Reflections of 2013 and Happy New Years Eve!!

Hello and Happy new years eve! Reporting? from sunny?California…where the weather is just perfect in?every sense. Sunny, warm, 70’s, zero humidity…….it is heaven especially coming from cold, icy NY! I prepared this post in advance……?I just cannot believe 2013 is over. Hard to believe we are about to start a whole new year…wow this one really flew. I feel like I say it every year but this year I really really mean it. It was a good year, a productive year and a year filled with many highlights. There are still many many things on my “to do” list and I am hoping that 2014 will allow me to bring those to fruition. I have a penchant for even numbers and 14 happens to be one of my lucky numbers so I am quite looking forward to 2014!

As I have done the last two years (wow cannot believe I have been blogging that long) I have created a post on reflections from this past year as well as a favorite post from each month of the last year. Hope you enjoy…I cannot thank you enough for your support, friendship, I feel incredibly fortunate and look forward to another wonderful year together! I will be back on Jan. 4th and very much look forward to resuming?blogging and starting off 2014 with a bang!

Reflections on 2013…….

Taking advantage of time. It is a cliche but a true one at that.? I have learned how precious time really is…and to try to take advantage of “living in the moment”, seizing opportunities when they happen. I have gotten pretty bold about just going for it as opposed to saying one day I would like to do this or that. Time is so precious and it is a gift, don’t let it pass you by and then one day you have no choice but to?look back with regret because that moment of opportunity has come and gone.

Quality vs. quantity in relationships. I have been very very blessed to have some incredible friendships.?As with all things in life, some come and some go.?????????? Many I have had for over 20 years and they are still going strong. Some have proven their friendship more than others…..I have learned that it is far more valuable to have a few close true authentic friends than a bunch of people who might not have your back or just be there when it’s fun and fabulous. You know a? good friend by how they react during a tough time, they know when you are?sick or?stressed and are there unconditionally with support, a hug and?a smile. They are by your side not through not just the fun times but the tough ones, when you are sick or down….those are the friends who are the “real deal”.? I value and cherish the friendships I have and am incredibly thankful for them. You?know?who?you are……a million thanks!

Becoming an empty nester. I honestly feel way way too young to almost be an empty nester. Just saying the word makes me well up. My “baby” all six feet of him will be off to college next year fulfilling his dream of playing college lacrosse…it is a dream we are so happy to share with him but it is a chapter closing to what has been virtually my entire life. To any of you who have young kids…..I cannot stress enough how important it is to find the enjoyment and joy out of even the small every day happenings….one day you will wake up and they too will be heading off to college. I have no regrets, I devoted my life to my three kids and wouldnt’ have it any other way. Take all the pictures you want to, even if people make fun of you for it (my family sure did) they will one day be the one thing that can “take you back” to their childhood and fond family memories.I know the silver lining in all of this is more time to myself to pursue dreams and ambitions that maybe had to take a backseat to my most important job, motherhood. More time with my hubby to work on projects together, and travel more……a new stage which will take getting used to. I am thankful to have so many amazingly fond memories of my kids when they were young and still “in my nest” but know there are many special times ahead……

Travel. I really miss traveling the way we used to. All except the flying part!? But thankfully there are meds to get me on the plane and keep me happy and calm! I plan to resume more traveling in the coming year and already have a few ideas for trips including that southern road trip that didn’t happen! I LOVE this quote and think it is so on the mark. Travel makes you feel alive and helps you see a different perspective both of the world all the way until you get home….you know that feeling of??walking?into your home after being away and looking at things with a whole new set of eyes and renewed vigor! Travel really does invigorate me.

Slowing down. Up until about 6 years ago?I was my happiest being busy 24/7. I was known as the one who was never home and if someone caught me at home it was? a surprise. Now (possibly in part thanks to blogging) I LOVE being home. I have in fact become a bit of a homebody, go figure! I am definitely my happiest being home, being in comfy yoga pants and doing things like blogging, reading,?cooking up something yummy, sprucing up something around the house or plotting my next project:) I dont’ miss my frantic lifestyle of going morning, noon and night and love and relish this more relaxed stage of my life. I take it slow and am not afraid to say no to doing things…it is liberating!

