By Invitation Only…"A challenge"

Good morning from snowy NY!!!! I am officially over the snow, and we are due to get ANOTHER snow storm tonight and yet one more on Sunday. I cannot stand it anymore! Moving onto more pleasant subjects……. is our monthly By Invitation Only post and this months theme really made me pause and think. The theme is challenge and we are to talk about a challenge, big or small that we are facing.

I have a few this year, all I am confident I will conquer but they are challenges nonetheless. I could have talked about the challenge of needing to lose 20 pounds! But then devoting an entire post to it makes it official and it also means I need to do something about that right this minute and I have the Superbowl and all the yummy foods that go with it to contend with and there is NO WAY I am missing out on that:) . I need to “get in the zone” to do that, the good news is I am nearly there. And when I get in the zone, there is no stopping me!

No the challenge I instead? am going to talk about for all the world to see and hear is the challenge that is looming above me like a huge black menacing cloud…that of becoming a, I even hate to utter the word………… an empty nester. There. I said it. I cannot stand to think I will be one of them. Just saying it practically makes me break out in tears. This is coming from me, the one who cries over every Johnson and Johnson’s, Disney and even the newest iPhone commercial….show me a wobbling toddler with thunder thighs and you are guaranteed a storm of tears! Here’s the deal…….

I have spent the last 26 years of my life totally devoted to my three kids. Yes, I definitely did not deprive myself of doing things for me too, I dabbled in things for myself all the while, design, hobbies, tennis, social outings, everything I wanted to do but the truth is the epicenter of my universe (and still is) was always my kids. So this year, 2014 is going to be a really tough year, a very challenging year. At not even 50 I feel too young for this to be happening. So indeed there are positives and negatives about staring young! (take note people)

And so the cycle goes…we start out just the two of us
?

And soon, our family grows and there we are? pushing the symbolic carriage while the other(s) trail close behind on a tricycle or bike with training wheels…..

Then we expand, growing into an even bigger family….

And how did that happen! Soon they are all grown up, towering over us……

And then we are down to two yet again……

But eventually, the silver lining is? we will be a big family again,? a slightly different variation as this time it will be an , extended family with daughter in laws, eventually God willing grandchildren and again we grow….

My oldest is about to close on an apt in NYC and move off on his own (once they go that’s it I am well aware). My middle son has plans to move to California by the summer and so far it looks like its full speed ahead. My ‘baby” is heading to college in Sept. And there’s certainly no stopping that! It almost seems cruel that within a 6 month span, all three will be flocking the nest! I can just about deal with one…but two and then three? It is almost too much.

I think one of the biggest challenges to me is that this means this “chapter” of my life is coming to an end and an entirely new one is about to open. I do not like change, don’t do well with it. Always end up adjusting and we all know sometimes change can be an awesome thing but that “in between” bridge really freaks me out.

?A metaphor for me would be crossing from solid secure beautiful ground filled with an endless field of perky flowers (life with my kids at home)? and then having to cross over a long rickety, perilous bridge looming high above roaring waters ready to suck me in (the transition period), until I get to the other side, another plot of stable secure land albeit a different landscape (the “new” empty nester life)!!

I will miss the “having to drive them”, the continuous requests for their favorite meal, the begging of preparing a very late night snack (normally mac and cheese), the cries for an ironed shirt when they are quickly getting ready for a dance, it’s always ” mom to the rescue”! I will miss being needed and wanted on a day to day basis and think I secretly coveted doing a job that only I could do:)? Now they are all grown up and ready to assert themselves by taking on these small, seemingly insignificant tasks on their own and it is time for me to slowly step back and allow them to flourish and learn and become independent.

But I know they know I will always be here for them.? Unconditionally. So…….I know I have company out there!! PLEASE tell me,? for all you veteran empty nesters, how you have coped with that transition period that I inevitably know we must all face. Any secrets of the tomb? Please share….I can use all the help and advice I can get:)

I know as with the hands of time that there is no turning back. Getting to see my kids grow, spread their wings and head out into the world equipped with the blessing of an education and eager, idealistic eyes is a privilege that not all get to see. So for this gift I am thankful and will remember that those cherubic, silky smooth, pudgy little hands will always,? no matter how far? they go be a part of me, and me a part of them………….

