Reflections on 2016 and Happy New Year!

Hello and Happy New Year’s Eve……when you read this I will have been away at one my favorite spots, my new home away from home, Palmetto Bluff where we will ring in the new year for some much  needed R and R. I will get back to my usual Sunday on Seven next week but today is no ordinary day….it’s New Years Eve!!  I prepared this ahead of time and fingers crossed it posts when it’s supposed to,  Saturday morning.  Hard to believe that we are down to the last few days of 2016. Overall it has been a great year, one filled with so many wonderful “highs” and thankfully not too many “lows”.

I am grateful that you were there with me along for the ride to share in so many adventures, many more to come! As I have done the last few years, I like to feature a favorite post for every month from the last year (had a hard time choosing as there were many) and a few personal reflections after that.

Hope you enjoy…..

January- Be careful what you wish for ( major snowstorm)!

February- An homage to Carolyne Roehm

March- My Day at The New York Flower Market part 2

April-  About those dining room drapes

May–  I left my heart in Nashville- part 2

June- It’s All Set, June

July- The 411 on edesign

August-  A very special birthday luncheon

September- Under the spell of Turks and Caicos

October- A very special birthday luncheon (another one)!

November– Let’s talk holiday greens

December- Decking the halls 2016

My reflections of 2016-

Life is not perfect….for anyone. I always go through life assuming everyone is fighting some kind of a battle and try to give a break to all, hoping that someone else might do that to me one day (especially when I need the “pardon”). I think at the end of the day, most of us are doing the very best we can.

There is not a price to be put on family and togetherness. Time can be so fleeting…..I feel so lucky that both my parents are with me and I do not take  advantage of a single day to call and speak to them or better yet to have them come visit. My boys are all grown up and though they are adults…to me they are still my little boys. I cherish every minute I can spend with them and really and truly appreciate each of them more every day.

The best things in life really are free…thought about that on Christmas day. We have a huge 16 foot sofa in our movie room and we were all were down there on Christmas day watching a movie and I thought during those two hours, that it just doesn’t get better than that:)

Health is well….oh boy is that true. You don’t realize it until you are aren’t feeling well then even the smallest obstacle in life feels huge. I have been ultra blessed to have good health but am not going to take advantage of it, I plan on shedding a few pounds and definitely  exercising more in 2017…really and truly:) And that includes getting the dreaded colonoscopy that I should have gotten last year.

Always remember to take care of yourself first. When you feel good, you want to pass it along. When I am running ragged, I have learned to recognize it and stop and do something for myself whether its a bubble bath, a walk, a little retail therapy, reading, it is amazing how almost always it complete recharges me. Very important to take care of numero uno! BE KIND TO YOURSELF…..it pays off in spades! I have also learned the power of a power nap, just resting for 15-20 minutes…THANKS MOM!

Never pass up the opportunity to make someone else feel good. Even the tiniest gesture can mean more than you can possibly know. Why take the time to expend negative energy when you can expend the same doing or saying something nice?

There is no time like the present, if there is something you have been considering doing, a trip you wanted to take, a person you want to reach out to…DO IT! You  may never get that chance again. The older I get the more I practice this, seizing the moment and day.

Quality over quantity. This does not apply to everything but for me, when I buy something of high quality whether its clothing or food, I cherish and treasure it way more. Oh yea, and that includes your inner circle. I treasure my beloved circle of amazing friends.

When I set a goal, I approach it two fold- I set a short term goal (first step of the goal overall)  and a long term goal (the big picture). It makes a goal much more achievable to break it up and set a realistic milestone…..this approach has really helped me a lot and I have been successful with this approach in achieving a number of goals.

So friends,  these are my musings as we close the chapter to 2016 and start anew. 2016 was a great year for me, not to say there were not bumps in the road, there surely were. But overall it was a good year and I am determined that 2017 will be even better!

You are a big part of why 2016 was a great year….you make what I do so much fun. I so love the connections I get to make from people all over the world and when I hear that my blog is a happy part of your life….it thrills me! So many thanks for following along, your kindness, support and friendship. I feel the best is yet to come and I am having such fun sharing my life with you.

Raising our virtual glasses of champagne to a year ahead of good health, happiness, and lots of laughter. Wishing each and everyone of you a wonderful and prosperous New Year…cheers! Until next time…..

A recap on Christmas 2016……

Hello friends! It’s so hard to believe and always bittersweet to realize that Christmas is over. That whole buildup and in 24 hours it’s all over and a thing of the past. Then we are left with the winter doldrums and in our case in NY, a long cold winter……. ugh!

This Christmas was a particularly good one. I think I appreciated it so much more this year because I have been working full time (and then some) and having a few days to do nothing but relax, cook, drink wine, watch movies, reminiscence with my family…it was the best and I can say I truly enjoyed and savored every minute.

