My weekend as seen through my iphone…..

REMINDER- Last day to enter the giveaway from The Enchanted Home over at Art by Karena. Click here to enter!

This is a short fun post. Hope you are having a wonderful and enjoyable weekend. Ours is going well…..my son ended up not going to his tournament  which secretly was kind of amazing to me so it allowed me a little extra free downtime, always a huge treat! We enjoyed having friends over, a beautiful dinner out, a trip to a favorite garden center,  a visit to a local farmstand that just opened and today we are going to a few more garden centers and then a graduation party later in the day.

Since my poor camera (heavily abused) is now officially “in retirement”  I have to rely on my iphone. Just got the new iPhone 5 a few days ago and will concede that the camera is much better than the 4. I did not like the quality of the pictures from my old phone so this one is a step up. Anywho….as I love to take pictures of just about anything and can rival any Japanese tourist I took various pictures that kind of tell a story of my happenings in the last few days. Thought it would make a fun and “quickie” post (quick by my standards). Ready? Here we go…..

A wonderful event at Safavieh…a table too pretty to not take a picture of, love the crudite “trunk”…

My local farm stand finally opened….what a treat!
Fresh bread getting sliced up for crostinis I am making for appetizers……….
Basil, parsley and fresh tomatoes….doesn’t get better!

 Fresh strawberries..yum!

 Baby carrots….

Cut up bellpepper in half to serve as “bowls” for my dip

Add a little lighting for some ambiance…..

Light the candles outside on the loggia……
Loving my pillows!! A post on this to come in the next week or two…..

Adding my finishing touches, love the look of baby carrots and a yummy healthy spinach dip made with Greek yogurt…..

Aren’t these glasses beautiful? Bought them at an antique shop in CT. a while back……

I bought a large lot of them….it was like a crystal glass jackpot, love them!

And of course every get together in my home must include some kind of crostini (we were having friends over)….could easily make a meal of these plus they are so pretty!

And I got the best fresh figs with the fresh strawberries…they were soooo good.

Bought five of these very large white “Annabelle”  hydrangea flower bushes….going to have them planted today

Spent a little time by the pool……

This was the original pool house which we have done nothing to other than clean it up, it still has a lot of charm but eventually hope to give it a “facelift”

This extra large lattice planter, (think playhouse size) over 4′ x 4′ x 4′ is getting planted on Sunday

So excited! These gardenia topiaries that were dying I was able to bring back to life and they just sprouted their very first blooms in months!! This was a thrill:)

And hydrangeas are bloomimg in my yard, not to say this is my favorite color but they are pretty

 Visited a local nursery………..

This darling scultpure is of a girl and boy swinging to be hung from a tree….so cute!

Aren’t these pretty? The beautiful flowers our friends brought us over when they came over last night

Raised my window treatment in my bathroom to make it a little fuller and I like it!

Finally finished the floor of the small powder room off the library….now waiting for the wallpaper…..

This paper I have had in that little bathroom for nearly a year! I am finally taking the plunge…still love it as much as the day I found it!
So that’s a wrap of my weekend as seen through my trusty iPhone. Today we have a graduation party and hoping it doesn’t rain! Hope you are enjoying a wonderful and relaxing weekend…hard to believe next week is July 4th! Summer is flying…….

End of the week musings….

Boy this week flew! Hard to believe its the weekend, we have a busy one ahead, having friends over for drinks tonight, a dinner tomorrow night and a graduation party on Sunday and in between a two day lacrosse tournament and a heck of a lot of driving back and forth. Better get my coffee maker cranked up and ready to do battle.  No rest for the weary….our summer has been full of parties, more than usual,  we had 5 within 4 weeks…kind of glad that “string of events” is over for now, I am looking forward to a slower pace (call me an old lady but I love a chunk of time with nothing on the agenda).  We are planning on going away for a few days for a  little rest and relaxation and I am looking forward.

Part of the fun of summer to me, is not having to adhere to any kind of schedule and just “winging it”. I see lobster rolls, coastal shorelines and lazy afternoons in my future:)
When we near July 4th, that is when I realize just how fast summer is flying! I saw my first “back to school” item in a pharmacy the other day and nearly fainted. No no and no. We need to stop and savor summer for a bit before we can digest anything having to do with fall and back to school!

Finally so happy you enjoyed my recap on The charm of Charlottesville, oh yes…I will be back and will be including several other southern cities in the next tour!  Click here if you missed it.

Ironically this was originally going to be one of my shorter random musings post…but as I always do I start it in the beginning of the week then add on as I am inspired to do so….and it ended up being a long one afterall (surprise surprise). So take a seat and an extra five or ten minutes……..let’s get started!