Thanks for reading about my personal challenge. If you want to hear about more others? challenges from the group of talented bloggers, please click here to the brainchild’s blog, Splenderosa where there are links to visit all the other participants.

By Invitation Only……..Christmas Cocktails!!

Hi there! So excited to be here for our last By Invitation Only post for 2013…….hard to believe! Where did the time go? 2013 has been an amazing year and I am so fortunate to have been included with such a talented and inspiring group of women/fellow bloggers. It has been fun coming up with our own take? on various themes this year……..and I so enjoy seeing what everyone else comes up with too!

The theme this month is both a festive and fun one, Christmas cocktails…..and I had a ball putting it together. Especially since I was originally planning on throwing a real live shindig but alas it was not meant to happen, however am hoping to do a post holiday bash in January. So I had fun living vicariously? through this party and best part of all…you are all invited!

Ready for me to open the door so you can come on in and get this party started?

My invitation might look something like this…..

And as your festive hostess, this is what I will be wearing…..

This gorgeous red lace dress (my Christmas wish came true early…I can eat all I want forever and ever and never gain a pound, hence how I will fit into this dress)!

And of course to show my spirit….gotta add a little green!

And can’t decide which of these beauties to include, maybe both!

A little gold polishes it off!

And when the party is in full swing, and no one is looking I will change into these (hey at least they are festive)!

Come on in…….

?The first thing that greets you will be the Christmas tree in the foyer…but it’s not the last one you will see!

You will hear all of your favorite holiday tunes being sung by real live Christmas carolers all dressed up in their holiday finest!

You are then handed a glass of champagne to start the celebrating!

?And as you stroll throughout the house with the hum of the carolers singing their tunes, you see that in every room, Christmas had indeed arrived. I have tables set up all over the house as “food stations” so that people will walk and mingle…..

?Festive touches are everywhere…….

Every space has been decorated to the nines in its Christmas finest!
?The breakfast is cheery and festive too….
?And of course I didn’t forget about decorating the kitchen!!!!
?I have great big bowls of holiday apples and evergreen..

?Paperwhites will be all over….permeating my home with their intoxicating scent

A local master baker has created this incredible take on a gingerbread house as one of my centerpieces!

?And of course my trademark blue and white is all over the place….

This is a cocktail party…no formal stuffy sit down dinners. This is a casual but elegant affair with a ton of appetizers, both stationery and passed. A quick look at some of the foods that will be served…….we know it’s all about the food!!

Mini ceasar salads served in small mint julep cups

Feta and tomato crostinis

Fruits and chocolate tuxedo strawberries

Crab stuffed mushrooms

?Mini shrimp cocktail

Mini? Fish tacos and patron

?A modern and whimscial take on pigs in a blanket:)

Flank steak and avocado on a crostini…yum!

Crab ragoons

Skewered lime shrimp

And if you are like me, what you? really want to know about are? the desserts, here is just a sampling of what will be served….

A gorgeous cookie display of amazing cookies to take home!

All kinds of amazing cakes!

Donuts and milk anyone?

And these cakes do not need narration….YES they are that good!

An assortment of Ms. Prindables apples

Incredible cameo cookies

This is cruel,? I know……… to post so many delectable goodies especially when I am hungry, sorry for any binges this might create…hey, its the holidays, enjoy!

Once we are done toasting, cheering, laughing eating to our hearts delight and of course singing through it all…..I hand out these darling party favors!

And as the night wraps up….and everyone grabs their favor and bids us farewell…you will never guess who is waiting outside in the front yard to lead the way home!

By Invitation only……..fashion!

Hi there…its our monthly “BIO” posts and since everyone is so tied up getting settled into a new season, getting kids back to school, etc…..we decided to make this an easy one for all of us. Its a fun theme and one that never gets old. Fashion. We were asked to choose one outfit from a current fall collection that we just love and one that falls short and explain why. This was easy….I love fall fashion so didn’t have to look far to choose a favorite, in fact it was choosing just one that was the biggest challenge of all. But here are my two picks and why…..

