Bluff Diaries Chapter 12

Happy Thursday morning. Excited to be here with chapter 12 of the Bluff Diaries and really happy to tell you that things are really starting to  happen. It is finally looking like a real house and it is thrilling!

Lots of recent pics to share with you and then we will talk about today’s subject, bathroom lighting as an extension of last weeks post on flooring. This is the first time you are seeing the actual house, and it is incredibly exciting.

Some have asked who we are using for architect/builder and I must say I am really delighted with our experience with both our architect and builder. I have wanted to share them with you but was waiting until things were further along. The info is-

Builder- Nathan Cameron (click here to contact)

Architect- Court Atkins (click here to contact)

Nathan is what is referred to as a boutique builder, at any given time he takes on no more than about 4-8 houses and gets very personal with each building experience. I love that he is so into the details and sends us extensive weekly updates, there is a reason he is considered to be one of the most popular builders in The Bluff. He and his company has been a total pleasure to deal with. Our engines are just revving up but he has stayed right on schedule to the day, impressive in this world!

For our architect we used Court Atkins, they seem to be by far the most popular architect there and rightfully so. They were fantastic even from afar and with only two visits at executing exactly what we wanted, a pleasure to deal with and get this- they actually met almost every deadline! That is saying something in today’s world.

I must say they have been a dream team, and any reservations I had about doing this from afar quickly vanished when I saw what good/capable hands I am in…thanks guys!

And now onto today’s post….

Bathroom lighting, it is often the finishing touch for a bathroom and with today’s vast array of choices, it can make a real statement. My taste honestly has not wavered much over the last 10 or so years however in this house, we are going a bit more transitional and less formal than our house here in NY.

MASTER BATHS- I love sconce lighting, I could live with sconces only…the lighting they give is so beautiful day or night. In my bathroom I will have at least a pair possibly two. As I am going with a more transitional look, the lighting will follow suit.

I will have a chandelier/lantern and may be putting in one of my bell jars which would work very nicely there. For the sconces, love each of these equally and will likely put a pair for myself and a pair for my husbands bath. These are from a company I do a lot of business with, the quality is bar none.

Isn’t this so gorgeous? I feel it is a little bit more masculine so this could work beautifully for my husbands bath

This feels a little more delicate could work well for mine or the powder room

The square version

For the chandelier I am leaning towards one of the belljars from my shop but if I were to go another route these would be some contenders-

Most likely I will go with one of my wonderful belljars, not a bad one in the bunch but I would likely go with one  of the simpler styles.

This below would work well for my husbands bath, elegant and handsome

GUEST/KIDS BATHS- For the other bathrooms I will go with a simple polished nickel style and vary them in each bathroom. Something along this line-

POWDER ROOM- For powder room I like the idea of doing something a little dressier/stepping it up a bit….

Call me crazy but I ordered a pair of these as they were only $146!!! Click here to see, how could I pass them up. I know I will use them somewhere

Wow this has me excited over all of the beautiful lighting choices, so many pretty classically beautiful things to choose from. This is when it’s going to get fun and at the rate we are going, we will be at this stage before we know it. So…how about you? Anything here excite you? We are going for a cleaner, transitional look and I think we are well on the way.

Thank you for stopping by, wishing you a wonderful day and hope it’s feeling like spring wherever you might be, over here it still feels very much like winter! Until next time…

Accessory Alert- Orchids

Hello,  here I am with the second post on my newish series, Accessory Alert. If you missed my first post it was on how to use garden seats (click here).  This is a fun way to share with you various accessories I love and great ways to share how they are used. Today is all about something many of use and love, orchids. They are the essence of elegance, work in small and large spaces and go with any color scheme or room style.

An orchid can add a instant dose of sophistication and drama anywhere they are used, big and small. I personally love both real and faux and with the discovery of a favorite line of faux orchids for my own shop, I  mix them together and no one ever knows the difference. Great for those without a green thumb:)

I have them in several areas of my home and they always make me smile. So let’s take a look at a number of different  spaces around the home where orchids can add their magic…..

Seeing a big orchid plant on a center hall table is one of my most favorite ways to use them, Jennifer Cornell

An orchid on a coffee table is always a great idea, add a stack of books and a few smaller accessories and it’s a winning formula!

They most certainly very much have a place outdoors!! Arch Digest

Love seeing them in a hallways especially when it’s double the beauty!