My house projects. Yea, yea, yea…I know I say it all the time how I am getting back, really I am this time! Two rooms, actually three I really really want to complete are my dining room, living room and bedroom. Actually make it four, we finally finished the tiny powder rooms floor off of the library and I am finalizing the wallpaper for that room to be done once and for all with it! My bedroom is held up because of wall to wall carpet, I will not budge and nothing is happening until the carpet is there. Period. The dining room..finally our chairs are almost here, another two weeks! Once they come then I think I will feel motivated to work on window treatments and go back to the chinoiserie drawing board and the room will be complete. Seems doable. Living room…..we are all over the place, so I think I will stop now with the bedroom and dining room. Here are some of the latest samples for my bedroom (I have not swayed) and living room pillow ideas…….

Funny my master bedroom ideas have not changed one iota since we moved here over a year ago! Here is a mood board I had created, still loving it…..

And these handpainted tole lamps just have to be incorporated somehow…….

Some of the pretty fabrics up for consideration…….

I cannot wait to use my gorgeous monogrammed bedding…and look at these scrumptious trims!

And for small powder room,  still love this wallpaper, so that is what I have decided on!

And up to my ears in trims for pillows for living room

A gorgeous tablescape. By now you know this totally “floats my boat”. Almost makes me want to have another party. Almost 🙂 But boy is this pretty……

Carolyne Roehm working her magic…again!

White jeans. Thought this post on white jeans and the psychology behind it was right on the mark and so interesting, I have always thought white pants or white clothing for that matter to be so chic…

Click here to read the article on Tory Burch’s blog……

Pretty crudite idea. Went to an event at the Safavieh store last night and loved this crudite idea. It was in a wicker “trunk”….so cute and fun! Reminds me to stay creative when thinking of ways to display even something as mundane as a crudite platter!

Best flank steak. You know I like to share recipes when I love something. Have been making this flank recipe forever but its soooo good, easy and worth sharing. If you like to BBQ and have flank steak lovers in your household. This is a must try. The key is marinating for at least 8 hours preferably overnight and the ginger is a big part of the tenderizing process.

Here it is “doing its thing”…..

Ingredients-

1 flank steak
1 ziplock bag
about 1/2 cup soy sauce
1 bunch scallions
about 4 Tbsp sesame seeds (toasted)
1 heaping Tbsp sugar
about 1/4 cup oil
about 1 Tbsp grated fresh ginger (if you don’t have ginger spice is OK but fresh is preferred)

Simply place all ingredients in bag, shake well. Then season your steak with sea salt and pepper generously. Put in bag, seal well and “massage’ it so the marinade has covered the entire steak. Lay flat in your fridge, and turn over at some point mid way. That’s it! When you are ready to grill, remove and throw on hot grill. It is DELISH! The ginger helps to soften/marinate the meat and its absolutely wonderful!

Flower power. Went to my local Italian specialty shop and they had the most spectacular hydrangeas in bloom! Looks like a late summer show of flowers to me…..(snapped these with my iPhone)

And my own white flowers are really lasting and standing the test of time….love white on green!

A favorite jewelry line. Are you familiar with Jose and Maria Barerra? Their line is sold at Neiman Marcus and other sites..and their things are exquisite. I splurged on a gorgeous turquoise necklace (first one) and have been hooked on their line ever since. Total statement pieces…va va voom kind of pieces! I wore the turquoise necklace with a gorgeous red chiffon gown to a wedding held at a yacht club two years ago and have to say I looooooved my outfi, it ranks right up there as one of my all time faves. Turquoise and red together…oh yes! Here’s a sampling of the beautiful pieces they create…..

Pretty amazing huh? Granted you aren’t wearing this bling to the market or a school meeting but for a special occasion or night out..these pieces are soooo gorgeous. Love their style…Jose and Maria, if you are reading this, and need someone to “test out” your pieces…I am willing able and will do it for free:)

My outdoor pillows. Several of you asked about the pattern. I am going to do a post on my pillows and the selection process. But for the record the gorgeous fabric is Chiang Mai by Schumacher…its a stunning pattern!

And here they are, this is still being “tweaked” but I am officially in love with these pillows!!

Dough bowls! A new batch of dough bowls after a long dry spell. I am getting in some rounds (about 18″ round) a hard to get size, and a handful of 20-24″ and then one really big one, about 34″. As usual if you have been waiting on one, just email me, they go really fast and are exceptionally beautiful! Due here next week….woo hoo.

