My weekend as seen through my iphone…..

?REMINDER- Last day to enter the giveaway from The Enchanted Home over at Art by Karena. Click here to enter!

This is a short fun post. Hope you are having a wonderful and enjoyable weekend. Ours is going well…..my son ended up not going to his tournament ?which secretly was kind of amazing to me so it allowed me a little extra free downtime, always a huge treat! We enjoyed having friends over, a beautiful dinner out, a trip to a favorite garden center,? a visit to a local farmstand that just opened and today we are going to a few more garden centers and then a graduation party later in the day.

?Since my poor camera (heavily abused) is now officially “in retirement”? I have to rely on my iphone. Just got the new iPhone 5 a few days ago and will concede that the camera is much better than the 4. I did not like the quality of the pictures from my old phone so this one is a step up. Anywho….as I love to take pictures of just about anything and can rival any Japanese tourist I took various pictures that kind of tell a story of my happenings in the last few days. Thought it would make a fun and “quickie” post (quick by my standards). Ready? Here we go…..

A wonderful event at Safavieh…a table too pretty to not take a picture of, love the crudite “trunk”…

?My local farm stand finally opened….what a treat!
Fresh bread getting sliced up for crostinis I am making for appetizers……….
?Basil, parsley and fresh tomatoes….doesn’t get better!

?Fresh strawberries..yum!

?Baby carrots….

Cut up bellpepper in half to serve as “bowls” for my dip

Add a little lighting for some ambiance…..

Light the candles outside on the loggia……
Loving my pillows!! A post on this to come in the next week or two…..

Adding my finishing touches, love the look of baby carrots and a yummy healthy spinach dip made with Greek yogurt…..

?Aren’t these glasses beautiful? Bought them at an antique shop in CT. a while back……

I bought a large lot of them….it was like a crystal glass jackpot, love them!

And of course every get together in my home must include some kind of crostini (we were having friends over)….could easily make a meal of these plus they are so pretty!

?And I got the best fresh figs with the fresh strawberries…they were soooo good.

Bought five of these very large white “Annabelle” ?hydrangea flower bushes….going to have them planted today

Spent a little time by the pool……

This was the original pool house which we have done nothing to other than clean it up, it still has a lot of charm but eventually hope to give it a “facelift”

This extra large lattice planter, (think playhouse size) over 4′ x 4′ x 4′ is getting planted on Sunday

?So excited! These gardenia topiaries that were dying I was able to bring back to life and they just sprouted their very first blooms in months!! This was a thrill:)

?And hydrangeas are bloomimg in my yard, not to say this is my favorite color but they are pretty

?Visited a local nursery………..

?This darling scultpure is of a girl and boy swinging to be hung from a tree….so cute!

?Aren’t these pretty? The beautiful flowers our friends brought us over when they came over last night

?Raised my window treatment in my bathroom to make it a little fuller and I like it!

Finally finished the floor of the small powder room off the library….now waiting for the wallpaper…..

This paper I have had in that little bathroom for nearly a year! I am finally taking the plunge…still love it as much as the day I found it!
? So that’s a wrap of my weekend as seen through my trusty iPhone. Today we have a graduation party and hoping it doesn’t rain! Hope you are enjoying a wonderful and relaxing weekend…hard to believe next week is July 4th! Summer is flying…….

Bloggers beautiful abodes…..Elizabeth of Pretty Pink Tulips!

Good Monday morning to you! Hope you had a wonderful weekend. Ours was very relaxing, a lot of downtime which was  a nice treat.  And finally for the first time, I can say I actually tasted a tiny bit of spring this weekend….at last I think its arrived and I am hearing we might hit 70 degrees tomorrow!! So excited to be here today, featuring a dear blogging friend who is super stylish and someone I know many of us follow and adore. Please welcome the lovely………

Elizabeth of Pretty Pink Tulips

Pretty Pink Tulips is like one stop shopping for all things beautiful. Whether she is introducing us to a new artist, a fabulous new line of stationary, updating us on something gorgeous she is doing to her home, offering up a beautiful party favor idea,  or giving us an inside peek into a wonderful event she has attended……it is guaranteed that whatever Elizabeth is talking about, it’s worth the listen! I love her wonderful, effortless, elegant style and so was so happy she is joining us here today.  I really enjoyed seeing all these gorgeous pictures of her home (some new things that most have  not yet seen) and hearing her words of wisdom, so get your pen and paper ready and let Elizabeth take the stage……

1. How long have you been in your present home?  Is this it for the long haul? Anything you would care to change if you could?

We have lived in this house for 6 years. Even though I love our home, I only see us staying here until our 2 boys are finished with high school. After that, I think I would enjoy downsizing and living somewhere in the South. I kind of feel like I am “caretaking” this house for the next family. Our neighborhood is ideal for young children, so once mine are gone, I think it will be time to leave. Of course, most of my plans have a way of changing….so you never know!
There is a lot I like about this house, but I think the lot is a little odd. It’s a rectangle and the house is situated with yard on the sides and not much in the back. I would love a larger back yard and a larger kitchen. I have “island” envy, since I don’t have one.

