Which would you choose?

Good evening from icy, snowy, messy New York.  Yesterday it was snow, today we are in the midst of a serious snow/ice storm. CRAZY weather, this is a winter surely to go down in the history books! I am so over winter, and praying for an early spring. Moving along…..

I cannot tell you how touched I was by all of the comments regarding my empty nester post yesterday and all the emails I received too…not only did you offer such  amazing and encouraging advice but honestly the kindness bestowed upon me brought tears to my eyes, thanks to you I am now feeling a wee bit more optimist about my soon to be empty nester status:) Whether you are an empty nester, soon to be one, or still have little ones at home…..reading over the comments is heartwarming and if you have an extra few minutes, I really encourage you to do so (click here). They would make a wonderful book! Thank you, I know I will refer back to it time and time again:)

So imagine this, the furniture fairy has paid you a visit…she is going to grant you with one wave of her wand a brand new fully done up living room! So imagine for a minute, one of these gets to be yours…which would it be? I set it up poll style…and since there are so many pretties, you can vote for two, so think hard:)

Which living room do you lust after?

The tale of two showhouses….

Hi there! Don’t forget to enter the pillow giveaway (my weekly giveaway) click here if you missed it. And of course loving all the beautiful “Hooray for the holidays” pictures I am getting and hope you will participate. All details on bottom.

Moving onto one of my favorite subjects…….designer showhouses!  I attended not one but two show houses recently and there were so many lovely things to share that it warranted its very own post:) I love show houses but have to say I have been disappointed in recent years over them and don’t remember going to many that I loved, at least not the way I used to.

I used to come home and dream of what I saw and felt so inspired to start sprucing up my own house……but that has not been the case in recent years, most have disappointed with a few winning rooms amidst a bunch of underwhelming  and lackluster ones. So these were both a treat…. even if some of these rooms were not exactly my taste they were done really well and I had a definite  appreciation for the attention to detail, the imagination and creativity used and how they went the “extra mile”.  I am excited to share with you some of the beauty today! Ready to come inside?

House (if you can call it that) number one. The first house was done in the most palatial turn of the century masterpieces built for the famed Guggenheim Family in Sands Point, NY. Called Hempstead House, or the Sands Point Preserve, it sits on one of the most prime spots overlooking the Long Island sound, affording it practically a panoramic view. Built in 1917, it is really something to behold!  If you want to find out more about this architectural gem, click here.

VERY PICTURE HEAVY….SO BE SURE TO TAKE A SEAT AND GRAB ANOTHER CUP OF JAVA!

Even if there wasn’t a single piece of furniture it would be worth it to visit just to take in the majesty and grandeur…oh if only those walls could talk! Today it is owned by the county and serves as a museum and is a registered landmark. It was a positively regal home to have a showhouse in! Come inside…..

 Pretty breathtaking…don’t you think?
Upon entering there is a massive sunken Palm court (foyer to most of us little people)
The dining room….interesting how they made it all white and so modern, it was a great twist, very Phillipe Starck!

This massive sunroom with the most amazing stonework became a billiards room…a very big one! (done by Keith Baltimore) I could see some serious parties in this space!

Of course my eye went straight to the magnificent Provence planter…really love this one!

Upon entering the magnificent and very palatial living room done beautifully by Safavieh Home which took the award for best room

This one picture has me rethinking my own breakfast room with a much smaller bay of windows but its the same idea….LOVE the window seat and all the pillows!

It was a very dramatic space…..with 16 foot ceilings!

The windows were amazing at every turn!

Onto the family room which is piggybacked to the living room…so has a similar style architecturally, same windows,etc…..

You don’t see fireplaces like this anymore!
 Or ceilings like this one!

Or how about this absolutely incredible limestone stair tower…at one time looks like an organ lived up there!

Upon entering what I thought was the prettiest bedroom of the house…and what a way to be greeted!

This was the “bridal room” done by Liz Cordeiro, it was quite beautiful and overlooks the sound!

The faux fur throws gave it a very Hollywood retro vibe…super glamorous!

In another room which didn’t excite me, I was impressed with the creative approach to filling the fireplace…..so interesting!

This bedroom was like a throwback, it was done really well and authentically. I almost felt swept away to another era.

And check out these killer views…..they were beyond words!

The back of the house, unfortunately the sun was so bright, it made taking pictures from the back challenging

Ahh…here we go, a little better!

That is yet another mansion built on the same property, rumor has it for the wife and her “boyfriend”

A side view of the magnificent porte cochere…..amazing!

It looks more like a university than a home….but it was such a treat to visit! I love being taken back to earlier times and it was easy to imagine the living large, the parties, the holidays, that all took place here…magical!