Loving this gorgeous space with the blue and white and orchids, Ethan Allen

Always like seeing them on a pair of hallway consoles, so elegant! Christina Murphy

Perfect in a bathroom on a tubs ledge,  New England Home

A foyer is a perfect place for them and a beautiful way to welcome your guests

Love this space by talented Scott Snyder

A larger scaled orchid plan on a dinning table looks beautiful

Always perfect in a bright sunny spot in your kitchen! Better Homes and Gardens

One of my favorite places for them is a foyer, here with a chest and mirror this is the perfect trifecta Christina Murphy

They are great on desks too, Carlyle Design

Here is my own powder room, proof that blue and white goes with every color scheme!

A perfect balance for a long console is placing a large orchid arrangement dead center

They always work so beautifully on a center hall table, Pinterest

Loving a large scaled orchid in this fabulous shell…beautiful!

My own hall chest,  I keep this large faux orchid here and change out the small bud vases with whatever is in season

Don’t forget your bedroom, a perfect place or a smaller orchid arrangement, Phoebe Howard

Seven on Sunday

Hello friends! Hope you are well, and having a wonderful weekend. I first want to announce the winner of the porcelain giveaway planter. Congratulations goes to-

#81 SUSAN OSBORNE SANDERS

Please email me at theenchantedhome@gmail.com so we can get your lovely bowl on its way!

________________

Well after a pretty stressful week, it was nice to enjoy a busy but fun weekend. Went to a lovely party, dinner with friends and today is my much anticipated day of relaxation and just catching up on all the small things. I am just praying that spring weather starts to make it’s way in….. that gorgeous NYC day when it was 60 degrees seems like all but a distant memory. Just counting down the days. Here we go with my Seven on Sunday.-

1 A HEARTWARMING STORY DEPICTING THE AMERICAN DREAM My parents had recommended this, knowing first my insatiable love of horses and then secondly, that I appreciate a great human interest story.

This is worth seeing…and as I told me dad the kind of movie you would want your kids to be shown in school to teach so many lessons in life. What a wonderful and  heartwarming story…highly recommended.  As of a few days ago you can get this on Netflix-

2 PROVENCE ANYONE? Every summer we spend about a month in Montauk, we go back and forth which is a definite plus especially because I work full time now. However I have been dreaming of renting a home in Provence for a few weeks and being the dreamer I am started doing my “investigative research” 🙂

I would love nothing more than to spend a few weeks decompressing and fully immersing myself in the joie de vivre that is part of the unmistakable lifestyle of the French. Here are some of the magnificent homes I found from Only Provence (click here to visit) and get ready to dream a little)…..

And please do not blame me for a sudden case of “needing” to visit Provence,  only problem about going is you may never want to come back:) I can see myself now getting up early, making my French pressed coffee, walking in the garden, biking to town for fresh bread, ahh….I feel more relaxed just thinking of it.

3 NEW BAGS! I am so loving this raffia line of bags/totes and just got in some new styles. Sold out of the first shipment that was offered up in a flash sale. How pretty are they? They will soon be added to the site.

As you  know I am tweaking the site AGAIN and hope to have it go live AGAIN within a week to ten days. Once it does, the bags will be on the newly revised site. However if you are interested in any just contact me, at theenchantedhome@gmail.com.

4 INSTAGRAMS OF INTEREST. As always never short of incredible finds on Instagram. So much inspiration to love this week! Enjoy….

My favorite this week is this one below because….well, do you really need an explanation?

5 AN EXCITING NEW PROJECT! I am doing a sun room in a beautiful new home and so excited…of course I will share both the in progress pictures as well as the finished product with you as it happens.

Doing my trademark blue and white as I may use the professional photos for an ad down the road. Loving the mood board and how it’s all coming together….would love your take on which rug as I love them all and so torn.

Here is the raw space…of course will be sure to share the finished product with you.

Here is my concept board-

OK now your turn to help me pick the rug!! (some of these will be on my newly revised site)

CHOICE 2

CHOICE 3

CHOICE 4

6 NEW PERFUME OBSESSION. I just got this on Friday and am in love! I have been on the hunt for a great new fragrance and I have found it. It is also nice little perk that the packaging just happens to be in my favorite colors.