Something I love. This is classic Gucci.  Where would I wear this? To a luncheon, or a business function. I would then break up the suit and wear the jacket with a pair of velvet black pants or even jeans and riding boots. The skirt could be dressed down with a chunky black sweater and tights and riding boots or dressed up with a pair of t-strap shoes and a black lacy blouse.

This really has everything I love. I love gray, love a tailored suit, the way this is a nod to “old fashioned” ladylike dressing and then there is the touch of leopard on the collar….brilliant! I love cools and warms mixed in and this is such a timeless classic.  Love the addition of the chic leather gloves and gorgeous t-strap shoes….perfection.  Thank you Gucci!

And I can see this gorgeous black Hermes crocodile kelly with it……..hey, might as well go all the way! Come to mama…….

Take a look at other looks from this collection…so chic!

Here is my don’t..I mean have you ever? What is this, a blinged out swifter? This is the most absurd pair of shoes  I have seen yet (and please if anyone has recently purchased these, forgive me).  Can you imagine walking into a school meeting with these babies on? I am having fun visualizing the looks of sheer horror that would be on my sons and husbands face if I dared to wear something like this, they would have me committed. And don’t despair, because  for close to $1000.00 they are all yours……….and just think you can keep the kitchen floor spic and span while making your very own fashion statement:)

I am all for fashion representing who you are. It is such a subjective decision to make, what you wear and how you wear it. I do not judge or at least try not to (except when it’s fun). But seriously if someone I knew wore those shoes up there, I would immediately think she is a confused woman, is conflicted by her cleaning duties but really wants to be a mythical goddess hence her bejeweled harem feeling shoes with dust mops at the ends…lol. Guess those are the ultimate “domestic goddess shoes”. Thanks for stopping in and enjoy your day.

If you would like to see more hits and misses, by all means click on over to Marsha of Splenderosa and see all the various ideas, loads of fun!

By Invitation Only….patina

Hi there! Hope everyone had a marvelous and relaxing Labor Day weekend. We got to go away and had such fun…..it was perfect despite less than perfect weather. Got back yesterday and enjoyed having the lazy rainy day to catch up!  I am still reeling from the fact that summer is over, schools all over the country are in session and get this…..the holidays are just a few months away.Yikes!

Today also marks the return to the monthly By Invitation Only posts…where a group  of bloggers ( a very talented group I might add) get together and post on a common theme. Its really fun to see all the different takes on a certain subject and wonderful to see such brilliant minds at work.

Today’s theme is Patina. Admittedly I struggled with this one a bit. I wasn’t quite sure how to approach it. The word actually means  oxidization or the changing of something/a material over time, it was originally applied to metals but now applies to virtually anything and everything. So patina is in essence, everything that happens to something over time. It is what gives the object its character.

So at the sake of being boring and predicable, I just decided to not stress myself out too much over this (plenty of other things to stress out over:) and include pictures of what I think define the word beautifully.  What do you think of when you hear the word? I hope you enjoy and as always many thanks for stopping in…….

My own picture taken at Brimfield…..this one is patina at its prettiest!

This is how patina looks at it’s prettiest! The Fuller Review

Love this picture….shows the patina process of a brand new penny to a fully oxidized one, fascinating!

A bevy of old French copper pots exemplifies the magnificent of patina at its finest……

Or worn restored french limestone flooring from an old chateau….bring the patina on!

I love an old rusted urn…….the patina here is sublime!

An old French jewlery box with a well worn patina is positively lovely

The overall patina in this fabulous French room sends my senses into overdrive 🙂

Love the copper patina on this fabulous conservatory!

Gorgeous old draper table….rustic and beautiful!

Love the aged patina found on beautiful statuary and planters….

Even found on an old pair of boots……the patina is something to admire

And I love it found on old books….exquisite!

