Rugs…….who doesn’t love a rug? The term “magic carpet” is no joke….they truly have the ability to add a little magic to a room. The perfect way to start with any room, the carpet is often the foundation on which a room is built/created. It is often the very inspiration for how the room evolves and in virtually any project i have been involved with, under ideal circumstances, we have begun with the rug.
When you take them out of a room the room suddenly looks a little naked, don’t you think? The beauty of rugs is that with the vast array of styles and colors (and prices), there is truly something out there….. for every possible style, modern and sleek to traditional and old world, fresh and crisp to nautical and charming…..today in conjunction with this amazing giveaway, lets take a look at some rooms that have successfully used the rug to pull the room together. What do you think? Are you a rug lover too?

Always been a fan of Ralph Lauren gorgeous inviting study and the magnificent antique Heriz rug….stunning!
Rugs are the perfect accessory for a front or side entry, practical and to add warmth to a space
Who said rugs are just for indoors! Love the dhurrie with this chic seating arrangement, West Elm
Love the clean crisp vibe with the elegant grays and whites tied in beautifully with this Thomas O Brien room and rug.

Adore these colors, Linda Floyd married the perfect rug with this gorgeous room

Even in more transitional spaces, a rug works….here they used a very large sculpted tonal rug, Fisher Weisman
Love rich colored rugs on dark wood floors as shown in this exquisite foyer, Linda Floyd

Gilded in gold…….gorgeous!

We have a winner (again)!
Congratulations to my follower, M. Murphy!
You have won the gorgeous Safavieh french chair. I have sent you a message so please respond within the next 48 hours.

So, what is your opinion on gold rooms? I was recently at a private function in someones home and I must say the entire house, bathed in soft golds with lots of texture, was jaw droppingingly stunning. Wish I could have taken some pictures! So it got me thinking, as often happens when I am feeling particularly inspired, about gold rooms, gold fabrics and gold wallpaper…decorating an entire room in gold. I think as these pictures prove, done right…it can be breathtaking, soothing, calming, lavish and luxurious. Gold can be very bold or it can be subtle depending on the type of fabric used, the wall application, the lighting, the formality of the room and of course how much gold is used. And gold has many hues, bright brassy gold, a silvery gold, a coppery gold, a yellow gold and so on. It doesn’t always have to be dripping with formality, sometimes a small touch of gold is just the right touch to create a little drama or a little sparkle. Do you have a favorite? And of course gold doesn’t exclusively apply to formal traditional rooms as you will see below.  Would love to know, as always what you think!

Good morning! I absolutely love, love, love chinoiserie. It is so elegant, timeless and regal looking. I hope to use it in my dining room and formal powder room.  I have looked at Gracie, Paul Montgomery, De Gournay,Stark and recently met with Audrey Sterk, a talented artist from Nantucket who I am also going to consider to complete these rooms. I also had the good fortune to visit the Gracie studio and speak with them at length about their beautiful work and get a tour of their showroom and their  many fabulous offerings. Still family owned and run, they employ a few dozen people  who run the production department. I wish I had brought my camera but this was before I knew I was going to have a blog! I saw many many fabulous things.
I have over time, collected many images, from books, magazines and the web that are “inspiration pictures” for the look I am after. So without further ado….here are some of those pictures, all to me, so very beautiful. They give a room a sort of magical quality.  I have included sources where I know them, but several of these pictures I have had for a while (well before I had a blog and knew I would be using them:) Do you have a favorite? Would love to know which!

If money was no object…..I would use this fabulous antique limited number of  french motif collection of panels from Gracie..aren’t the colors amazing! (I can see this with rich green, gold and red billowy silk panels with soft lighting only from sconces and a gorgeous chandelier…while I am dreaming, make that a Baccarat chandelier!) Also love anything with pheasants

Transitional trends…tres chic!

Transitional living is bigger than ever. This is further evidenced by what I saw at both the Paris Maison&Objet show and the NY gift fair.  What is it and what does it look like? It is a blending of traditional and contemporary furniture, finishes and materials to create a soft, elegant, sophisticated but simple style. There tends to be minimal use of color on the main pieces of furniture, typically you will see a neutral palette and sometime it is punctuated by a pop of color, lets say on a pillow, a lamp, a piece of art, an interesting rug or maybe an upholstered ottoman. The key elements in a fabulous transitional room are:

Accessories– minimal use of them, and the accessories that are used are simple and understated, an example might be a potted orchid, a neat pile of coffee table books, a large decorative box, a grouping of black and white photos in highly polished silver frames. It is not cluttered.
Fabrics– often you see cottons, linens, velvets, ticking, leathers, suede’s and occasionally a chenille or corduroy type fabric. Natural fabrics are very big right now.
Furniture– Again you see the clean lines, either straight or rounded. Lack of ornamentation and a purposeful simplicity to the design. The scale is ample but not intimidating. On occasion you might see a very funky piece in an otherwise understated room.

So lets take a look at what transitional living looks like today. Though its not the style my own home will be furnished in, I have an immense appreciation for this style when its done right and if I were to ever a buy  second home, a Manhattan pied a terre or a beach home, this is the style I think I might choose with a slight twist of adding a few more traditional touches. Barbara Barry made this look very popular and her excellent taste level continues to set new trends. It is very clean, inviting, crisp and fresh. Would love to know what you think….do you have a favorite?

Love this dining room that is indoors/outdoors by Frank Pontero, great colors
An elegant master suite by Suzanne Kassler where there is a hint of pale pink/lavender

Another understated dining room by Suzanne Kassler, again minimal use of color

As seen in Traditional magazine, this light and airy living room is made modern with some interesting pops of color
These “sofas” are suspended by hanging rods…..so interesting, love the colors by Brad Ford
This pretty and inviting room by Deborah Lipner gets a little punch from the zebra rug…I happen to think it looks great
An attractive dining area by Anne Marie Barton, always like banquette seating at a table

Transitional trends…tres chic!

?Transitional living is bigger than ever. This is further evidenced by what I saw at both the Paris Maison&Objet show and the NY gift fair. ?What is it and what does it look like?

Though its not the style my own home will be furnished in, I have an immense appreciation for this style when its done right and if I were to ever a buy ?second home, a Manhattan pied a terre or a beach home, this is the style I think I might choose with a slight twist of adding a few more traditional touches. Barbara Barry made this look very popular and her excellent taste level continues to set new trends. It is very clean, inviting, crisp and fresh. Would love to know what you think….do you have a favorite?