The newest, Mediterranean Honeysuckle from Aerin is AMAZING. Wore it yesterday and had 2 people stop to ask what I was wearing….it is my new favorite! Even my son said in his own words “it’s the best smelling perfume I have ever smelled”. If I got his endorsement, it’s good enough for me. Soooo good.  Click here to find out more.

7. SUNDAY’S SURVEY. If you are a parent, then this one’s for you. Here I am in my early 50’s with three grown young adult men and my worrying has not lessened, it’s actually gotten worse. THANKS MOM. I am convinced there is such a thing as the “worry gene” and I inherited all 100% of it!

I won’t even give you the more extreme examples of how bad it can be,  because you will think I am a crazy woman but I worry all the time. When they are getting on a plane. When they are driving. When they might want to break up with a girlfriend. When they are sick (that really does me in), when they have a headache, when they go to a concert. It is amazing that I do not take meds. A few friends who are like me do, swear by them but I am reluctant and really want to try and control this on my own.

On one hand I am proud of myself because I have learned that when I am reaching a near level of hysteria,  I am generally able to take a deep breath and repeat to myself all is well at this moment and there is no reason to panic…I then talk myself down. But man, this can be so debilitating…and exhausting.

I am not an anxious person in general, other than my severe claustrophobia then I would win a gold medal for that:) Just wondering if you have older kids (young adults on their own), do you worry like this too? Does it ever end?? Please tell me if does:) So your turn to weigh in….I will be waiting eagerly to see how you handle (or not) being a worried parent.

So there you have my Seven on Sunday this week. Hope you are enjoying a wonderful weekend.Thank you as always for stopping in. Until next time…..

Random musings as seen through my iPhone….

Hello and happy Saturday. Woke up to no snow, that’s always a good thing.  I really hope that winter is finally done and spring can usher it’s way in once and for all. With a lot of snow presently on the ground it just doesn’t feel like spring is going to really be here on Monday. The daffodils a week ago when it was 60 started coming up and now are covered in frozen snow:(

Today is the last day of the porcelain presale so be sure to stop by and check it out if you haven’t already. Its been so well received and the response has been phenomenal, always so great to know there are so many fellow blue and white addicts:)  Plus there is a great giveaway and today is the last day to enter! Click here to view

As I periodically do,  I share with you snippets of my life from the last week or so..of course the good, pretty and inspiring only! So without further ado here we go…..

Went to one of my happy places aka “New York flower district” and came home with some beauties…..

Enjoyed a wonderful meal with a great friend at Le Coucou in NYC, fabulous!!

These black beauties are heading to a rooftop apartment in Boston where they are going to plant them with large boxwood balls, so classic

It might feel still very much like winter outside, but indoors it’s all about spring and flowers!!

Upstairs hall got a little sprcueup

A pretty corner in my bedroom….the soft colors are so soothing, it’s my private little sanctuary

So loving these beautiful trims and fabrics we just decided on for a clients family room…cannot wait to see it done!

Awwwh….Teddy got a special little friend as a gift and loves his new furry friend

LOVE working on gorgeous trims and for this client, her new pillows are going to be out of this world!

This is how we do St. Patty’s day in our office….green gorgeouness overload! How amazing are the pillows above that I had made for a client, is that ginger jar tape not the greatest thing ever!

So there you have it, all the good stuff from this past week. Hope you enjoyed, thank you as always for stopping in. Wishing you a wonderful Saturday and an enjoyable weekend! Until next time…..

_____________________

Moving onto today’s post…..I periodically do a post specifically on my website and shop when there is a lot to update you on and there is quite a bit, consider this a little newsletter on all things Enchanted Home. There is a lot to share. Here is the latest and I am also offering up a giveaway (details on bottom) that you will most certainly want to take part in.

THE WEBSITE. OK, I know you have been patient. VERY patient, while I pursued my new website overhaul. When I launched my new site about seven weeks ago, I was excited but very frustrated (behind the scenes more than you can imagine) as it had been many months in the making and there were still a number of things not figured out, and to this day, a number of those issues remain, the frustration in all this was been ridiculous.

There is good news and a silver lining! I hired a new and very able company fixing all of these and then some. It is going to be a “cleaned up” much improved version of what I have now. With luck I will once again roll out a newly revised, improved version of what you see now.