A gorgeous pair of urns with a rusty patina, taken at Brimfield

If patina could talk…wonder what these beautiful antique pieces of flatware would tell us?

Love the look of aged patina on a beautiful urn……soooo spectacular!

A  pile of old dough bowls with their own “story” aka patina

Have you ever seen such a lovely pair of rusty gates?

And if you are love patina, then France is truly a treasure chest for every one of your senses…..

A well worn collection of books with patina…..so pretty

Adore this picture….the patina of the copper pots along with the black range and the rich rustic woods is just spectacular!

And when I think of how the word ‘patina” applies to us, I think of this picture……

It shows the “patina” on the older hand, which represents a life of experiences and journeys touching the hand of a fresh young person, whose patina has yet to start its many colors and stages……..

If you want to see more interpretations from a bevy of super talented bloggers, then click here to Marsha of Splenderosa, the brainchild of BIO……….it’s well worth the click!

Hope you enjoyed! Do you have any pieces in your own home with patina on it? Do you care for the look? I absolutely love it and think anything is made more interesting and unique with a bit of patina. Thank you for stopping by…be back tomorrow!

By Invitation Only….patina

?

Hi there! Hope everyone had a marvelous and relaxing Labor Day weekend. We got to go away and had such fun…..it was perfect despite less than perfect weather. Got back yesterday and enjoyed having the lazy rainy day to catch up!? I am still reeling from the fact that summer is over, schools all over the country are in session and get this…..the holidays are just a few months away.Yikes!

Today also marks the return to the monthly By Invitation Only posts…where a group ?of bloggers ( a very talented group I might add) get together and post on a common theme. Its really fun to see all the different takes on a certain subject and wonderful to see such brilliant minds at work.

Today’s theme is Patina. Admittedly I struggled with this one a bit. I wasn’t quite sure how to approach it. The word actually means? oxidization or the changing of something/a material over time, it was originally applied to metals but now applies to virtually anything and everything. So patina is in essence, everything that happens to something over time. It is what gives the object its character.

?So at the sake of being boring and predicable, I just decided to not stress myself out too much over this (plenty of other things to stress out over:) and include pictures of what I think define the word beautifully. ?What do you think of when you hear the word? I hope you enjoy and as always many thanks for stopping in…….

?My own picture taken at Brimfield…..this one is patina at its prettiest!

?This is how patina looks at it’s prettiest! The Fuller Review

?Love this picture….shows the patina process of a brand new penny to a fully oxidized one, fascinating!

A bevy of old French copper pots exemplifies the magnificent of patina at its finest……

?Or worn restored french limestone flooring from an old chateau….bring the patina on!

?I love an old rusted urn…….the patina here is sublime!

?An old French jewlery box with a well worn patina is positively lovely

The overall patina in this fabulous French room sends my senses into overdrive 🙂

?Love the copper patina on this fabulous conservatory!

?Gorgeous old draper table….rustic and beautiful!

?Love the aged patina found on beautiful statuary and planters….

?Even found on an old pair of boots……the patina is something to admire

?And I love it found on old books….exquisite!

?A gorgeous pair of urns with a rusty patina, taken at Brimfield

?If patina could talk…wonder what these beautiful antique pieces of flatware would tell us?

?Love the look of aged patina on a beautiful urn……soooo spectacular!

?A? pile of old dough bowls with their own “story” aka patina

?Have you ever seen such a lovely pair of rusty gates?

And if you are love patina, then France is truly a treasure chest for every one of your senses…..

?A well worn collection of books with patina…..so pretty

By Invitation Only….Camelot!

Hi there, its our monthly By Invitation Only post and this is it until the fall! (We are taking a break during the summer months since everyone will be scattered about during the summer). Marsha of Splenderosa  came up with the concept of each of us posting on Camelot. Open to interpretation…..it will be fun  to see what all the girls in the group come up with!

For me first and foremost the first image that comes to mind is of JFK and Jackie….but of course! How could it not! They signified an American Camelot, don’t you agree? So I have to start this post off with a picture of the iconic couple……..