Luckily, we recently finished a renovation which enabled me to fix many of the things I did want to change. Such as, no covered entry into the house, a teeny tiny laundry room, no mudroom, a lack of a play space for my boys and their friends, peeling siding and a leaky roof!
Our new mudroom

2. If you could only live in two rooms of your house, which two would they be?

First, I think I would choose my bedroom because it feels cozy and I can see the tree tops. I find it very calming.  Second, the kitchen/family room as it is open space where I can cook, work at my desk, the kids can do their homework, we can watch t.v. It is literally in the center of the house and where I begin and end every day.
Master bedroom
Kitchen/Family room
The kitchen, family room is currently undergoing a transition to beach colors…sky, sand and ocean. Here’s a peek at the fabrics I’m using.

3. How would you describe your decorating style?

I think my style has loosened up since I’ve lived in this house. (Perhaps because I’m raising young boys?!) I used to like things more formal. Now, I’m more interested in comfort and usability. Although, I still like things to look elegant and chic. So….”soothing and sophisticated”, might be a good description.  My color preferences are also shifting. Less beige and leanings toward gray and greige.

4. Do you have a favorite color scheme? What is it?

I find that I consistently like neutral colors for major pieces and then I can add color and texture with my accessories. For example, in the living room the accents are hot pink and chocolate brown.
Living Room
I recently wallpapered our center hall with a neutral but busy print.  I have a tapestry that we bought for the living room of our old home…but it just seemed to be the perfect large scale work of art for our narrow hallway. And, it pulls the colors from each of the rooms that feed into it.
My antelope stair runner is one of my favorite things in the house.

5. Favorite room of your house and why?

My favorite room is the one we call “the brown room” (because it’s painted a dark brown). It’s a great room for cocktails and conversation or just curling up with a magazine or watching t.v.

6. Best two tips you can give to anyone looking to tackle the decorating of their own home? Best two things to NOT do?

I think one of the most important things to consider is the “flow” of a home. Not only the physical flow, but the connection rooms have to one another. Tying the rooms together with paint colors or wallpapers that relate to one another is a great way to create a cohesive feeling.

I also think “layering” is a way to add interest and personality to your home. Stack the books, top them with a candle or object with some texture or reflection. Make sure things are not at the same level….vary things. Some high, some low…and then leaving breathing room.

What you shouldn’t do is try or expect that you can decorate a house in a day, a week, a month or even a year. Sure, you can get the basics down, but it takes time to create a home….so enjoy the journey and let it continually evolve.

7. What do you think are the most important features for a kitchen?

I’ve had every size kitchen…large, small and in-between. You can cook a great meal in any size, but there are things that are “nice” to have. In my opinion, a farmhouse sink not only looks great, but just makes doing the dishes so much easier. I also have come to love a really great gas stove. Basically, you need a space with some light and enough counter space to spread out a little.

8. How do you like to dress up a cocktail table and console in a living room?

I think these are great opportunities to use a tray and corral things. Start with a stack of favorite coffee table books – the subjects will give your guests a peek at your interests. Then, layer in candles, objects and either something metal or glass.
Coffee table in my living room – more formal
A bench in my family room…more rustic and informal

 9. Any advice on the subject of lighting?

I love lighting…but I think it pays to mix it up. Recessed lighting is fine if it’s on dimmers. Chandeliers can give heft to a space. Lamps allow you to bring in color and eye level lighting. And, then candles….lots and lots of candles. Everyone looks better in candlelight!

Dining room chandelier…set early in the day for a dinner party
Dining room chandelier..and candlelight (taken just before we sat down).
Some of my favorite new light fixtures are in my boys’ playroom. It still needs some work…so this is definitely “in process”.

10. Have a favorite paint color? Do tell!

My new favorite paint color is Benjamin Moore Edgecomb Gray (HC-173). We recently used this color in my kitchen/family room/mudroom/laundry room to create a cohesive feeling. It is a beige with a tinge of gray…so one of those “greiges”. It is calming, warm and yet gives a little depth.

11. What are a couple of really simple inexpensive things you can do in your home to make it feel “homey” and inviting?

I think some of the things that can make your home feel “homey” and inviting are things you’ve seen above. First….the welcome mat begins at the front door. Make sure your entry is inviting. Pots of flowers, freshly painted front door, update your actual welcome mat. Next, get rid of the clutter and make sure things are straightened up. Sounds simple, but just having things in their place is calming. Finally, fresh flowers and aromatic candles enlist the senses. What I’ve learned is that all the things that make your home enjoyable to others are the very things that make it enjoyable for YOU. So, whether you’re expecting guests are not….have your house “guest ready” and you will enjoy the benefits.

12. Fill in the blank- If money was no object, the very first thing I would buy for my home would be………..

OK…since this is a fantasy, I’m going to go for the very impractical dream idea of a swimming pool. I love the calming affect of water and would love nothing more than to sit by the pool relaxing and have a place for my boys to play. I love being outside when the weather is nice and perhaps winter has gotten the best of me. Umbrella  drinks, anyone?!

Tina, this has been so much fun. I hope you and your readers have enjoyed the tour of my home!!