Is it a lot of work? Yes, I think we all know the answer to that question, the marathon giftwrapping sessions, endless meals, making sure everyone is happy and well fed……but I would do it all again in a heartbeat if I could. What can I say? I really do love the holidays, despite the craziness and overload:)

I had fun setting up the tables for various meals and thankfully was mindful to have my camera or iPhone nearby much of the time to snap quick pics here and there. So here is a recap of some of what I was able to capture, which I am grateful for as it will be fun one day to  look back and think about Christmas 2016……

For breakfast I changed things up a bit and loved the touch of red for some early morning cheer. With older boys who enjoy the luxury of sleeping in, breakfast was done in a few shifts aka “seatings” But every breakfast started with some kind of fresh fruit, fresh juice and of course strong coffee!

I like adding small touches to make a table feel extra special, like adding this small wreath to the teapot pedestal….

And I made many yummy appetizers, for Christmas eve lunch we skipped a real lunch and feasted on tapas all afternoon since we were having a big dinner that night…..

I love making antipasta platters and my mint juleps are the perfect size for holding things like olives, breadsticks, mushrooms, etc……

I love this little Chinese rice bowls (mini) they are perfect for small bit size appetizers, in this case this was pasta and just enough to satisfy but not too much as to feel too full plus extra brownie points for the cuteness factor

And by late day this is what it looked liked, champagne, food, a roaring fire, a great movie…..ingredients for a perfect day-

And for some that means a late day siesta…..

For Christmas dinner since we were only 8 I decided to make it more intimate and cozy and set it up in the breakfast room. It was two fold, one is we never use this room anymore  as my husband and I sit at the kitchen island  and secondly we set up Christmas dinner buffet style (did a late lunch/early dinner) and this room offers close proximity to the kitchen…..plus I really love this room and love any chance to use it.

What it lacked in formality I made sure to make up for with the “pretty factor”. I brought out my Blue Mikado china and worked with fresh greens, sugar cones, topiaries and paper whites. I added fresh cuttings from outside on each silver charger for that extra special little something. It all came together beautifully and topped with lots of candles it really came out so pretty-

And then I whipped out my “big gun” camera, my Nikon and took a few more pictures, the clarity is hard to beat-

Such fun to think back on this fun and wonderful time at home with my family. I am sure like it was for me, many of you have special memories of this most wonderful time of the year. It’s important to savor these times as with the blink of an eye it’s all over and onto the next thing….

I have taken away a few things to keep in mind for next year and though I have said it before 2017 is going to be a year of being AHEAD of schedule which means preparing for Christmas starting in Aug/Sept and that includes planning a holiday party, Christmas cards and a bunch of other things that I would rather have under my belt by the time Dec rolls around.

In fact I may even start some kind of “holiday bloggers challenge” with imposed deadlines that we can all work on together, are you game? Something to brainstorm about for next year but in the meantime thanks for stopping in, wishing you a wonderful rest of the week as the holidays march on, let’s keep the spirit going! Until next time…….

Merry Christmas from our home to yours!

Hello and Merry Christmas! I am foregoing my usual Seven on Sunday today to enjoy this special and magical time of celebration, rest, family and togetherness (though I cannot wait to resume as I love doing my Sunday posts).

As we celebrate Christmas today Teddy and I want to send you our warmest greetings for the season and the very best in health and happiness in 2017.

I wish I had I could bottle the spirit and magic of this season to enjoy on a regular basis when life feels like its running away from you. Despite the frenzied pace, endless  giftwrapping sessions, calorie overload, parking lot quandaries,  late nights decorating…it always ends up  being the most magical day of the year!

Hope you enjoy this special day with those you love.   I want to say thank you for your friendship and support, you make what I do so rewarding and  a job I look forward to doing every single day.

I feel incredibly blessed today for so many things, not the least of which is all of my amazing readers and customers.  Merry Christmas, ho ho ho!

Decking the halls 2016

Hello friends!  Well this is a very busy week, we have gotten more orders out the door than I can count,  but now it’s time for me to concentrate on what I need to get done and suffice to say there is plenty! It was nice having the day on Sunday to reassess what still needs to get done, etc…. Now that the obligations, parties, get togethers are behind me, and I will admit I am kind of relived, I can fully concentrate on what is left to be done.

This year was an interesting holiday season because it was the first year I have worked full time (and then some) so found it  a bit more challenging in terms of juggling and scheduling. There were some things that honestly just had to fall to the wayside, sending out Christmas cards, my poor neglected front door planters, some areas around the house that I normally decorate had to take a back seat to priorities.