Here are some of the open issues-

Pinterest  button – a new one will be installed and it’s the cutest pin it button I have seen yet-

Larger pictures with a hover capability to get a closer look at products with the little Pinterst button-

Many still not getting my emails (about 30% of you) This will be corrected and we will notify you when it has been corrected fully and back in working order (soon)!

Some still having issues checking out on shop online, best thing is to call when this happens which many of you do- this too will be overhauled and fully functioning

Some people having issues finding previous posts, or info on a specific subject- the search capabilities will be much more user friendly

My blog list will be on the side bar simliar to how it was before (even I miss it!)!

OK onto the fun stuff, what is new and in development-

NEW PRODUCTS! Lots of exciting things happening behind the scenes, working on the 2017 ornament collection (many of last years will be back) along with some new ginger jars and pagoda ornaments. We will get the first shipment late summer/early fall.

Flatware…so excited about this! There are also two more patterns not shown that are in the works. I will also offer serving spoons and forks for each pattern. Very excited about this and with luck these will be coming in late April/early May. I will offer an advance purchase/presale opportunity once they are well underway, stay tuned….

Staffordshire Dogs BIG NEWS…..these dogs are coming back!!! I did so well with these….the company I used closed their doors so I spent months looking for a new factory to start making my own. When there’s a will there is away!

I am bringing them back and really thrilled about it. They will be offered in 3 sizes- mini, med and large. Four colors- blk/ivory, blue/ivory, orange/ivory and ivory/gold!! With luck they will be mid to late April.

‘These above were the first round of samples, a bit of tweaking was required so the new molds are done and ready to be painted. With luck these will be here in May.

Porcelains The next porcelain presale will start tomorrow and run through Saturday (two and a half days). This is a big shipment coming in April and this is a presale you do not want to miss! A few of the fabulous pieces that will be offered…..

Tuliperes! BEYOND excited about this and wanted to be sure it was a go before I contacted you. So many contact me about these on a very regular basis, and I finally after a very, very long pursuit of finding a capable manufacturer found them and the molds are almost out of production!!! Need your opinion as I decide on colorways, obviously the blue and white is a given but what about solids?

So very excited, these will be coming with luck in  mid to late May, just  in time for spring/summer entertaining! The minimums quantities were high, so the good news there will be plenty to go around. Doing a large 22″ and a med 14″. Cannot wait!!! I will show you pictures once they are in the painting stages. But here is an idea of what they will look like-

Ornaments. As crazy as it may seem, I am awaiting my samples back fro the Holiday collection 2017. We will bring back the most popular ones, many of the balls, all the jars, pagodas and foo dogs.

There are going to be a few design changes to some and some will be offered in 2 sizes. The concentration will be on the blue and white collection however we will offer the colored version as well as those ended up doing quite well. Stay tuned….

Silver- A new shipment is coming in within about 2 weeks, which will include a few favorite sold out gorgeous planters, new chargers, a beautiful new pitcher and the most stunning large covered dome platter plus the charming acorn and equestrian mint juleps, along with the plain beaded version. Here is a look of some quick pictures taken-

Two new chargers-

Planters-

New gorgeous pitcher-

Can’t wait to get this fabulous covered dome platter-

Mint juleps-

Chinoiserie Tole- A new shipment will also arrive in April with new designs including some exquisite new lamps (bringing in more black/gold since those seem to be the first to sell out along with blue/white) and introducing theses gorgeous obelisks, still being painted but you get the idea below. New lamp styles and colorways as well as the extra large and large bamboo lanterns will be back.

Plus bringing back the sold out very popular Provence planters just in time for spring!

A new style lamp in the works-

Provence Planters anyone?

Ideas that are percolating……

An exclusive Enchanted Home melamine dinnerware line! This is very early but I am waiting on a few samples and fingers crossed I will love them. It is quite a process and involves a designer helping translate my vision onto plates….again where there is a will there is a way. I do love the melamine plates I carry but they are from a rather unreliable vendor and it’s been very frustrating at times getting orders and my own bulk orders fulfilled. So this is something I am very interested in doing….

There is one other idea still in the conception phase so I am not quite ready to talk about it…but can assure it is something you will love an something I personally feel is missing out there.

My goal from the start still remains- to bring items to you that are either harder to find, or are prohibitively expensive for a more affordable cost that most can afford. I love traditional accessories and believe they will stand the test of time. Some I do with a twist to have them feel a bit more modern but they are classics, my favorite style.