A great new movie…The Wolf of Wall Street.  I am itching for a great movie..haven’t seen one in ages. Come on Hollywood…you are slacking! So The Wolf of Wall Street is coming out soon and this is particularly fun for me because both of the main houses in the movie incidentally belong to two of my friends! I got to see the filming at one of them but was sworn to secrecy at the time. It was so exciting to “be on set” and see Leo who was totally in character and adorable cute little Martin Scorsese. It was quite a production and the movie looks like its going be one heck of an  entertaining story……..then you factor in  that its based on a true story and it really makes it one to watch! Here is the trailer…….

White love. Remember my post on my love of all things white? Well take a look at this stunning dinner table that a reader sent me. How beautiful!! Thank you Nancy for sharing……

A new favorite nail polish. I am obsessed with this color, Go Ginza by good ol Essie. Its on my toes and fingernails (and I don’t usually wear polish on my fingers because its such maintenance)! But I am seriously in love with this gorgeous Essie color..its so perfect for summer. It is the perfect blend of a pale lilac, light pink and white…….hello Ginza:)

A great new book! Calling all readers! I need a great book pronto. I am talking one I just cannot put down. I am itching to read a great book. Last two I read was The Burgess boys and Rules of Civility, both I loved. Please leave your suggestions in the comment box!!

Bill Gates for President. It is likely that most if not all of you have seen this circulated but boy is it ever true. And so good that it warrants getting passed around some more…Bill Gates, I would vote for you for President in a heartbeat!! Common sense goes a long long way:) It really is worth reading the entire way through…..

This should be posted in every school or kid’s bedroom.
Love him or hate him, he sure hits the nail on the head with this.!!!

Bill Gates recently gave a speech at a High School about
eleven (11) things they did not and will not learn in school.
He talks about how feel-good, politically correct teachings
created a generation of kids with no concept of reality and
how this concept set them up for failure in the real world.

Rule 1 : Life is not fair – get used to it!
Rule 2 : The world doesn’t care about your self-esteem.
The world will expect you to accomplish something
BEFORE you feel good about yourself.
Rule 3 : You will NOT make $60,000 a year right out of high school.
You won’t be a vice-president with a car phone until you earn both.
Rule 4 : If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss
Rule 5 : Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity.
Your Grandparents had a different word for burger flipping:
They called it opportunity.
Rule 6 : If you mess up, it’s not your parents’ fault,
so don’t whine about your mistakes, learn from them.
Rule 7 : Before you were born, your parents weren’t as boring
as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills,
cleaning your clothes and listening to you
talk about how cool you thought you were:
So before you save the rain forest
from the parasites of your parent’s generation,
try delousing the closet in your own room..
Rule 8 : Your school may have done away with winners and losers,
but life HAS NOT. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades
and they’ll give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer.
*This doesn’t bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.
Rule 9 : Life is not divided into semesters.
You don’t get summers off and very few employers
are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF.
*Do that on your own time.
Rule 10 : Television is NOT real life.
In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.
Rule 11 : Be nice to nerds.
Chances are you’ll end up working for one..

The charm of Charlottesville!

About a week and a half ago,  I had the good fortune to take a short sidetrip to Charlottesville while visiting family and  to visit my niece in the area taking summer courses with my sister and mom. Think girls trip…..such fun! I love Charlottesville. It’s a truly beautiful part of the country….rolling hills, green fields that seem endless, a charming Southern downtown with a truly traditional flair (my favorite kind) and of course we paid a visit to beautiful UVA where we got to tour a special family exhibit/hall from an ancestor who helped find the university (it was  a thrill)!

So between the fun company, tired but happy feet, endless laughter, non stop energy, great  shopping and beautiful backdrop that is Charlottesville….it made for a perfect little side trip. Without further adue…here are some of the highlights! You know I believe in a lot of pictures so take a seat…….

First here are some highlights from the gorgeous Caspari shop, my sister said she felt like she was in my home (a big compliment as I loooove the style)! It was a “must stop”……

They had so many different lines from food to china to paper goods to clothing, my senses were on overdrive!

Lots of great books! Can never have too many…right?

I have a definite “thing” for beautiful paper goods and Caspari reigns surpreme in this field!

Ditto giftwrap…one as pretty as the next!

This pattern alone was enough to inspire me to throw another party….on second thought, no thanks:)

Gorgeous table settings….all soooo my taste!
The vivid oranges were stunning here!
And the gorgeous Juliska china that is such a hit this year on full display!

How pretty is this! The colors just beautiful!
Anything with a trellis pattern always gets my attention……
And of course you know I was drawn to this charming vignette……

Gorgeous urns were in abundance!
Love this green tole sconce/lantern…..

And fell in love with these beautiful french blue painted side chairs…would go perfect in my bedroom!