Moving along to the second house, a  much more manageable and “human sized” abode  but nevertheless a very  stately home, the kind of house you walk in and can actually imagine living in. I thought this was really well done.  It is a home built in around 1920 but it was lovingly restored an felt fresh and new. Very very charming. Come on inside…..

Darling and charming bathroom…..love the Scalamandre paper!

Very cozy den/library…love the more transitional take in a very traditional room

Now entering the living room, done in very pale powdery blues and creams…..

Loved the sunroom done by Rinfret group! Recognize the lantern from the custom tole line I carry!

Moving along outside to the patio….I wouldn’t do orange myself but it really worked here and was so “fall like”….

Charming herb garden

How perfectly round are those mums!
Love the old brick walkway around the garden

Fell in love with these uber charming topiaries!!

Beautiful dining room courtesy of Barbara of Hampton Hostess fame….so well done!

Cozy sitting area off the kitchen

Interesting tile mosaic backsplash…always fun to see the new trends!

This was a small study off the kitchen but sooo cozy and so well done complete with tiny wet bar

Eat in breakfast space……

Breakfast room looking into the kitchen

Gotta love this laundry room…this could anyone excited to do laundry! Such a feel good room…….

Welcome to a guest room or a great teenage girls room….nicely done!

You know I loved the bathroom that went with it….I spy blue and white!

Up on the third floor was a bonafide mancave, my sons would LOVE this space..pics were dark though.

Back to the living room…..

And that glorious sunroom…..

And that great bathroom on our way out had to take one last pic!

This beautiful chinoisereie was found in a small vestibule off the foyer

Gorgeous painted ceiling

Outside the foliage was fully ablaze in a rhapsody of color……

Loved this charming little vignette right off the main foyer……….

I haven’t seen this before, but how beautiful! Mirror around the fireplace…..very very pretty!

Back to the dining room…told you there is no rhyme or reason to the sequence of these pictures!

Living room…..

Heading upstairs…..(again)!

Small but charming master bath and bedroom…..

So there you have it! Which house do you like more? Obviously one is like a museum and though it was incredible to visit..it would be hard to imagine living there. However with a staff as they used to have it….maybe I would reconsider:) They were a treat to attend and it restored my faith in one of my favorite pastimes, going to designer showhouses! Hope you enjoyed…did you have a favorite room?

Mr. and Mrs. Howard and a giveaway!

Good morning! I had the opportunity to attend an intimate Q&A with Mr. and Mrs. Howard over at the spectacular Safavieh Showroom in Stamford, CT.  yes….that talented duo that produces some of my all time favorite rooms…..rooms that fill  endless pages in blogland and Pinterest boards. What a lovely, charming and talented couple they are! I loved hearing about their story, how they got started in their business….and as with most things in life, when something is meant to be, it somehow just “happens” in a rather effortless way. Their story is wonderful, heart warming, inspiring and proof that when you have a passion for something and follow your heart, sometimes amazing things can happen and the rest will follow…..their wild success is certainly a tribute to that!! I also love that they are a husband and wife team……that in itself is a huge feat:)

Their new line for Sherrill furniture is absolutely gorgeous. There isn’t a piece of furniture there I would be delighted to add to my own home. It is traditional but has a current/modern edge that makes the furniture highly appealing and most appropriate for today’s slightly more casual lifestyle. I love that nearly every piece is made in the U.S.A. (worth its weight in gold)! Sherrill produces excellent quality, extremely comfortable and affordable furniture,  it’s no wonder that they are a very popular “go to” source for so many designers. The Mr. and Mrs Howard furniture line feels much like their namesake rooms do, welcoming, elegant, crisp and clean, warm and sophisticated.

Phoebe was so kind to sign a copy of her exquisite new bestselling book, The Joy of Decorating for one of my lucky readers. I have owned this book since it came out and have referred to it countless times, enjoyed hearing their stories and love how the book is categorized by themes. It is a true feast for the senses!

I am quite sure, that many of you, being the savvy design loving readers you are,  own this book but for those that don’t this is one of those “must haves” that belongs in every design lovers home. So I am giving away a signed book to one lucky winner! Lets take a look at rooms that have received the Howard magic and a few favorite pieces from The Sherrill Collection, then details follow on the bottom………

Some exquisite new pieces from the Sherrill Collection for Mr. and Mrs. Howard…..

And while their rooms need no introduction……here’s a look at some of my personal favorites!

This is one of my all time favorite bedrooms (for anyone who has been reading my blog a long time, you know this)!

This could make me want to call in sick every day!

Love everything, every tine detail about this space…..recognize the belljar?

Love the cocoon like feeling of this sumptuous bedroom…..

