I announced  an incredible giveaway yesterday, the winner will be chosen Sat. morning, look at the end of this post for all details. Today I am so thrilled to feature a great and treasured blogging friend, say hello to….

Luciane from Home Bunch

I cannot speak highly enough of how incredibly kind, gracious and sweet Luciane is. It is no surprise that she runs a very popular “always something great to see” blog, Home Bunch. She features an incredible array of homes from the most dream worthy beach houses to luxurious celebrity homes to very unusual homes that are as eclectic as they come! Rest assured, it is always well worth the click to visit Home Bunch. When I found out she was from Brazil, I realized immediately that is where she got her warm and bubbly personality from ( having lived in Brazil during my young teens,  I think Brazilians are perhaps the warmest, friendliest and most fun loving culture and people). She is expecting her third child, I am so happy for her (and a wee bit jealous) but she doesn’t skip a beat in delivering one incredible post after another! Please stop by and say hello to Luciane!

Click on the header to visit Home Bunch and thank you Luciane !
So what inspired you to start blogging in the first place? My husband kept telling me I should do it because interior design and architecture are my passion . He always said I could do it, even when I didn’t believe I could. He knew I had so much to talk about with regard to design and he said I should share my ideas and the houses I find online on a blog. The truth is, I think he got tired of me always calling him to see the places I loved! Little did he know that he would be hearing about design even more now!

How did you come up with your blog name? This is an interesting question. The day I sat in front of my computer, decided I was going to start a blog, I went to see some domain names for sale and nothing really sounded appealing to me. I knew I wanted a fun and different name, not too formal. As I was thinking I asked myself about what I want to see on my blog and I thought: “I want to see a bunch of homes! Oh, HomeBunch!”. And that was it. It’s easy to remember and I think it’s fun to say it.

Do you have a favorite all time movie?
I love watching movies and I’ve seen so many of them. I’m in a comedy mood lately because I cry way too easily if I watch a sad movie and nobody wants to watch movies with a crying person beside you. Isn’t it so awkward? Then the person looks at you and you feel so stupid for crying! Having said that, my favorite movie of all time is one that I cried my lungs out! The Notebook. The story is profoundly honest and powerful. Now, please, pass the tissue!

You get to spend a month in the European countryside?.is it Italy or France? I love the French countryside, but Italy is my dream! I love the country, the culture, the food and soccer!

Favorite meal? I’ve been to so many amazing restaurants and I can appreciate a good meal, but when it comes to my favorite I must say it has to come from home. Mine goes back growing up and eating my grandma’s gnocchi. That’s something I will never forget.

Tell us as little or as much as you want to about your family. I was born and raised in Brazil and moved by myself to Canada more than ten years ago. I couldn’t speak any English and after being here for a year I met my husband. It was so interesting, but the moment I saw him I said (to myself, of course) I’d marry him. I just felt it in my heart. We got married 8 months after that first date. We’re have a great marriage and we’re expecting our third child for the end of November. I’m not saying I’m living a fairy tale, I don’t even look like a princess, for that matter! But we’re very blessed and we keep strong. Life is not easy as everyone knows, but everything we have to face, we face it together, as a family and I know this is what makes us who we are.

If you could have any career what would it be? I used to be a kindergarten teacher in Brazil and I always loved being around kids. The way they see life is inspiring and I’ve learned so much with them. But interior design has grown so much in my heart that I know I’m on the right path for this stage of my life. If I can help people feel better about where they live and create their memories, then I know I’m doing something right with this profession. So, I believe I’m already doing what I want to do and that’s very rewarding.

Favorite design style? I like traditional with a fun twist. Nothing predicable, boring. A room has to have style, but we should never forget comfort.

If you could live in only one color, what would it be? One color? I think it has to be blue. Blue is my favorite color, although I think I’d get tired of everything blue at some point! But blue always makes me feel at ease and calm. So, even if I’m bored with everything being blue, at least I know I’d be calm.

Favorite season and why? Summer! I love where I live during summers. This is a small town on the Atlantic and it feels like a resort when summer comes. You can go to many sandy beaches and eat as much lobster and fresh seafood as you want. The temperature is always perfect also. Not too hot and that breeze from the ocean always cools you down.

Design icon? There’s so many people I admire and I learn with in this area, but I don’t have only one person to name it as “icon”. I see so many new talented people never being recognized and I see many others that just has a name because the media likes them and creates this image around them. My favorites designers are people I visit very often, my blog friends and I always tell them how much I think they’re talented and how much they teach me. They’re my real icons.

One place you haven’t been that you want to visit? Oh, it goes back to Italy! But also Switzerland, Greece, Japan, Spain, France and England. I love traveling.

