A few current obsessions…..

Good morning! I am posting this the day the superstorm Sandy is due to hit our area.  We had wicked winds last night howling for hours and rain that came down intermittently. The worst is yet to come, I have a feeling power/cable will be down by the end of the day…so if I am not around the next day or two, you will know why.  Cannot imagine not being able to come onto my computer and will so miss being connected to blogland  so hoping it doesn’t happen!  Thank you to all who have emailed me, you are just too sweet and thoughtful. We have all we need, are well prepared and hopefully this will pass soon. In the meantime here is some seriously gorgeous eye candy for your viewing pleasure. To all my friends and readers who are in Sandy’s path, stay safe and may this soon pass with minimal damage and harm!

UPDATE- Thanks to all of your for your concern and kind emails. We are fine, thank God. But Hurricane Sandy, as I am sure you have seen has done quite a number in the tri state area and has devastated some areas beyond description. What we have suffered pales in comparison to many…..just tons of downed trees, loss of power/internet, but our home is safe and sound and so are we and that is what counts! I am writing you from a hotel computer and have limited access but wanted to pop in to update you and say hello and mostly to say thanks for your kindness. Praying for everyone that did not fare as well and hoping for a speedy recovery for all those who lost so much.

This particular post is a bit of anomaly just a fun what the heck kind of post. The things I am posting about today are simple things that I just ADORE……actually let’s scratch that and  make that obsessed with. Seriously gorgeous. They don’t necessarily fit into a particular post so I made one up to fit them! A few things I am madly in love with that I just had to share….

Wedding and specialty cakes. I just know in my former life (or my next one) I was a famous wedding cake designer to the stars. I am just too taken with them and never ever get tired of looking at them. And lets not even ignore the fact that I love to eat cake too:)  Anyone out there like that too? I fell in love with well, every single cake that Bobette and Belle makes and lets just say its a darn good thing I dont’ live near them or I would be a major calker (translation- cake stalker) Anyone out there in Toronto? If so you are in luck!

Feast your eyes and appetite on these……Click here to visit their website.

Pretty crazy beautiful, don’t you think? Have a fave? I don’t know that second one, the carousel, the teapot, the wedding cake with the cherry blossoms pretty much blow my socks off. But then again they all do….am in total awe!
Another serious obsession is this Italian line of appliance, Reestart, they kind of leave some of the other competitors in the dust. I mean these are “serious business, no holds barred, no limits, just go for gold” kind of appliances. Glad I found out about them after I ordered all my appliances, and know my husband is too:) They come in six exquisite colors, the brass detailing alone makes me drool. Just incredible, take a look. Have you ever!!!!!!!

Admittedly I am not a huge fan of the Hiltons (Paris more than had her 15 min. of fame) however hats off to Kathy, the matriarch of the family on her new clothing line. It has a very Marchesa-ish feel but is priced really really well. Some of her prettier pieces…..what do you think?

Well, pretty wouldn’t you say? Have a fave, I am loving the long black lace number, and the soft white gowns they are so ethereal looking. And that last dress is so pretty too. Nice job Kathy! Here’s her website, click here.
Southern Accents  Oh how I miss this magazine, there are no words!! Nothing comes close so I get very excited when I visit my local bookstore and see the Christmas edition! On one hand there are a a lot of recycled photos which generally is somewhat of a no no for magazines however SA redeems itself simply because they are all so breathtakingly beautiful! I highly recommend you get your hands on one, I go over it time and time again lapping up all the scrumptious decorating ideas for the holidays!! Heres a sneak peek….

OK well I can assure you I could easily go on and on, but I will stop here. Just a short and sweet post about some seriously beautiful things. Do I have your attention? What knocks your socks off? Wishing everyone a wonderful day and thanks for stopping in! Again for those of you  in Sandy’s path, heed the cautions……its a serious storm, stay safe and talk to you soon!

The dough bowls have come to town!

Happy Thursday evening to you. To all you dough bowl lovers, this is for you. I know several of you have emailed me about the small to mid size dough bowl which doesn’t always come around. I was going to post this tomorrow but couldn’t wait! So happy to announce I just got in a FABULOUS lot of dough bowls…might I even say my prettiest batch yet. I want to keep each and every one of them. I have a total of 10 pieces, assorted sizes, long and round.

The rounds are a great size and VERY hard to come by. I got three really big ones (all over 42″) one monster at 55″ (looks like a canoe) and 6 of the very hard to find mid to small sized. They are a rich beautiful brown, just got cleaned and  freshly waxed and these are seriously beautiful. Old and found in Belgium and Hungary. So first lets take a look at these beauties, email me if you are interested as always. This is what I got from this special lot, so likely they won’t go onto the online store as its a limited lot. If you have been waiting for one, trust me they do not get any prettier than this!