Monogram? Yes please!

The blue and white was in abundance…..thanks Caspari for the gorgeous tour!

Even on a rainy day the pedestrian mall is charming and wonderful and oozes Southern elegance…..

Another darling shop full of beautiful home accessories…..

Spotted this adorable balcony with this charming setup……

And the tour of UVA begins…here is Cabell Hall (the old one, a new one is being built)

The countryside is just breathtaking, I couldn’t stop taking pictures!

I looooove taking pictures of farms, give me a silo, blue skies and I just go click happy!

See…I told you I love silos and farms:)

Monticello…first stop, gift shop! How cute and appropriate are these mini blue and white dinner plate ornaments!

Thomas Jefferson himself….

The magnificent gardens, I just couldn’t get over how amazing they were…I would spend all day there!

Walking up to Monticello……

Fell in love with all the beautiful potted topiaries, I have a one track mind…..

Monticello…..

The grounds are just specatacular with a seemingly endless array of beautiful specimens of every kind

The beautiful garden pavillion he built in his retirement years to be alone, read, write, it is breathtaking in that its perched very high and has the most magnificent views…..

Entrance to his gravesite and private family burial ground, still in use today…..

The charming restaurant, Michie Tavern where we stopped in for lunch…….

Do I spy a gift shop?
Just a pretty entryway, the red door got me!

Back to UVA…..

Dorms today that are highly sought after…..

At every turn UVA is one beautiful place!

Guess who?

The Rotunda and great lawn…..gorgeous!

Makes me proud:)

Steps up to Cabll Hall……
The beautiful amphitheater….how unique for a college campus!

Entrance to one of the professors apartments…not too shabby!
And this darling house is where yours truly would want to reside if I were teaching there:)

How can I show you pictures of Charlottesville and not include a saucer sized magnolia!

Missed going to And George which was a bummer,  as they were closed but took a few pics of the charming topiaries!

The idyllic countryside..just couldn’t get enough!

An entrance to one of the many horse farms…….

Beautiful Keswick Hall…..the place to stay in Charlottesville!

What is it about a small red barn against a darkening rainy sky in the country? Beautiful!

So there is my little recap of beautiful Charlottesville, it was a whirlwind tour but such fun and I most definitely will be back. I have friends to see and things to do and cannot wait. Perhaps later summer or early fall and this definitely has me revisiting my idea for a southern road trip with my mom! My visit there has whet my appetite for my insatiable thirst for more southern charm (We had talked about a while back) would love to visit all the great cities in the south, put my diet “on hiatus” so I could indulge in all the great foods that that South is known for! How about you, been to Charlottesville? Any southern cities on your agenda? Thanks as always for stopping in!

Hope you are well…..last night we got to see Paul Simon perform (got there late but boy is his voice amazing)! It was a fundraiser at the beautiful Plaza Hotel, I must say I love any kind of political events because you get there early and leave early (sounding like an old lady or what)? The Plaza though it looked beautiful has changed so much…kind of sad to see an iconic hotel lose some of its lustre. The famed Oak Bar gone. After a well reported fight with rental agents and new tenants. But seriously Paul Simon’s voice is so beautiful……really natural and smooth. La la la la  li……

Yes I mean hurricane lanterns not the storms:) I loooove hurricanes and have several pair and believe you can never have too many, case in point would be one look around my own home, on my dining room table, console tables, out on the patio, in my living room……they are everywhere! So after popular demand, I am now carrying the gorgeous ones I have abundantly in my own home on my online shop! When trying to to put together a vignette, a single or pair of hurricanes is a great place to start. They give height, texture, and lets not underestimate the beautiful lighting they give off when they are lit with candles. In addition they double as flower vases and great seasonal decorative objects, which can be filled with fall leaves, acorns, pinecones and seashells. Yes….hurricanes are a good thing!

Today I am featuring many different interiors that show you how beautiful hurricanes look in virtually any kind of room, in almost any setting. Do you like the look?
Now let’s take a look at  hurricanes in action, shall we…….

Here they are on my coffee table flaking a large planter, love the delicate etching!

A large single oversized hurricane on a coffee table always works,  Ralph Lauren

Stunning vignette of a cluster of hurricanes……just gorgeous! Good Life of Design

Stunning oversized glass hurricanes grace this stunning island home of Hilary and  Galen Weston, AD

Definitely always perfect for a dining table, not to mention the soft lighting at night is unbeatable! My home

A beautiful wicker pair adorn this gorgeous table in this coastal setting, House to home

A single oversized hurricane on a piano is a beautiful statement, Rinfret

Love them for the outdoors and have several myself……

Love the scale that these add to the dining room, Cathy Kincaid

Another pair of the cut crystal perfect for a coffee table vignette, my home

Love the look of staggered heights for a dramatic outdoor setting!