I am offering a giveaway to thank you for your loyalty and support and hoping you will vote for me too:)

THE GIVEAWAY-

One lucky winner will win this beautiful three tiered silver dish, perfect for display or serving. All you need to do to be eligible is visit my online shop (click here) and come back and tell us a favorite item or two. That’s it…a winner will be announced on Sunday.

Lots of going of exciting things happening. Thanks for stopping in, wishing you a wonderful day and always appreciate your visits. Part of the fun of doing what I do, is getting to share with you every step of the way. Wishing you a fabulous day, until tomorrow…..

Seven on Sunday

Good Sunday morning to you…winter is back with a vengeance!  We had snow the other day and now bracing for a NOR’EASTER on Tues. I seriously cannot believe they are calling for up to 22″ and spring is just days away! A bummer as it will likely hinder a fun plan I  had on tap for that day. Oh well…time to announce the winner of the tole planter. Congratulations goes to-

#139 SUSAN K.

Please contact me at theenchantedhome@gmail.com to provide your shipping address and color choice so this planter can be on it’s merry way.

1 A FEW RECENT FAVORITE MOOD BOARDS. I love playing with online design boards and a big part of my edesign is showing my clients what things might look like together either in a newly designed space or existing space a HUGE perk of edesign as you just cannot do this in person.

Even when I am coming up with ideas for an event or table setting, I can use these boards to get my ideas “on paper”…it is such a wonderful design tool. Here are a few recents-

The first one is inspiration for a luncheon I will be hosting, loving the pink with the white and blue….this is exactly the vision I see.

This one was for a client interested in my line of pots who  needed two for her back door. She envisioned something tall and elegant for her beautiful Georgian home and I helped those ideas come to life. She had a hard time envisioning what the two she was considering  might look with the trees,  so I showed her!

I took two topiary pictures, added the planters, threw in some pretty white flowers and voila!!

ADD

AND GET THIS-

And this was done for a past client who has a small sitting room that is part of her living room, she said its a cozy spot with big windows, she wanted it to feel sophisticated and a little transitional to work with the reset of their beautiful Boston apartment. Think we nailed it…..the gorgeous rich velvets she has fallen in love with for pillows but torn about the color choice..do you have a fave? I am leaning towards one but thought it would be fun to see what you think-

2 A FEW FAVORITE DOCUMENTARIES. So by now you probably know I love documentaries, I could watch them all day long (and yesterday actually did)!  A few I watched recently that I thought were really interesting and worth sharing below.

This one I have seen before but I could watch it over and over, it’s all about the rarefied world of truffles, and truffle hunting…totally fascinating

Love beautiful old homes and castles and always find myself daydreaming about what went on inside those walls. This was a really interesting and so beautiful documentary  on The Secrets of Chatsworth. (on Netflix)

This is an all time favorite……a truly fascinating and heartbreaking tale of an incredible art collector and how a corrupt city literally stole it from under his feet, it was despicable to see what Philadelphia did to this visionaries collection that he had always intended to  keep private and accessible for all to see.

Greed is a very ugly thing, I get mad every time I see it. Have seen this at least 10 times and eventually bought the DVD, it never gets old, so compelling!

3. YOGURT TEST RESULTS. So since we have adopted a healthier lifestyle, that means a pretty radical change in how we snack. I have taken to yogurt for a quick snack that is both healthy and tasty.

I love Greek yogurt…so went on a taste test and tried several over the last few weeks. I have a few favorites, all are low calorie but the irony is the lowest in sugar (very important) is my favorite! I could close my eyes and almost feel like I am eating ice cream, its that rich and yummy! Plus I love adding Grapenuts to it for the crunch and extra flavor, and it basically adds almost no calories.

Interesting article (click here) on the good and the bad yogurts….

4. INSTAGRAMS OF INTEREST. Lots of beauty to share this week, some gorgeous homes included. Always have fun gathering ideas for this weeks roundup!

My favorite this week is this because I am simply FLOORED that this picture is not of fresh flowers but the most delicate sugar flowers for a wedding cake, that only cake master Maggie Austin can make, astounding!! She just out with a new book which I am definitely getting.

5.  LAKE COMO DREAMING!  OK this has me totally under Lake Como’s spell and now this has shot up as the top spot for (gingers crossed) maybe one of my own sons weddings.