Great food. Hey, whats life without something good to eat! I do not fit into my size 6’s anymore and of course I miss looking so svelte but I have to admit I do love good food, love cooking it, buying it and tasting it. Life is too short to not enjoy it. The only thing I want to do different in 2014 is to incorporate more exercise into my life. This might help offset my habit that is here to stay of eating great foods. Life wouldn’t be worth living without cheese, bread, a bit of chocolate,etc…..can’t give those up, no way. But I will start getting back to a regular exercise regimen! Goal for 2014……………of course while enjoying a nice chunk of parmigaiano and a good glass of wine 🙂

Everyone is fighting a battle. I totally believe this. No one and I mean no one goes through life unscathed. Everyone is fighting a battle, some big and some small. I love the saying ” the grass is greener where you water it”. It is easy to look over your shoulder to someone who might seemingly have it better than you but truth is things are not always what they seem. If you walk through life assuming that everyone has something they are battling….you might find yourself being more compassionate and empathetic towards people. I have adopted this and have found its made a difference in how I treat people.

All things worth having are worth waiting for. Boy is that ever true. Case in point my bedroom. I so believed in getting wall to wall carpet for my bedroom that it was worth the “standoff” with my husband for almost a year and a half! But finally we got it and I have been unstoppable in getting the room completed!! Window treatments got put up within weeks, my new lamps were placed on their nightstands, new down comforter and pillows ordered to fill the new linens…indeed the room has come together in just weeks because I felt inspired to finish it at long last. I walk into my room now and am overjoyed with how it makes me feel. It is truly my private oasis. A refuge to get away from our chaotic world, it is everything I wanted and dreamed of. It made me realize and confirmed how very true it that it is indeed worth the wait to get what you want, so don’t?compromise?if you don’t have to. Carry on with a little more fight…..think you will be happy in the end:)

Hope you enjoyed this post…..what are your own reflections from 2013? Learn something new or did something inspire you to carry into the new year? I like closing the door to the current year having learned a thing or two and starting the new year feeling inspired and enlightened.

?I thank you again for following along…without your support, friendship, encouraging words and countless emails (which I LOVE to read) this blog would cease to exist. You give me a great reason to get up and?excited to blog and share so?sending a?great?great big thank?you! I look forward to an even better 2014! Cheers to a new year filled with all great things, good health, happiness, love and plenty of laughter:)

A holiday recap and leaving on a jet plane……

Hi…wow does anyone else feel like December was just one big blur? I cannot believe Christmas and all the buildup has come and gone! So much fun, so crazy and chaotic, LOTS of work, endless cooking, food and cleanup…….and I loved every single minute of it. We had the good fortune to have hosted my family as well my incredible 96 year old grandmother…you heard right! I soooo hope just a smidgeon of her super incredible genes are in my body:) We had a blast…so much fun game playing, eating, cooking, entertaining, movie watching, you name it …..all that was on my wishlist was indeed accomplished.

On Christmas night, as we all sat together in my living room which looked all aglow with just the sconces on and candles lit, I for a brief moment looked around at all those I love and realized at that very moment that is what perfect feels like. We were all together in good health, safe and warm, and I felt so blessed at that very moment and to me, that was the essence of Christmas. So I feel incredibly grateful and will always cherish Christmas 2013.

I admittedly had a lot of fun decorating my home. Though I realized after years of collecting decorations that have red in them I am ready for a change. And had a “aha” moment while one day in Lord and Taylor’s holiday shop,? I spotted the most beautiful silvery and pale gray/blue garland. That is when I got my divine inspiration for a new direction. So I bought all they had and proceeded to transform my dining room with the new color scheme. By next year…I hope to extend it to the rest of the house. I may gather up all my beautiful decorations that have the red in them and sell them as one big lot, not sure. They have certainly seen me through some wonderful holidays…but change is good! So thought I would share a few final shots of the past few days when all decorations were completed.

This post is very picture heavy…..you might want to take a seat and grab another cup of coffee:)

I finally got my front door together. I kept it simple and elegant, lots of greens and magnolia leaves. I never got to do a few things I wanted to do, thanks to unexpected snowfalls and deep freezes so had to try to do what I could? in between when things thawed out…

Other festive vignettes around the house……

Every year I display my adorable ceramic holiday cupcakes in my domed displays……..