Love a huge hurricane on a coffee table, Ralph Lauren

A beautiful amber colored pair add height and beauty to this gorgeous setting, Rinfret

Love them in clusters on a large scale dining table or console table..they have a lot of impact!

Once again, another gorgeous dining area that has a pair of pretty hurricanes, Sandra Nunnerly

My own hurricanes being put to good use!

Ralph Laurens own dining room….of course he gets it!

And they work beautifully on a console table as seen here in this pretty living room!

This is so dramatic! I love a lined path for a party with large oversized hurricanes and floating candles, gorgeous! Dazzle me decor

Summer white……..and a giveaway!

Good morning! Hope you had a fabulous weekend. Ours was a lot of fun and busy…. We were invited to a ridiculously gorgeous party, words cannot describe. This was an “A L L O U T”, seeing is believing kind of party. It was a white party, where everything from the bars to the 6 foot plus models aka “the servers” were swathed in white, huge 5 foot crystal vases on the tables were filled with a liquid that actually turned color with the beat of the music, there were dancers in white sequins head to toe who entertained us with moves that I thought only performers from Cirque de Soleil could do (who knows given the magnitude of this party, they probably were from Cirque du Soeliel)!  The DJ was brought over from Greece, I kid you not…need I say more? It was crazy, amazingly beautiful!

I soooooo wish I had been able to take pics, my phone died and believe me I would have at least snapped a few (inconspicuously of course)! If I come across any, you know I will share! Until my parties last week, I was toying with the idea of having a summer party myself in August, and ironically it was going to be an all white party with a Caribbean/reggae theme( love reggae music) but suddenly I have lost my enthusiasm so maybe a fall party:) Moving along……

I LOVE white. In all its many “shades”, from bright crisp white to soft creamy off whites. Summer, spring, fall and winter….white always rocks. But to me, in summer white truly reigns supreme. Is there anything prettier than an all white outfit, a beautiful white room, a patio adorned with white cushions and white flowers, I mean I could go on….but white is just so serene, gorgeous and  crisp. Today’s post is devoted to all things white, I would love to know if you share the love.

I could be very happy living in an all white world….white bedroom and living room, a white kitchen, outside spaces with accents of white and a closet brimming with crisp white clothes! Practical perhaps not all the time but beautiful…yes indeed! So take a look and let me know what you think!

Also you must visit Art by Karena who is featuring The Enchanted Home shop today….where I am offering a wonderful giveaway!

An all white hotel…oh yes! The Betsy in South Beach…oooh la la!

This is my dream beach house living room..not too bad, huh? Love it!

Love this all white patio..including the white painted brick fireplace, gorgeous!

Love the look and ease of white slipcovers, especially for a beach/coastal home! Homebunch

An all white beach house…oh yea! Decoholic
A bunch of gorgeous white flowers…..oh yes!

Soft bleached woods and white go together like waves and sand, lobster and butter, cherry and pie…..

LOVE this room…..so soft, tranquil and elegant but still very inviting!
A white bedroom feels so fresh

White on the patio is always appealing, very crisp and clean, love it because you can easily add just a touch of color with a few pillows, Veranda

Even a vintage truck in white looks so fabulous and chic

I would have a hard time turning down any of these scrumptious white desserts!

The allure and appeal of an all white kitchen will never go out of style…so classic!

White nail polish…love it especially against a tan!

White at its prettiest! Mykonos, Greece…wow!

Stunning white butlers pantry, timelessly elegant! Catalano via Homebunch
Love the idea of beautiful white oversized hurricanes for summertime entertaining, EMP
Gorgeous all white bathroom….love it! House Beautiful

Such a pretty bedroom, all white with touches of green, Homedidit

Isn’t this romantic? Love the bleached wood floors, painted furniture and all white theme…gorgeous!

Gorgeous room, the textured wallpaper gives it some dimension and design but it’s so serene…….

Love the idea of an all white movie theater! Just have to be careful with the candy……

An all white pool house? Absolutely…this stunning creation is from Catalano Builders

Love the all white theme for a summer party, this one is gorgeous! Erineverafter

A stunning white marble bathroom is a timeless classic like no other!

Yes, even white dogs can get in on the white summer theme……look at this party dude!
So there is a recap on white and all the beautiful ways to incorporate it for the summer months. Do you love white too? It is one color that instantly brings serenity, peace, calm and crispness to any room it touches. Love as always to know what you think. Wishing you a fabulous day.