UPDATE- All dough bowls are sold. I will be getting in one more box on Monday which I think are the larger ones but feel free to email me on Mon. or Tuesday as I am hoping (fingers crossed) that there are a few more of the small/med. sized. Thanks for your interest, the response has been overwhelming…how I wish I had more!

They measure handle to handle from 15″ to 22″ long (approx. 12-16″ wide)

I devote my post today therefore on how to decorate with a dough bowl and seeing them in all their many ways……..

My own is currently filled with a big batch of pears

Stunning with holiday greenery and pinecones!! The old Painted Cottage

Love the idea of a dough bowl placed on a coffee table filled with candles…gorgeous!

Love the idea of filling one with seashells and placed on a coffee table….gorgeous! Allison Jaffe

Love the idea of adding pinecones and candles….stunning!

Beautiful way to display a bunch of dried hydrangea or any other flowers, Pink Postcard

Love the way this is done in all its Halloween finery, SandandSisal

Moss filled dough bowl
Gorgeous arrangement of moss orbs in a dough as a centerpiece is spectacular!

Filled with crusty fresh bread and a sprig or rosemary….oh yes! PB
Love the idea of one on a center table with greens, so pretty! The Old Painted Cottage

A no brainer to use on a mantle….for the holidays or any other time. PB
I put flowers in mine and have to say I love the look!
So…what do you think? Like dough bowls? Have one? How do you like to use yours? I love them and have truly gained an appreciation for them as decorative objects, its so neat to have a piece of history in your home……just thinking of how it might have been used, where, by whom, 50, 100 years ago! Would love to know what you think of dough bowls. Thanks as always for stopping in, wishing you a fabulous evening and weekend!
For everyone in Hurricane Sandy’s path, hope you stay safe and out of harms way. It is a brutal storm and is predicted to bring tremendous rain and very strong winds. If we lose power I may not be on the computer for a few days (CANNOT imagine)!!! Lets hope that’s not the case! In any case, wishing you well and happy weekend!

Midweek musings…..

Good morning to you! Ever feel like there simply are not enough hours in your day? Well, that’s how I have felt all week and I suspect its only going to get worse as we near the holiday craziness. Thank God for coffee!  This is another all over the map post but its a fun excuse for me to talk about this and that.  On the home front, I am awaiting pillows and a dust ruffle to be done for the guest room which I cannot wait for, its coming out so  pretty! Will share as soon as its all together! I have included a few pics taken with my camera this time of the loggia all done. (taken on a dreary morning…)

Just had the floor cleaned and grouted……cannot wait to furnish this space and light that fire!

I just have to say again how honored I am to have been chosen by Homegoods as their blog of choice for the classic look!! It was so exciting to partner with them for the wonderful giveaway from last week. More to come!! Seeing my name on their website gives me such a thrill and truly is a wonderful validation of what I am doing….thank you Homegoods. You rock!
Click here to take their Stylescope quiz and see what style you are!

Saw two movies this past weekend, both which I really really enjoyed. The first one, The Intouchables I was supposed to see two weekends ago but plans changed and we didn’t go, I was bummed. I was happy we got to see it and it did not disappoint. A wonderful typically European film that touches the heart and moves the soul. I so enjoyed it as I do many foreign films.
The second one, Arbitrage with Richard Gere and Susan Sarandon centered around a filthy rich but very corrupt wall street tycoon and the story rings true about what has gone on for so long, its well done, riveting and I also enjoyed it for different reasons.

There are two movies coming that I cannot wait to see! Besides Le Mis of course:) I have included the trailers because I am not sure they will be considered “mainstream movies’ that you will see in every theater, but the previews have me waiting in bated breath to see them! Here they are….

WAR OF THE BUTTONS…..

RUST AND BONE…..

Seen anything good on your end lately?

I have never talked about of all things,  a brush before,  but seriously this brush saved my hair:) I have the most sensitive scalp on the planet, ever since I was a little I cried and cried whenever my hair was brushed. To this day when I am getting my hair done I normally wash my hair at home before going to the salon just to avoid the dreadful shampoo/scrub  that so many crave. Well……..this little brush is a miracle, I am not kidding! I venture to say I even look forward to brushing my hair, crazy? No, its incredible and for anyone who has a sensitive scalp like me or possibly girls with one….cannot recommend this enough. I call this the miracle brush but its real name is the wet brush…..the link is included under the picture. Yes, its that good!