What’s your number one pet peeve?People that do not appreciate or respect the elderly. That really makes me sick.

What are the two best things about blogging? The readers that become your friends. I’ve met so many great people through blogging and that includes you, Tina!. Having a blog is a lot of work if you take it seriously but these people really give me strength and they make me always make me give 100%.

You get to have a private dinner with any two people in the world, they can be from fashion, design world, literary world, Hollywood, politics, etc..your choice. Who are the lucky two? I think I could have a very interesting conversation with Oprah and Paulo Coelho (the author of “The Alchemist” and many other books).

Do you have a favorite saying or quote? “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where you treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Matthew 6:19-21.

Most overrated trend right now?  It’s not much about what is overrated right now but how we use the “trendy” things we see. If you don’t design a room based on trend it will not look outdated when the trends are gone. That’s why I love “timeless” elements, you never get tired of classic. And talking about tired, I’m already tired of ikat fabrics or maybe I was never a big fan of it in the first place.

Reading anything interesting that you want to share? Oh, gosh! Interesting? It would be if you’re pregnant like me! The last time I was pregnant I read so many pregnancy books and I couldn’t see books or magazines that talked about babies for years. This was 5 years ago and I’m so enjoying  being pregnant again that all I can read right now is about babies and breast-feeding. So, I’m not sure if that’s interesting for the most people reading this interview, but I’m actually enjoying reading “What to expect when you’re expecting” for the 3rd time in my lifetime! Ha!

You are 18 again. What do you do? I was so confident when I was 18 and I was already pretty mature for my age. I actually feel so proud how I lived my teen years. I was so full of life, dreams and energy. If anything, I should never forget how much I believed in myself back then and I should never stop believing that I can still achieve all the dreams I still have. It’s incredible, but sometimes I think we leave all that energy, the many dreams behind and we start forgetting  how capable we are. Dreams should not fade as we get older.

What are your plans for the fall? This Fall is going to be interesting. It’s weird to have both my kids at school. The house feels empty during the mornings and way too quiet! I have to get ready for my baby’s arrival in November and that means, I have to prepare many posts and  finish some projects. These months ahead will be very busy around our house, but I’m looking forward them.

In ten years I will be??.Healthy with my family. That’s all I really wish.

If you could live anywhere on earth and money was no object, where would you go? A shingled summer house in the Hamptons would be fun, wouldn’t it? Would you come over?

Best tip or two for any new bloggers reading this?.Don’t be pushy. I mean, don’t force your blog to grow overnight. If this is a business for you and not only a hobby, make sure you have enough time to devote to it. You’ll have to work hard to have a big blog. But what really matters in this business is not how many people are coming to see and read what you posted, but how many friends you’re making. That’s what really matters to me. It’s wonderful to know that people choose to come to see you every day. It’s so amazing to know that people take a minute of their day to read your words.
Don’t be afraid or shy to say what’s in your heart. Let people know your true colors. There’s no reason to pretend. People should like you for who you are and for what you think.

Blogging to me is Is where I’m 100% myself and where I share my story and many opinions.

Give me four words that describe your personality. Discreet, a believer, thoughtful and the most important of all, a mother. By the way, this was the hardest question to answer. Why is it so hard to give ourselves some credit sometimes, huh?

And now a little recap on all the things that Luciane loves…..

How great is Luciane? Pretty too! (That’s her in the middle)! So true about not letting dreams die, I love what she said about her family and her advice to new bloggers was fabulous and spot on! Take it from a pro like Luciane, she knows what she is talking about. What she said about design icons…has made me a fan for life! I love how grounded she is, and  she really seems to have her heart in the right place. And Luciane, you better believe I will be visiting you in your shingled Hamptons home! Do you promise to make your grandmothers gnocci? I will dessert and The Notebook! Please stop by and introduce yourself to Luciane, you too will want to make her blog one of your daily visits. And last…….
Some of you were intrigued yesterday,  when I mentioned my candy sushi that I make for my sons schools fall fair. Well, it was a big success despite gloomy weather, we sold out and I thought I would share with you what it looks like!
It starts with plenty of candy…..

Then a bunch of helping hands and a few hours later…we are presented with amazing candy sushi made from fruit roll ups, all kinds of gummy candies and Swedish fish and rice krispy treats. We drizzle them with “soy sauce” aka chocolate sauce and then we package them into real sushi containers and the end result is just adorable….

And a huge hit with the kids (and many adults too)
Yes, this was a bit of a hodge podge, a little of this and a little of that! Wishing you a wonderful and relaxing Sunday!
