Can we talk?

Hi there…..haven’t done one of these in a long time! My weekend started off really busy? but? sadly hurt my knee again so had to miss my nieces graduation party, I was so upset as being in bed with a huge pack of ice, it was not the Sat. night I envisioned! But the rest and icing has paid off and I am feeling better today, but will be proceeding with extreme caution!? With a prom, graduation, sports dinner, and my sons graduation party, needless to say this is a busy week and I need to be in top form.? I was lucky to find some older drafts that had never gotten published to? help me see me through this busy week. I also have a Steals and Deals I am putting the finishing touches on that is not to be missed (hopefully tomorrow)!

One thing I am looking for is a new fragrance. Are you an “experimenter” or do you have your own “signature fragrance”? I like having that comfortable “go to” to rely on, the one that I know works well with my body chemistry, tried and true. My preference for 95% of the time is a light powdery fragrance. I love the smell of a freshly bathed baby….ahhh smells so good! That explains one of my choices below. So….I am all ears if you have a favorite scent, that would be considered light and musky/powder, please please please tell me about it.

We have a darling little store not far that carries all these really neat brands and a friend of mine had bought this amazing musk parfum for me there, I loved it so much that I kept buying it, I loved that it wasn’t available in many places so you can imagine my sadness when I waltzed in there to stock up and was told they had one bottle left and the company had closed!!!!! So not fair!!! I googled it and found two bottles of it and have not found it since:) Nothing has come close so here I am again looking…and hoping you might help.

This list of fragrances that worked well for me is kind of all over the map, J Low and Chanel hardly belong in the same sentence but they both smelled so good on me! I got compliments all the time. LOVE Harijuku Baby but it doesn’t seem to last as long as I would like, have had Cashmere Mist for a long time and Daisy is a newer purchase but I don’t love it. Jo Malone has the staying power that I want but somehow they smell very strong on me. Let’s just say you can smell me coming way before I enter the room:)? Chanel 5 is a classic and here to stay but a bit strong for me for everyday. So here is where you come in…I need your advice/input/suggestions!!

Come on…..talk to me. Tell me what you love to wear and if any of them are soft and powdery,? light and musky. Fingers crossed you might come up with my new signature fragrance. Thanks for stopping in! Be back tomorrow to announce the winner of the beautiful gloves from Angela’s Garden. If you didn’t add your name to the hat, click here. Have a wonderful day and start to your week.

Can we talk? Hair products!

Good Thursday morning to you! Wow this week is flying..cannot believe Labor day is upon us, any big plans for your weekend?  First,  I just have to say I am have THE most amazing readers. Seriously…….I  was so moved as I read over each and ever one of the 91 (at last count)  comments on my ” Why fall makes me sometimes cry” post and between that and the many emails, I was so comforted to know I am not alone.  If you didn’t see it, hope you might take a look here. Thank you thank you thank you!

Life changes, and I do know that childhood doesn’t last forever and there is plenty of happiness to be found and shared when our young kids begin the metamorphosis into young adults but it is not without some sadness (and a few tears)  and nostalgia that this happens particularly for someone who enjoyed the journey of motherhood as much as I did:) But yes, there are I am quite sure,  lots of happy times ahead and I cannot wait…bring it on:)

Moving along…..today lets talk hair! My hair has changed over the years and as summer turns to fall it changes yet again. But for the first time in my life, I have found a battalion of hair products that I can say I  am madly in love with and simply cannot live without. So much so that I need to share them with you! And of course part of the fun with these “Can we talk” posts is hearing what you have to say on the matter, so do not hold back…tell us all about your favorite hair products,  any tips or insider secrets to great hair. I think we can all agree, we are just a wee bit happier when our hair looks good!

Lets get started……..

Left to right top row…

1. KMS flatout, great anti humidity spray that does not leave your hair heavy at all, once this goes on its ready for battle even on the most humid summer nights!

2. This product, the Kerastase mask,  first off smells sooo good, every time I use it I want to take a bite:) It is a very rich super nourishing leave on mask (I try to leave it on for a good 15 minutes), it leaves my hair super soft and smelling amazing, I use it about 1-2 times a month

3. Unite 7 seconds, one of the best products ever! I love this stuff, its a detangler and makes combing/brushing through my hair a breeze. I swear there some kind of magic potion in there, with amazing powers. I no longer dread having to comb through my wet hair after a shower, also fantastic for the beach.

4. Neutrogena triple moisture is my “every day” conditioner, I use it about every 2-3 days, a little goes a long way. I use about a dollop about the size of a half dollar  and work it into my hair. It is consistently rated as one of the best hair bargains out there and is under $10.00!