Just back from the local nursery with all my white holiday flowers ready to put into planters……

A Christmas gift to me from me started collected Royal Crown Derby’s Blue Mikado…..so pretty!

My dining room and its new gorgeous soft colored holiday decor…..

And I kept tweaking once I added all my white flowers…white paperwhites and white amaryllis!

?A few pics from my family Christmas party (as things were setting up)…..

Say hello to my GORGEOUS new blue pillows that I had made….in love with them (a Christmas present to myself:)

LOVE these pillows so much and got more of the velvet to make a tufted ottoman for my living room

Dessert is served…….

And Christmas day dinner getting set up…..

Since we needed two extra seats, set up this table for two….love a small intimate table, don’t you?

I just love setting up my table with the napkin rings, they always end up being such wonderful conversation pieces

Christmas night, my sons girlfriend and family were coming by so we set up drinks and a few things to nibble on…..

So that’s a wrap up of my holidays….so much fun, and so very memorable. Yes, my feet are tired and I feel a bit worn out but it was so worth all the effort, it was a truly wonderful and perfect holiday! I hope yours were the same.

?I am leaving for a much needed and much anticipated vacation to California. You can be sure my iPhone will be charged and ready to capture the beauty and inspiration that California always promises! I will not be around for the next week so look forward to catching up when I return on Jan. 5th. I do have a post planned to post on Jan. 1st and hope it will work (used the blogger scheduler to do this) so just in case,? I will wish you all now nothing but the best in 2014….may it bring you much love, peace and laughter.

35 MORE ways to rock a Christmas gift- an encore!

?A reminder that the last day to place holiday orders for my online shop is this Sunday, Dec. 15th

Well hello there….hope you are doing well. Snow is falling here…so it feels like the festive season is official:)? I had intended to post on my holiday decor but alas I am not quite ready and have yet to take pictures (hopefully tomorrow). I think its safe to say the Christmas chaos has officially begun! I bet this post has many of you knee deep in wrapping paper, tape and ribbon…..and playing Santa’s wrapping elf!

?I do love wrapping gifts but have to admit so far I have only wrapped one (maybe that’s because that is all I have bought so far:) But many things have been ordered and I will be looking for daily visits from the big brown truck.? This post is therefore quite timely I would imagine for many of us.

My 35 ways to rock a Christmas present post last year was incredibly popular. I still get tons of visits to it and see many images from it on Pinterest so an encore felt appropriate. Let’s face it….when you aren’t under pressure, wrapping a gift can be such fun. A great way to make something special feel extraordinary. Who doesn’t love to receive a beautifully packaged gift, I know I do (hint hint to any of my family members reading this:)

35 MORE ways to rock a Christmas gift- an encore!

A reminder that the last day to place holiday orders for my online shop is this Sunday, Dec. 15th

Well hello there….hope you are doing well. Snow is falling here…so it feels like the festive season is official:)  I had intended to post on my holiday decor but alas I am not quite ready and have yet to take pictures (hopefully tomorrow). I think its safe to say the Christmas chaos has officially begun! I bet this post has many of you knee deep in wrapping paper, tape and ribbon…..and playing Santa’s wrapping elf!

I do love wrapping gifts but have to admit so far I have only wrapped one (maybe that’s because that is all I have bought so far:) But many things have been ordered and I will be looking for daily visits from the big brown truck.

By Invitation Only……..Christmas Cocktails!!

Hi there! So excited to be here for our last By Invitation Only post for 2013…….hard to believe! Where did the time go? 2013 has been an amazing year and I am so fortunate to have been included with such a talented and inspiring group of women/fellow bloggers. It has been fun coming up with our own take? on various themes this year……..and I so enjoy seeing what everyone else comes up with too!

The theme this month is both a festive and fun one, Christmas cocktails…..and I had a ball putting it together. Especially since I was originally planning on throwing a real live shindig but alas it was not meant to happen, however am hoping to do a post holiday bash in January. So I had fun living vicariously? through this party and best part of all…you are all invited!

Ready for me to open the door so you can come on in and get this party started?

My invitation might look something like this…..

And as your festive hostess, this is what I will be wearing…..

This gorgeous red lace dress (my Christmas wish came true early…I can eat all I want forever and ever and never gain a pound, hence how I will fit into this dress)!