I love to cook during the cozy season…..fall and winter. When its cold outside, nothing beats a warm something cooking away on the stove inside. I have posted about this soup before but its worth repeating, this is a very hearty soup for all you soup lovers. If could stand on its own as a meal, served with crusty french bread, yum! This is a staple in our home and it never disappoints on a cold wintry day.

Pasta e Fagiole Soup

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons (2 turns around the pan) extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1/8 pound (about 4 slices) pancetta, chopped (I do not chop it, it naturally falls apart while cooking)
  • 1 (4 to 6-inch) sprig thyme with several sprigs on it, left intact (use sparingly)
  • 1 large fresh bay leaf or 2 dried bay leaves (I use 3 fresh)
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 small carrot, finely chopped
  • 1 rib celery, finely chopped
  • 4 large cloves garlic, chopped
  • Coarse salt and pepper
  • 2 (15 ounce) cans cannellini beans
  • 1 cup canned tomato sauce or canned crushed tomatoes or fresh tomato sauce
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 quart chicken stock
  • 1 1/2 cups ditalini
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • Grated Parmigiano or Romano, for the table

Directions

Heat a deep pot over medium high heat and add oil and pancetta. Brown the pancetta bits lightly, and add herb stems, bay leaf, chopped vegetables, and garlic. Season vegetables with salt and pepper. Add beans, tomato sauce, water, and stock to pot and raise heat to high. Bring soup to a rapid boil and then simmer. Rosemary and thyme leaves will separate from stems as soup cooks. Remove herb stems and bay leaf from soup and place pot on table on a trivet. At this point, once you have removed your pot from heat, set aside and then put in your pasta. The heat will naturally cook the pasta but just perfectly, not too hot..and will result in a soup with al dente pasta as it should be. Is anything worse than a great soup with mushy pasta? Let soup rest and begin to cool for a few minutes. Ladle soup into bowls and top with lots of grated cheese. Serve with bread and enjoy……this is a real treat!

Its fun sharing the results of which Would you choose and this weeks was particularly fun, so want to know who took top prize? Well there were several who vied for top spot, and a few ties. I am happy to say everyone got at least one vote, I was feeling sorry for poor Steven Spielberg but finally he got two votes, so he can sleep tonight:) Here’s the top four………

Princess Diana with 23 votes

Thomas Jefferson (oh yea)  with 17 votes

Leonardo Da Vinci and Meryl with 15 votes

Did you know Isaac Mizrahi came out with a shoe line? I fell in love with these darling pumps, am a sucker for anything with bows. Love the combinations…ordered them in two combinations and will likely keep just one unless I happen to fall in love with both. Aren’t  these so much fun?

Shop  news……a few of the planters/statuary items are being phased out and some beautiful new pieces added. Two of the new additions are pieces I already own and love!  All new ones will be added as of tomorrow. A perfect fall day with Jennifer of Belclaire House!

Good Tuesday morning to you! Here today for another installment of “ A perfect fall day” with one of my favorite bloggers, one who infuses a fun playful sense of humor with a healthy dose of self deprecation that is so endearing, and her fair share of fabulous taste! She keeps me going back for more. Besides how can I not feel a bond with her since we both share an insane love for all things blue and white:)
Stylish Jennifer just moved into her dream home (big congrats on that) and is settling in as we speak…my heart goes out to her, I know full well how utterly exhausting it is to move but Jennifer I assure you it is  worth every sore muscle, every aching muscle, every hour of stress and super sore feet every package of cookies and bags of chips eaten out of stress! I was so happy to get her take on a perfect fall day, one that she is probably wishing she could take right about now:) This day spoke to me on many counts…..we could be great fall friends! If you are not a visitor already of Belclaire House, please stop over to visit, I assure you that you will most definitely make it a regular habit. Enough of me, lets join Jennifer on her perfect fall day…….

One word that comes to mind when I think of fall??Football! (I’m a huge Missouri Tigers fan)

One of the most wonderful things about fall is…….the crisp air, something about it energizes me
(okay fine, the fall TV lineup is pretty wonderful, too)

My favorite fall color is???
hmmmm,  even though fall is my favorite season, I’m not a huge fan of traditional fall colors in my home (like reds, oranges, burgundies and browns, although I love them on the trees outside).  I guess it’s more about texture and layers for me in the fall – more blankets and pillows and heavier fabrics as I prepare for winter (but still in my blue and white color scheme).  This fall I predict I use a lot of navy, dark green and blush colors.