5. LOVE this shampoo, Clear scalp and hair therapy. It is literally the best one I have used period, on both on the high and low end. It smells great, works into a salon-esque lather and leaves my hair squeaky clean. I am a fan for life and this is now the only shampoo I buy.

6. This little brush saved my life 🙂 The original wet brush is simply A M A Z I N G! OK, I am being a bit dramatic, but seriously I have ridiculously super sensitive scalp, I still cry when my hair is brushed too hard. This brush actually makes me want to brush my hair. I don’t know if the bristles are magic or what..but this brush rocks! I have three to be sure I always have one on hand, used for wet and dry hair…its AMAZING!!!! Click here to buy it and be taken to their website.

The Clear shampoo and Neutrogena conditioner/mask can be purchased at any pharmacy. I get the Unite 7, Kerastase  and KMS on Amazon.

So there you go..those are my top 6 hair picks. I am a fan for life of these six amazing products…now its your turn? Your turn to spill the beans on what makes your hair happy:) Thanks as always for stopping in to see what’s new and wishing you a fabulous day.

Can we talk?

Hi there! Sorry been “MIA” the last few days, have relatives in town and have been busy busy busy! One of these “Can we talk” posts is long overdue. Love when we get to “chat” about various things as part of the fun is bouncing ideas off of one another. Now don’t get mad at me, but I get very excited for fall shopping. And honestly since we are now on day 6 with an unbearable heat wave, fall isn’t sounding so bad right now:) How about you?

I love cool mornings when I can slip on a toasty sweater, a cute vest, and get to wear a beautiful pair of riding boots. I have a bit of a “uniform” for day to day that involves layers, almost always a scarf, plenty of cashmere (some sweaters I have had for over 12 years), and a bit of gold jewelry, and of course….always a great bag!!

So…my question is what are your fall staples? What do you tend to buy at the start of the season? A great coat? Build on your sweater collection? Are you more of an accessories girl? Or all the above (if so we are destined to become fast friends) lol. I like building over time but get very excited over fall fashions…here are some of my staples. Then its your turn to talk!

Left to right, top to bottom…

1. Gotta have a great bag, true a Bottega means coughing up the bucks but honestly any expensive bag I have ever bought has more than paid for itself in the years of mileage. Good beautiful bags do not go out of fashion ( I do not buy expensive trendy bags for that very reason) but do believe in investing in a good black bag, dark brown and maybe a blue of some sort.

2.A beautiful pair of boots. I love boots. I really love riding boots as they are comfortable and look beautiful with jeans as well as a skirt and tights. I like a tall riding boot like this one….

3. A great vest……check! Love Barbour and own a few of their vests and coats, lightweight but warm, very chic and very English. A vest is a great layering piece pure and simple, a very timeless look!

4.A beautiful cashmere scarf. I own dozens of scarves, both for winter and summer. For winter I have gray, black, dark brown and oatmeal. I find those four colors alone get me through almost every outfit. Another very good investment. Love the tissue weight because they wrap around the neck beautifully without feeling cumbersome. Stay tuned…..I am going to be carrying a wonderful line of them come fall!

5. A bit of gold jewelry. I like a chunky gold watch, maybe a simple pair of gold hoops or studs and maybe a pretty gold link bracelet. The less is more principle works here.

6. A good fitting pair of jeans. I am admittedly at the age where I feel like jeans are more a no than a yes (speaking for myself) however a good fitting pair of straight jeans, not super skinny ones because I feel those are more for younger girls, can do wonders in terms of their slimming effect and they look super chic with a pair of riding boots!

7. I am a cashmere sweater hound. I have owned some of my sweaters for over 10 years! The basic cable knit and turtlenecks do not ever go out of style. I buy mostly neutrals but every now and then will go for a fun color like a red or loden green. Once again a great staple. Every year I buy a few more to add to my sweater collection.

So there you have it a few of my staples. Now it’s your turn to talk! What are your fall staples and what will be making its way into your closet this fall? Thanks for stopping in, have a fabulous Friday and great weekend!

Can we talk? Beauty products- high and low!

Happy Thursday to you! Hope you are having a great week so far, the weather here has been incredible! I was in Greenwich yesterday and it was amazing to be outside enjoying the gorgeous weather (and town). Thank you sooo much for your incredible input for the pillow quandary yesterday. I have managed to narrow it down to 6 I like (hey that’s progress) so think I am going to order a number of them and “play”. There are other areas I will be able to use the pillows I don’t use for the loggia and they are all (except a few) so reasonable so it’s a no lose situation. Many thanks for weighing in.  Click here if you missed the post and need a serious dose of blue and white! Moving off topic now…….