And of course to show my spirit….gotta add a little green!

And can’t decide which of these beauties to include, maybe both!

A little gold polishes it off!

And when the party is in full swing, and no one is looking I will change into these (hey at least they are festive)!

Come on in…….

?The first thing that greets you will be the Christmas tree in the foyer…but it’s not the last one you will see!

You will hear all of your favorite holiday tunes being sung by real live Christmas carolers all dressed up in their holiday finest!

You are then handed a glass of champagne to start the celebrating!

?And as you stroll throughout the house with the hum of the carolers singing their tunes, you see that in every room, Christmas had indeed arrived. I have tables set up all over the house as “food stations” so that people will walk and mingle…..

?Festive touches are everywhere…….

Every space has been decorated to the nines in its Christmas finest!
?The breakfast is cheery and festive too….
?And of course I didn’t forget about decorating the kitchen!!!!
?I have great big bowls of holiday apples and evergreen..

?Paperwhites will be all over….permeating my home with their intoxicating scent

A local master baker has created this incredible take on a gingerbread house as one of my centerpieces!

?And of course my trademark blue and white is all over the place….

This is a cocktail party…no formal stuffy sit down dinners. This is a casual but elegant affair with a ton of appetizers, both stationery and passed. A quick look at some of the foods that will be served…….we know it’s all about the food!!

Mini ceasar salads served in small mint julep cups

Feta and tomato crostinis

Fruits and chocolate tuxedo strawberries

Crab stuffed mushrooms

?Mini shrimp cocktail

Mini? Fish tacos and patron

?A modern and whimscial take on pigs in a blanket:)

Flank steak and avocado on a crostini…yum!

Crab ragoons

Skewered lime shrimp

And if you are like me, what you? really want to know about are? the desserts, here is just a sampling of what will be served….

A gorgeous cookie display of amazing cookies to take home!

All kinds of amazing cakes!

Donuts and milk anyone?

And these cakes do not need narration….YES they are that good!

An assortment of Ms. Prindables apples

Incredible cameo cookies

This is cruel,? I know……… to post so many delectable goodies especially when I am hungry, sorry for any binges this might create…hey, its the holidays, enjoy!

Once we are done toasting, cheering, laughing eating to our hearts delight and of course singing through it all…..I hand out these darling party favors!

And as the night wraps up….and everyone grabs their favor and bids us farewell…you will never guess who is waiting outside in the front yard to lead the way home!

Thanksgiving greetings and a walk down memory lane……

Hi everyone!? I wanted to pop in today to say hello and a short goodbye? and to wish all of my readers, amazing blogging friends, both old and new…….the happiest and healthiest Thanksgiving holiday.? It is a special time for us all to reflect on our blessings and to give thanks and I have so much to be thankful for…..including my blog and all of you for caring about what I have to say:)

?I had quite a week last week and even now with this strange rash, yesterday ruled out shingles (thank God)! They determined (3 doctors) that it is definitely a reaction and likely was the poison ivy as originally suspected but a stubborn strain so they gave me 13 tiny steroid injections into my neck (where its most affected) and indeed I am feeling much more comfortable though I look like a teenager plagued with a case of acne…ahh the beauty of scarves and chunky necklaces!

We are headed to my families home and then to my sisters for Thanksgiving so I will taking off the next four days to celebrate the holiday and spend quality time with my family.? My stretch pants are packed, any guilt about enjoying great food over the next few days has been stashed away for future binges (we are all and should be rightfully exempt for Thanksgiving)! I will miss blogland but am also looking forward to this treasured time doing a whole lot of nothing (besides eating and game playing 🙂

I thought it would be fun to go back a bit and? share with you some much older posts, many that you possibly have not seen. I also found some fun guests posts where I was a guest on someone else’s blog that were fun to read over…… It was so enjoyable walking down memory lane!

Don’t forget about the spectacular giveaway courtesy of Seda France for two magnificent chinoiserie pillows. A winner will be chosen and announced on Sunday morning (details on bottom). And of course my “Hooray for the holidays” contest, taking pictures until Dec. 4th so don’t miss out on a photo op this Thanksgiving (details on the bottom).

Ready to walk down memory lane with me? Let’s go……