Then I started thinking about a modern day Camelot. What does it mean? What would it look like?  Camelot, the mythical magical castle supposedly that belonged to King Arthur is still a mystery, its true location never really known. Yet the term Camelot stays so alive in our imaginations, talked about from generation to generation….a testament to how important it is for us to dream and to aspire, old and young alike.

So just roll with me here! I came up with an inside and outside look at what my own modern day Camelot might look like (in my overactive imagination)! This is what I came up with, just think a timeless classic gem, one that will stand the test of time………….where everything is beautiful and the simple pleasures are enjoyed and cherished in the most elegant way possible!

Where the long shady driveway might look like this…….

Passing the horses grazing along the way up to the house…….

The “greeting committee” at Camelot…..

Camelot…a home that befits such a name
With an elegant front porch that looks something like this….perfect for early morning coffee and watching the sun come up…..

Where canines rule, no room is off limits!

Where the rear foyer might open onto a beautiful manicured field like this…….
Where pristine and perfect gardens are everywhere you look…….
And secret gardens wait for your discovery!

A home where every room, though grand and gorgeous, has a feeling of “worn in elegance” that beckons you in…..

Where the guest rooms rival that of the finest hotels you have ever stayed in
With a bathroom and tub to match……

And where slippers like these are waiting for you to slip into….. (you’re not surprised are you)?

And where the sitting rooms, a rhapsody of blue and white invite you to linger for hours…..

And monogrammed everything is de rigeur ….

Where all the foods for the daily meals are centered around what’s picked from the garden that morning..rest assured it’s delicious!

Breathtaking views can be expected from every window over at Camelot!
Even that of the porte cochere which houses a collection of fabulous vintage roadsters….

Camelot, a place where time really does stand still, long enough to sit down and write an old fashioned thank you note (no texting or emailing a thank you allowed)!

A grand drawing room where everyone gathers after dinner for a little nightcap

And smaller intimate spaces that beg you to get cozy in with a great book…..

A ballroom sized kitchen that can accommodate prepping for parties for hundreds and hundreds…..

A dining room that can handle heads  of state, heated family debates and lengthy formal dinners of all kinds…….

Camelot…a place with more than one reading room….for all those books you have nothing but time to devour!

Where closets are the stuff girly girl dreams are made of!

Meals are always a white tablecloth, silver charger, and fancy linens affair…….

Where daily crisp white linens are changed on the bed and finished with a spritz of lavender spray

And where urns of beautiful flowers and plants are changed weekly…….

A place where picnics are  commonplace

And when you aren’t going on a picnic you might ride for acres and acres on your own mare or stallion

And when you come back, look what might be waiting for you…a chilled mint julep in a monogrammed cup!

Camelot, a home where legendary Christmas’s are right  out of a storybook…….
And where the drawing room can be converted to a beautiful ballroom for a family wedding

Where a gorgeous little gazebo at the waters edge holds your personal small boat for when you want to jaunt”across the lake” to catch a drink or late day coffee with a friend…….
Holding your chinoiserie umbrella of course! (and yes this includes the glass of Bordeaux you see there)!!

Well as they say if you are going to dream you  might as well dream B I G, right? One can dream! I always say I was born in the wrong era, society moves too fast for me today, I want it to slow dooooooown. WAY down. This modern day Camelot certainly would be quite a fantasy as life is so fast paced today, I find it is harder to take the time to really enjoy the simple pleasures in life. I think Camelot is a vision and a concept of magical perfection more than anything else, very much alive  in our imaginations that has been revered and celebrated for centuries.

True, this doesn’t apply to 99.9% of us, but I think we can all have our own little Camelots…..by making our own homes places we love to live in, share with others and fill with love. We can all buy fresh flowers, light beautiful candles, play beautiful music…..all the pretty little touches that can bring a little “Camelot” into our lives, what do you think? How do you see your personal Camelot?

If you want to see more interpretations of Camelot and I can assure you there will be many worth seeing, click here to visit the very talented, fearless leader of BIO, Marsha of Splenderosa…where there are links to all the other bloggers who have participated.