OK today is a subject I think we can all offer our 2 cents on. Makeup and beauty products. We all have them, some of us just a wee bit and others have drawers full! I have learned over the years both through trial and error, and advice from those “in the know” that there really are some fabulous makeup and beauty products out there that come right from none other than your local drugstore. Then there is the Sephora variety (my fave), it truly is a candy store for ladies……it would be sooooo easy to stay in there for hours, trying away! So much to choose from, so much to spend your money on!

I for one, am a “tryer” and your classic impulse buyer, I see something I want and I buy it. Period. Most of the time I like what I buy but on occasion certain things let me down. I feel less guilty when buying something for 5 or 10 dollars from the drugstore, if the lipstick isn’t the right color….no sweat. But I am also very loyal, I have used MAC lipstick for about 8 years and have not swayed, what I like I continue to use and stay loyal to. Do you?

So over the years I have found some products that are definitely keepers in my makeup arsenal, things I buy over and over because they are just so good. Then there are those unexpected inexpensive discoveries that are equally exciting! We all know the thrill of a deal! Thought this could make a fun post…the highs and lows of beauty products and makeup.  Here are some of mine as well as the low down on why I love them…hope you will share yours!

1st row left to right….

1. Low- Milani eye pencils, come in a variety of colors, they go on smoothly,  last and best part….. are about 5.00!

2.High-Nars highlight stick…have been buying this product for years, awesome over cheekbones, lips, browbone and on occasion even on your shoulders. I buy it in South Beach and Copacabana. A great multi use stick….it lasts!

3.High- Unite 7 seconds leave in conditioner. Best hair product (leave in) that I have ever used. I have thick hair that tangles easily, this makes combing through a total breeze, there is definitely a “miracle” ingredient, will buy this over and over! It’s about 35.00 but last about 3 months.

4. Low- I have used a lot of heavy conditioners, and this one is my fave. From Neutrogena about 8.00, far better than Moroccan Oil at quadruple the price! Some hair expert was on Good Morning America one morning and was going on and on about this, well he’s right! A little goes a long way, leaves my hair feeling nourished and silky. Have used it for years.

Second row-

5. High- Stila illuminating foundation. Again a little oes a long way, I use it only on certain areas of my face, it has a slight illuminator which  makes my skin look like it’s glowing. I love this product and have used it a long time and will continue to be a devoted fan. Not heavy…..

6. Low- Milani lipliners- I have bought these for years. Love this lipliner!! Its only about 6.00 and is probably the best one I have used. I buy them in 2’s and 3’s. Awesome! Great colors too……

7. Low-Maybelline turbo mascara. I have used expensive ones (used to use Diorshow for years) but this one is as good and for only about 8.00 a tube, its a bargain. Goes on easily and allows to layer without clumping.

8. Low- Clear Scalp shampoo. This is funny….my local CVS had a promotion that if you spent over $50.00 you got this shampoo. I had never heard of it but am never one to turn down a freebie! Well…..I used it and loved it, it lathers up like salon shampoos, smells great and with each shampoo I realized how great it was. I have not been loyally using this shampoo for about 3 months ever since I discovered it. It is excellent and I highly recommend it!

Last row-

9.Low- Essie nail polish, forget the crayon box of colors on steroids (every color under the sun), this is great quality nail polish for under 10.00. There is a reason virtually all nail salons use it!

10. Low- L’Oreal’s  Glam bronze.  I use this and Geurlain’s bronzer (which I have used for years) however I think Guerlain has switched the formula, its much softer and it is cracking well before I have used it and then I have to throw away a $45.00 bronzer! That does not make me happy. I  had read in In Style about L’Oreal’s  and have since used it and been quite happy!

11. High- Bobbi Brown eyeshadow. Great quality stuff here, the color goes on with one swipe and it lasts. Does not flake and stays put. I have even dropped it and it didn’t crack. That is saying something. Not cheap but totally worth every penny. I have had these compacts for a long time and they are still going strong!

OK so that is some of what I have used and absolutely love! It’s your turn…time to tell me your favorite high and lows!! I cannot wait to hear……wishing you a fabulous day and thank you as always for stopping in!

Can we talk design books?