These pictures literally took my breath away..cannot imagine a dreamier wedding spot. Maybe you are in the wedding planning mode, just an idea:) Click here for the website, it will take you far away to a most magical place, I promise (click on gallery)

(All photos by Marcus Bell)

6 A LITTLE TASTE OF FRANCE DELIVERED RIGHT TO MY DOOR! I was excited to learn about Sharon Santon’is brilliant idea of a gift box subscription featuring items straight from her homeland, France. I mean come on..who doesn’t just love anything from France?

I eagerly awaited its arrival and voila, it came! It is such a beautiful box in person, I swear I smelled the heavenly scents even before I even unwrapped the beautiful packaging. Click here to learn more about this wonderful French box and how you can get yours, you will be happy you did:)

What a delight it was to open and find so many exquisite goodies, some I already put to good use. Here is what I received-

An incredible candle with the chic matchbox ever plus a gorgeous set of giftcards by talented Jeannie of I Dream of!

Beautiful books that looks like watercolor paintings with pencils, a beautiful porcelain mug and three antique wine glasses that double as small bud vases

Some of the most heavenly soaps I have ever smelled!

Loved the brochure explaining the origins and story behind each product, made me have a whole new appreciation for each and every item, sent with love from France:)

Click here to learn more about this wonderful “France in a box” and how you can get yours, you will be happy you did:) Best gift to give yourself!

7 SUNDAY’S SURVEY. This I will be interested to see the results on…..fashion. Totally subjective of course and certainly there is no right or wrong. But I was watching a small snippet of a fashion show and my husband who was there remarked “who buy those things, they are terrible” Now full disclosure- he is no fashionista and thought when he switched to wearing flat front corduroys that he was really pushing the fashion envelope:) But I had to agree,  it was pretty bad but made for a theatrical show.

That night going through Instagram, a well known designer posted about the International Women’s Day and featured a “fashionista” (I am being kind). I literally thought it was first a joke then clicked on her name because curiosity is my middle name and sure enough she has quite a  following and has decided to turn her son into a budding fashoinisto himself. Here are the pictures to support my case-

This is the featured picture that caught my attention….If I walked out in public in blue fluffy slippers my entire family would have me committed within hours!

And these are taken straight from the “fashion icons” instagram

Mother and son are featured together in many of the pictures, obviously they have a great relationship which is the silver lining here. I promise, I am not here to make fun of anyone, but really am just curious and this was a great example to support my question….am I just not “getting it”?

Is fashion more about theatrics than actually looking good or beautiful now? I can’t imagine we will look back on these looks 50 years from now and consider them iconic the way we look back on pictures of Princess Caroline, Jackie O, Audrey Hepburn etc….and still are in awe of their elegant looks.

Is this the new norm with fashion? If it is, then I have never been so happy to call myself unfashionable lol. OK your turn to weigh in……

Last day today to take advantage of the gorgeous raffia bags, sold out of most but getting more in on Tuesday,  click here to see

TODAY is the last day to accept your pictures for the Enchanted Home Love contest, have room for a couple more. Send in 1-2 pictures featuring an item purchased through The Enchanted Home, and win 3 months of Enchanted Home Goodies! Click here for more info or send in your pictures to theenchantedhome@gmail.com (put contest on subject line)

Thank you as always for stopping by. The incredible presale on the newest porcelain container arriving mid April will happen some time this coming week….so many exciting new pieces! Enjoy your day and stay warm:)

The Diet Diaries- Chapter 1

Good Saturday morning from very very cold arctic New York. How do we go from a balmy 60 degrees on Wednesday to 12 degrees today with snow yesterday and a significant snow storm headed this way on Tues? INSANE. I am not looking to give an extension for winter, I have my gardening gloves ready and just waiting to fling open my windows!

Hope wherever you are…it’s a lot warmer. Moving along, today is the start of a new series. Much like the Buff Diaries, this is the Diet Diaries, and admittedly not nearly as much fun or pretty:) We have adopted a healthier way of eating, so I don’t even like to say we are on a “diet” as much as we are changing to way we look at food. There, sounds better already:)

Its been about 3-4 weeks and I definitely feel much better. It was hard to say goodbye to certain foods that frankly I ate with abandon, but I am pretty good recreating the ordinary and have started to getting fairly creative with coming up with some pretty good meals, plus there are more choices than ever to be able to create a healthy lifestyle.