Pretty spectacular wouldn’t you say?  The book is filled with so many stunning images front to back….a true keeper. To me, their rooms always feel like walking onto a perfect billowy cloud, my absolute favorite feeling for a room. They design and decorate a “Howard room” with just the right amount of elegance, sophistication and clean lines sprinkled with a healthy dose of soft colors and lots of lovely painted finishes. Do you notice not a lot of pattern in their rooms? I think this is why they are so pleasing to the eye and why they are no doubt, a household name for anyone in the know:)

So how to win this wonderful signed book…..visit them over at Sherrill Furniture , come back here and tell me your favorite item from their new collection. Want a second chance? Subscribe to become a reader on her blog, which by the way is really fantastic, filed with all kinds of valuable “how tos” and I love their weekly before and afters. Phoebe is really generous in sharing her talent, knowledge and expertise through her blog. I will announce one lucky winner on Monday!

Want to see even more of their work, click here to visit their website.

Many thanks as always for stopping in and wishing you a fabulous Thursday!

Also on a sidenote, by popular demand was able to get 10 more sets of these gorgeous appetizer/dessert plates. Many emailed me but I had none left to sell, they sold out  almost right away. Email me at theenchantedhome@gmail.com if you want to place an order, they are ready to go!

Every now and then I stumble across a designer or architect who just speaks to me and the work of the architectural/design firm of J Wilson Fuqua and Associates? spoke to me loud and clear! Antler mania!

Hello there and happy Monday morning to you.  How was your weekend? Ours was very nice, a Friday night football game, some US Open tennis, dinner with great friends, and plenty of down time on Sunday to enjoy the most spectacular weather we have had in ages. Breezy, high 60’s, bright skies….it doesn’t get better than that! Fall is definitely on our doorstep and it has me thinking about all kinds of things from cooking up our favorite comfort foods, getting to wear beautiful soft cool weather layers and  creating cozy inviting interiors as we get ready for the “hibernation season”.

One thing I really like is antlers. There are obviously real and many many faux. I have bought two very good faux antlers and  had just the spot for one but unfortunately it will not work so I am scouring my home to find out where else I might use them…..have this mild obsession with antlers. Think the first time I fell in love with them is when I visited my aunts spectacular home in France and saw a limestone pair gracing their front door then once inside, they were in the gorgeous library, and then onto the kitchen.

While in France we were lucky to visit a few peoples homes and antlers seemed to be de rigour. I took notice and  made some personal notes. Antlers have become a pretty hot item, both faux and real. My latest thought is  I think I want to place them possibly above my stone hood in my kitchen and possibly in the family room at some point. Whats your opinion on them? Do you like them? I like that you now see them not only in very traditional interiors but modern and transitional ones as well…this decorative element though classic is proving it has a fun and funky side too……

I like this space, simple and elegant, Bungalow Blue
A collection of pretty antlers is a fun way to dress up the wall on top of a pretty chest,,  Between naps on the front porch
Leave it up to Ralph to create such a sumptuous table…..rustic perfection!
The antler collection here is so ideal….Timothy Corrigan
Talk about making a major statement, check out this antler chandelier! Barefoot floor

I think this space is pretty amazing, and a great mix of styles, Luella and June

Suzanne Kasler took a bunch of white resin antlers and created a dramatic wall vignette in this more modern feeling space

If I had a mountain/ski house…I owuld love to recreate this powder room, love that antler mirror!

The antler chandelier looks gorgeous on this beautiful porch, Houzz

Jennifer Brouwer uses a pair of antlers above a mantle in this cozy transitional space beautifully

I really love them when used in conjunction with other elements like layering them with art, and other decorative objects, Pottery Barn

 Antlers are everywhere in France…….

Love this amazing antler Chandler for this gorgeous outdoor space!

Rinfret got it right with these stunning antler sconces…love this foyer!

This is a great example of mixing the old and new, shiny and rustic….

Gorgeous antlers in this sensational bath, Martyn Thompson

This all white more transitional setting shows resin antlers work with all decors! Mary McGee

Antlers in grand spaces like this chateau are a match made in heaven….

This transitional office space gets an entire wall of antlers, makes for an interesting wall! House Beautiful

They are a great way to add interest to any blank wall, Gretha Scholtz

The antlers give this dark masculine space a wonderful added touch!

Love this idea of adding a pair of antler to a gorgeous wreath!

Have always loved this room by Kathleen Rivers

Even in a very monochromatic space…they add a sense of texture and interest, RH
I love antlers when paired with interesting art!
This showroom was filled with the most beautiful antler pieces, my own picture taken at Maison de Objet  show in Paris

Sometimes antlers are used merely for decorative objects such as in this pretty kitchen, House Beautiful

So….thats a wrap up on antlers. What do you think? Like? Love? I would love to hear what you have to say on the matter. Hope you are off to having a fabulous day and a great week. Thanks for stopping in……..