Hello and happy Thursday to you! I hope you got to see my post over at Chic Coastal Living about my beach house, if not click here. Its worth seeing, moving on……. I love design books. I seem to have adopted the notion that you can never have enough. I have them in stacks all over my home. They are in my bedroom, living room, family room, kitchen and heck even in some bathrooms! I just love them and when I come across a really good one it becomes a “go to” reference.?

?

Let’s say I need new inspiration for how to style a table or console, or want to get window treatment ideas, whatever the case may be there are certainly those books that deliver over and over. I had to think about choosing my favorites because there are just so many good ones, but when I thought about the books I tend to revisit often, there were definite standouts. How about you? Do you too collect them? I would love to know your favorites!! Here are some of mine…..

?

?

There are more…but these are wonderful standbys. Most I have had for years but with their timeless elegance that they have in common, they are never outdated and always feel like I am visitng “an old friend” when I open them up again. Filled with so many exquisite details, its like I am looking at them with a fresh set of eyes every time I open them! Now its your turn…tell me some of your favorite design books. There is always space for just one more book on my shelves so I am dying to know your faves…….enjoy your day!

Can we talk diets?

First off…my heart and prayers go out to the people of Boston and all those affected by this senseless tragedy. It is a painful reminder of how vulnerable we are still are as a country.? To anyone directly affected by the events in Boston yesterday, I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers and send my wishes for a world at peace.
OK this is bound to generate a lot of talk. Diets. Ugh..I know I know that dreaded “d” word. Too many of us know it. Well….mine has officially begun. I have a goal to lose ultimately about 25 pounds, but am saying 20 for now (sounds realistic). Been on a diet for about 4 weeks, lost about 7-8 pounds and just when I think its not “that much” I look or imagine a 7-8 pound package of meat, and that is A LOT of weight! (makes me feel better)!

?I am not a scale person, I do not get hung up on numbers except the single digit number I like to see on my clothing label (do not like doubles but they seem to like me lately). With spring and summer looming, and some of my favorite clothes being shown…its time to get busy. I have been on my diet for a little over four weeks now,? I know from experience the first week is always the toughest.

Oh to give up my beloved cheeses, pastas, fresh breads, chocolates…it pains me to even write this much less think of them as old flames. So…I am being good and sticking to it and doing what I need to do (no one said I don’t have fantasies about a big bowl of pastas or a chunk of fresh parm and baguettes right out of the oven)…..dreaming is calorie free. But I do like to reward myself at 5 or 10 pound intervals with a little celebration meal here and there:).

So…here’s my question to all of you, what are your tips? For anyone who has lost weight, whether its 2 pounds or 200, what worked for you? What kinds of foods sustained you? Snacks that were sure things? How much water? Did you weigh or didn’t you? Come on..do tell. Knowledge is power and I bet you will not only be helping me but many others getting ready for the “bare your arms”season…your turn to talk! Here are 5 things that are keeping me going…..

?MY DIET AIDS…..

1. POLAND SPRING, drink tons of water. I do think it helps to curb the appetite and I also like to add a flavor enhancer like Crystal Light’s mini packets with some great flavors like raspberry, lemonade, mango, many good ones!

2. CHOCOLATE! I LOVE these because it allows me to at least think I haven’t totally had to give up my beloved chocolate. A single brownie (pretty generously sized) is only 90 calories and its quite good and really satisfies my chocolate cravings.

3. ALMONDS.Carry these handy little packs with me everywhere I go. When I am hungry,I just nibble on these at 100 calories a package, it allows me to hold myself over between meals.

4. FRUIT.We are big fruit lovers, as with everything, this too is in moderation but I find keeping big bowls of cut fruit in addition to a meal gives me a little sugar without being too decadent.

5.SALADS. I have come up with some pretty creative salads, eat lots of Greek salads, love a good tex mex salad, a Chinese chicken salad, we all know often the hidden calories are in the dressing so I normally do not give into temptation and ask for it on the side.?

A recent discovery (not shown) which I am LOVING are the Kelloggs Special K crackers/chips. They are soooo good! 90 calories a bag, it gives me the salty crunchy fix I need and miss from when I used to pop open a bag of “real chips” or crackers. These are perfect to keep in my bag for an “on the go” snack, THANKS KELLOGGS!

?Your turn to talk and share your tips. What has worked for you? Any secrets we should all know about that you care to share? I know above all else, this is one thing likely MANY of us have in common, we have all at some point been on a diet.

I welcome your ideas, tips or strategies. Some days are granted easier than others, the busier I am, the easier it is…being on vacation surprisingly makes dieting for me pretty easy, so guess I need to go on more trips! LOL…can’t wait to hear your two cents!! Enjoy your day.