Perfect spot for a book and a pumpkin spice latte
via the now book
On a perfect fall day, I would wake up at ???10 a.m.  (okay that’s never going to happen) … 9ish?

To the sound of????bacon sizzling and my husband, Kip, telling our two-year-old, Edward, to please hush because “it’s very important not to wake up Mommy because she works so hard all week to entertain you and prepare three perfect meals each day all while looking beautiful and skinny.”

Donna Reed

The view from my window looks something like this???We usually cannot keep up with the pace of the falling leaves much to my son Edward’s delight.

The ideal fall weather could be described this way………Sunny and not too cold.  Light sweater weather, if you will.

My ideal morning activity would be???I’d always rather be sleeping, but if that’s not an option than taking a walk around the neighborhood.

This is a fall outfit you might see me in???
via Snubnose
At least that’s what I look like in my head when I have on leggings and a sweater with my hair in a ponytail.  I’m sure I’ve never looked that chic.

A favorite product (beauty or otherwise) I like to use as the weather gets nippier????My slow cooker! At least twice a week!

For a fall breakfast I would indulge in???Extra coffee.  I never eat breakfast.  I know, it’s bad

My favorite daytime activity in the fall is????playing outside with my 2 year-old, going to a pumpkin patch or baking some yummy pumpkin treat

Here’s whats on my plate for lunch…….Probably Crock-pot leftovers from the night before or my Grandma’s Casserole, which is basically goulash.  I love to make a big casserole for lunch and then eat it for the next three days

Around 3pm you might find me???????Getting out of the house for a walk because Edward and the dog are driving me crazy.  They love it and I find it soothing.  It’s sort of the last thing I do before I’m ready to pass the baton to my husband when he gets home.  Here’s a photo from my favorite stretch of my walk

An afternoon “pick me up” snack might just be……..Cracker Barrel White Cheddar Cheese and Triscuits, or, let’s be honest, another cup of coffee.

For dinner you might find this cooking on the stove…………...Spaghetti, my ultimate comfort food.

The perfect way to end a perfect fall day would be??????A glass of red wine, my new favorite is Patz & Hall 2010 Jenkins Ranch, and a good TV show to watch while I snuggle on the couch with my husband. We love a good TV show, quality programming like The Bachelor.

Awesome Jennifer! Anyone who considers red wine, spaghetti and  the guilty pleasure of reality TV part of their perfect day is an instant friend of mine:)  Love it, thanks for injecting your fun spirit and light hearted humor….makes you  so real and like so much fun, my kind of girl!  And how cute is little Edward, cutest pumpkin in the patch! Thanks for letting us all tag along on your perfect fall day and I am going to have to try Patz and Hall in your honor of course! Be sure to pop over to Belclaire House where beautiful things are always happening, click here. Thank you all for stopping in and wishing you a perfect fall day too!

Which would you choose?

Good Monday morning to you  and how was your weekend? Hope wonderful. I must say with the glorious changing of the leaves around here I am sure to grab my camera whenever I am headed out,, as at every turn there is something I want to capture on film. The foliage is about a week  from peaking and is looking so spectacular. That coupled with the cooler less humid weather is really making for some delightful days. Perfect walking days. How about you? Are you enjoying the foliage?
Today my Which would you choose is slightly different, its more of a Who would you choose? Imagine this…….you are going to have lunch with a famous somebody. Two hours, your choice of restaurant and you get to chew their ear off the entire time, nothing is off limits…you can ask them anything, talk about anything, you are in charge!! Two full hours spent with someone who piques your interest. Fun? I think so.
So, I have gathered an interesting assortment of personalities representing culture, politics, Hollywood, religion, the literary world,  a little bit of everything. I kept both of our current presidents out of the mix and have included several who are now deceased but their legacy and our fascination lives on thus why they are included here……I am really looking forward to seeing who is going to be the busiest lunch companion! Try to narrow it down to to just one……here we go!
CHOICE 1

Audrey Hepburn

CHOICE 2

CHOICE 3

CHOICE 4

CHOICE 14

OK…for me, seriously I could close my eyes and point to any one of these fascinating personalities and be over the moon to be lunching with them! Oh we would have so much to say…or at least I know I would have a lot to say and ask. Each and everyone of these people totally fascinates me for one reason or another……and what about you? Who could you see sitting down with at your favorite watering hole and kicking back with? And why? What do you want to ask them?
I am so curious to know who gets to be top dog in this grouping. For those of you thinking humm….wish she would have thrown a little more glamour or fun into the mix, fear not…..a glamorous/Hollywood version soon to come:)
Thanks for stopping in and hope you have a wonderful Monday and start to the week!