So I am really hoping that we can do this maybe once a month or so , and get a dialog going. I hope to be able to share my ideas with you but really hope in return, you too will share yours. Diet and “watching it”; are three words most people know about, and with the warmer weather headed this way…….I think it’s on a lot of peoples minds now. So here are some of my own ideas, observations, successes-

Today focusing on what we can grab and go the essentials to get me through a day, next time we will focus on things I am making at home, with a few recipes and the “E” word, exercise:)

__________________

DRINK WATER.  I have never drank as much waster as I have the last month. In general I drink a fair amount, but I have dramatically cut back on diet soda (now most days I have none and every few days will have one) so I replace all of that with water, water and water.  Now soda seems so sweet, but every now and now it does hit the spot!

I love Pellegrino and Poland Spring, that is really all I drink. Also love the sparkling Raspberry Lime flavor. I also love a big extra large cup filled with ice and lemon slices and fill it with water and drink it all day and refill as necessary.

BREAKFAST. I am not a big breakfast person, never have been. Most mornings I am rushing to get out the door, once or twice a week I will make myself an egg white omelette with baby spinach, tomatoes and one low fat string cheese cut up. I will add two pieces of the low cal 40 cal whole wheat bread and it is quite a satisfying meal. Most mornings however I have a yogurt and a piece of fruit or a low calorie cereal/protein bar.

The Think Thin bar is quite good and very satisfying, recommended often by various vigilant health nuts who have devoted their life to healthy eating.

Instead of a second or third cup of coffee, I have a few cups of lemon ginger tea throughout the day. Its quite tasty and has great benefits.

SNACKS. If I need a snack, a piece of fruit, a 90 cal string cheese, a small bag of unsalted almonds normally does the trick. I don’t do a lot of snacking while we are watching it as that is my pitfall, I could LIVE on snacks.  But there are times you just need to eat to fill a craving for something to munch on, so choose wisely and make sure they are not empty calories that will make you feel even hungrier a few minutes later.

INDULGENCE. When I feel like I need to feel like I am being bad, I must say there are several indulgent treats on the market that are low calorie, low sugar, some high protein and really tasty. They will make you feel Ike you are having “the real thing” but at 90-120 calories, you walk away with zero guilt.

Spoke of these the other day, they are good!! Very high in protein, low sugar.

YOGURT. I love yogurt and did a sort of taste test the last two weeks, I experimented with about 5 different yogurts, peach is my favorite flavor and Greek yogurt in my eyes is the best. After trying about 5 yogurts, here are my top two faves so far, still experimenting and open to suggestions but must say these are darn good-

The Oikos is very high in protein, lowest in sugar and super tasty

This one is also very tasty not as rich feeling but yummy

MY SECRET TO A LOW FAT PARFAIT.  I add some blueberries and then  add a few tablespoons of Grapenuts, YES Grapenuts and it is soo good! A low fat yogurt parfait that is every bit as good as any other. Trust me:)

Also have Grapenuts for breakfast, with no fat milk and berries or bananas, and it is actually quite good.

SALADS. OK this is the mainstay of what I eat. I have some variation of a salad almost without fail every day for lunch, and for dinner it’s often a piece of fish a big salad with protein and on occasion cereal with fruit.

We have a lot of places around here with every kind of salad you can imagine so it’s easy to pickup when I am work. The market now carries so many prepackaged salads too, many that are quite good and it’s so easy.

I always use about half the dressing and sometimes add nuts or a avocado, you can in other words embellish these, I like crunch and texture in my salads

This is so convenient to make a really quick stir fry with small pieces of cut up chicken or shrimp-

I will share with you next time some salads I am  making at home with low calorie dressings that you might like or want to try. We did not talk about exercise and obviously this is a key component here, one which I am not very good at but with spring around the corner I expect that to improve. We will talk about that next time, and I look forward to talking about that next time.

Every time I do these posts I will pose a question, so this weeks question is-

How do you handle watching your diet when out to eat in a restaurant?

For me, it’s of course skipping over the bared, I instantly think “shorts season” and it is a instant motivator to steer clear. I stick to salads, fish and chicken of some sort. A restaurant is a place to be able to enjoy something you might not take the time to make at home, and small things  like saying light or no salt, dressing on the side, sauce on the side, etc…it all adds up. OK your turn to talk and I cannot wait to hear what you have to say on the matter.