However, my tree that I am madly in love with more than made up for the things that didn’t get done however:) I could easily leave this tree up all year long! So here is a look at what was able to get done along with a few pictures from the Christmas party. I so wish I had a photographer because there were a lot of beautiful moments that I wish we could have captured. Oh well….maybe next year:)

So here is a look at how I decked the halls for 2016……

Flowers abound…they just make me happy!

Various vignettes throughout the house….

In the kitchen my paperwhites are going strong, some love the scent, others do not…I personally can’t get enough!

Beautiful super full wreath from Weston Farms, no one does them better

And this is kind of sad….my “attempt” at least starting my planters, but the pumpkins remained and here is my very lame planter scenario, let’s call this exhibit A in a “slice of real life”

Found a beautiful way to use the red flowers and add red roses to the small bud vases in my breakfast room

And on a chest in my breakfast room I added these pinecone/myrtle pieces, love the browns against the blue and white

This was taken during set up of our family Christmas party on Sat. (regrettably did not take more pictures) But first we got a beautiful snowfall the day before…really made it feel like Christmas!

Here are the few pictures I took with my Nikon then the battery died:(

And that friends is a wrap on Christmas 2016. It has been a fun, very full and extremely busy month. I am personally looking forward to Christmas eve knowing what’s done is done, putting up my feet surrounded by my family, opening up a bottle of champagne in front of a crackling fire and cheering the holidays. And you?

Thank you for stopping in, wishing everyone a wonderful day, and may these next few days be as stress free as is humanly possible as we all plow forward to get those last minute details wrapped up. Cheers! Until next time…..

Random musings as seen through my iPhone

Hello! Coming off the heels of a super busy weekend…and frankly as much fun as it was,  I am glad it’s over. It’s back to work and  assessing all that needs to be done.

It’s crunch time for us that celebrate Christmas this week…and I am sure like me, you have a list a mile long of things to accomplish this week. I made a big “master list” Sunday night and broke it down with tasks to do each day. I now feel in control and know in the end it really does all get done.

A few things before I share with you recent pics-

Highlights from a luncheon I hosted for a treasured friend….

Had such fun mulling over trims with a client for her dining room…so many to love!

Felt sooo much love on my birthday, it was  three days of gifts, dinners and flowers:)

And even felt the love at work~

Went to NYC on my bday and spent part of the day in Eataly sampling our way through on a private tour and had a fabulous lunch at Manga

After a wonderful birthday it was back to the world of boxes that I have lived in lately:)

Loving my blue and white Christmas this year and will never go back to red and green:)

How gorgeous is this work of art sent by none other than taste maker Bettie Pardee….love it and cannot wait to put it in my office to enjoy everyday!

Ribbon/giftwrapping theme this year

Friends beautiful elegant entry foyer whose home we went to for  a Christmas party

One big perk of having your own shop is an plethora of great gifts always on hand! We filled this two tier silver platter with adorable Christmas cookies from a local bakery as a great hostess gift!

We got a few inches of snow a few days ago which was a wonderful surprise

It is always fun to look back at the highlights of the last week or so…and there were many. Lots of crazy, hectic, stressful moments too but who needs to see those, lol. Thanks for stopping in, wishing you a wonderful day and a super productive week.  Until next time……

________________

Well, this is one tired elf after our super fun holiday Christmas party last night. We all know the work that goes into planning a party, every detail must be thought of but it was well worth it. It came out just beautiful and now that there are about seven little kids in our family, I can’t tell you how much fun it was to see the magic of the season through their eyes.

Best part is great leftovers today! We have another holiday party tonight but I plan to spend a lot of time home today resting my poor achy feet, watching a movie or two and indulging in all the yummy leftovers.

As I do every Sunday, here are my seven things this Sunday…..

1 NEWEST ITEMS AT ENCHANTED HOME. Some amazing things just came in, they will be offered up the week after Christmas. The chinoiserie tole pieces are nothing less than gorgeous, stay tuned!!

And here are just a few of the super gorgeous new porcelain pieces, introducing a number of new items to my extensive porcelain collection, so many exciting things coming for 2017! There will be a presale in about 1 week to ten days for this order arriving in mid January

My colored ornaments just got professional photographed. Yes, it’s late in the game but the new site’s delay is to blame, what can I do! They are going to be added online tonight and we will guarantee Christmas delivery for all orders placed by Monday..love how they came out. Click here to see all the blue and white’s already online

2 A BEAUTIFUL IDEA OF A HOLIDAY CENTERPIECE. I saw this over at my friend, Bettie’s blog, Private Newport  and was blown away by how pretty this was, she generously shared her “how to” and surprisingly it is pretty easy. Though I am all set up now I will most certainly attempt this  next year, it is magical! Great job Bettie! Click here to see the how to over at a favorite blog, Private Newport-

3. INSTAGRAMS OF INTEREST More holiday beauty this weekend, let’s cram it in while we can:) Hard to believe this is the last Sunday before Christmas, bring on the holiday inspiration!

And my favorite this week is this darling shot because not only are these the cutest dog family on Instagram but getting all FIVE to pose with Santa is nothing short of  a Christmas miracle!!

4.A NEW LIPSTICK COLLECTION FROM MAC. I love Mac lipsticks, to me, they are simply the best. I am addicted to the color Angel and when it’s in stock I buy 3 and 4 tubes of it. If they were to ever discontinue it, I will lead the march all the way to their headquarters in protest.

Their colors are amazing and the formula is perfect. There is a new collection from Mariah Carey (go figure) but I am loving the colors, all variations of soft pinks and nudes. I ended buying three of the new colors, click here to see all.

5. ONE VERY CLEVER CHRISTMAS TREE NAPKIN. In the spirit of Christmas being a week away for all those hostesses out there who will be hosting dinner, here is one final touch to up your A game…..a Christmas  tree napkin and it is surprisingly super easy thanks to Sand and Sisal, love it!

6.MY LATEST HOLIDAY TOUCHES. OK I will admit I am late to the starting gate this year and when I look at some of my fellow Instagrammers homes where they have not one, not two, not three but four and sometime 6 Christmas trees…it leaves me feeling a bit behind.

But I keep saying I have done the best I could and what I have done I must say I really love. With our Christmas party last night, I added my usual paperwhites and fresh greens and it is amazing how much those three simple things can do. Here are a few quick pics taken with my iPad as I scurried to get things ready, I will have a full post later this week on all my holiday decor.

7. SUNDAY’S SURVEY. This is partially guilt driven. Until a few years ago I would never ever have thought about not sending holiday cards, it was as part of the holidays as setting up a tree. But two years ago I got so crazy busy that it didn’t happen and I beat myself up over it and vowed to get them done in August of the following year. That did not happen, I quickly scrambled at the very last minute for cards and got some out right before Christmas but didn’t put the normal energy and effort into them as I once had.

It mostly has to do with that we always sent a photo card and now that my sons are grown and older, they just don’t want to participate and even getting all three of them together is challenging.

So this year I can’t believe it, again I have no card and am facing the fact that it’s likely not going to happen this year. Makes me kind of sad as this is so “not me”. But I am putting it on the record, NEXT YEAR I will start thinking of my cards in Sept and giving myself a deadline of Nov. 1st to have them done by, whether its my three sons, our family or just Teddy:) So what do yo have to say on the subject of Christmas cards?

I hope I have some company out there! I really am going get my Christmas cards done next year with a Nov. 1st deadline……… really and truly! Thank you as always for stopping by, wishing you a wonderful and hopefully relaxing day.

Good luck as we all call it wrap this week and I know we are all going to be incredibly busy. Take good care and remember those little mini breaks do wonders:) Now excuse me while I go and have a bite of bake brie for breakfast:)

Holiday Love Round 2

Hello. from the frozen tundra of New York,  we are having ridiculously cold weather, way too soon! Son came in last night from college, flight was delayed (no surprise) and he got home at around 1 and of course the first thing he texted me on his way home from the airport was do you have dinner? Um, at 1am no not really….Domino’s pizza to the rescue!  I couldn’t believe they deliver at 1:30am! And so the sleepless nights begin, seriously though it’s so nice to have him home, even Teddy woke from his slumber to greet his best bud.

Moving along to round 2 of our contest……think you can handle even more holiday gorgeousness? Well it’s here, round two of Holiday Love! Another batch of incredible inspiration and so much beauty. This is not an easy decision so put your thinking caps on and have fun.

You have the day today to vote for your favorite two in round 2. Tomorrow we will have a showdown round between the two top picks (one from each round) and a winner will be announced on Sunday morning.

Here we go, remember you can choose your two favorites which best say Holiday Love…..

So much to love, if this doesn’t put you in a holiday mood, don’t know what will. I have way too many favorites, so narrowing it down is not easy. But alas you can only choose 2, so please cast your vote and be sure to check back for round 2 tomorrow! Thank you again to all who participated and to all those taking part in the vote.

To everyone who participated- I am sorry for those we had to turn away, but we really had to cap it at 76 and went over the original 70 cap!~ If you submitted two pictures and only see one, then that means the other will be on the post tomorrow. In some cases as we were full, we were only able to accept one of your pictures.

I love spreading a little holiday cheer and magic and thanks to my talented customers/readers, they make it so easy. Enjoy your day and thanks for stopping in.