Told you she was fabulous! I loved learning what goes on in her head behind the process, and thought her advice and pointers were excellent and worth noting/ So agree Elizabeth, about the power of dimmers, gas stoves, candelight,  farmhouse sinks and how much of an impact a welcome mat, flowers and a pretty painted door can have! Love your brown room…so cozy and looove that antelope stair runner! Every one of those wonderful details in her home is so beautifully and thoughtfully done.

I love to brag a little about my various blogging friends that I feature and one area where Elizabeth shines, amongst many others is flowers and entertaining! And you know I too love my flowers…..take a look at some of the wonderful creations she has done over the years in her picture perfect yard, rest assured something beautiful is always blooming over there!

And she always has the best and most chic ideas for party favors, gifts and fun party ideas…..

Hi there…well with spring nearly on our doorstep. At least I think its going to be, barring any “surprises” from mother nature, I must admit I have been doing my fair share of day dreaming of bright blue skies, cool spring breezes, explosions of color from blooming buds and the smell of fresh cut green grass. Sounds good, huh? I cannot wait to steal a few minutes to grab a book, and a cup of coffee or tea and settle into a cozy nook outside and “get away” from everything.Just me, my book and good ol mother nature. It is definitely one of my most anticipated free luxuries, costs nothing but feels like a million bucks!

So imagine this……..your family are all occupied doing their thing for the entire day. All of your chores/calls/emails have been addressed and completed. You are free as a bird. It is 68 degrees absolutely picture perfect. All phones get turned off. The only ring you hear is the sweet chirping of the happy birds doing a little spring dance. You excitedly grab that book you have been waiting to start, brew a fresh cup of coffee, throw on your flip flops and head outside for a few hours of uninterrupted bliss! So…you know the drill, pick your patio setting. Which one beckons to you? I can’t wait to hear…..

Late week musings…..

Hi there! How has your week been? Mine, busy and very productive.  I still am trying to get used to writing down 2013! Anyone else with me here? No small talk, going to delve right into this weeks post. Lots to dish about, so let’s go. Call this my weekly newsletter.  Hope you have a splendid weekend…..

I have not showed much of the extensive landscaping/masonry work that is going on around here. For weeks on end, we have had a nonstop battalion of very talented workers completing much of the  masonry work on the patios/walkways/landscaping. It is still going on but the bulk is just about done. To say we are thrilled with how its turning out is a serious understatement. Now I cannot wait till spring! We have two small patios off of the kitchen/family room/breakfast room that are nearly done, here they are…..

So happy we were able to use the old planters from original home, we have 8 total so this was great

We are going to have a built in BBQ done later in the spring to the side…much more to come soon!

Can you imagine losing your blog one morning? This, for bloggers is the ultimate nightmare.  Twice this past week I read about long term bloggers signing into their account only to find out their entire blogs were wiped out. That’s right..no longer there! Disappeared. Gone. Can you imagine? This freaked me out in a big way. I cannot imagine something I pour so much hard work, love and devotion to leaving me without any notice. That is beyond a bad breakup.
So as I started prowling….it seems the thing to do and likely many of you seasoned bloggers know this is to regularly back up your blog. Did you know this? I found two really easy tutorials and have since done this. Great and priceless advice. Secondly it also really has me thinking maybe a switch to WordPress at some point in the near future is in order…any thoughts on that? Between other less significant problems with blogger and hearing this, I am feeling a bit nervous, hopefully undue stress on my part. So would love to know your thoughts on this matter! Click here if you want to learn how to back up your blog.

I visited my blogging friend, Sharons’ blog, one you all likely know, French Country Home (its like a mini vacation every time you click over there). Anyway one of her posts about having received small baking rounds totally intrigued me and prompted me  that very afternoon to visit Sur La Table, a phenomenal kitchen store (its highly addictive) and to buy my own little versions. I ended up with the cutest 4″ springform pans and came home and got busy. I started with mini Cherry cheesecake and ended with the most delicious potatoes au gratin! And it didn’t stop there…….

The next night we were having friends for drinks then heading to dinner. I was brainstorming about a last minute appetizer to serve, and immediately thought of my heavenly good pesto cheese dip which is normally baked in a Pyrex then spooned onto crostinis. This time I decided to try out my “new little friend’ and lets just say he did not disappoint. The finished product was a perfectly rounded mold of the pesto cheese dip and I garnished with a few tomatoes that had been broiled and served with the costini. Thanks Sharon for unleashing a springform beast in me! I can’t stop thinking of ways to make all of our foods small and round:) My boys think I am seriously possessed. Tonight? Its individual eggplant parmigiana!!! Tomorrow…who knows!

(Don’t love the quality of these pics, taken with iPhone at night but you get the idea)

The innocent little springforms that fueled a cooking marathon with no end in sight!

“The helper” was my wonderful mandolin….love this thing!

Perfectly thin potatoes every time in seconds…….

 My mini cherry cheesecakes…..soooo good!

The heavenly potatoes au gratin…….just so good and looked so pretty!

Roasted chicken asparagus and the mini potato, healthy and pretty!
Coming out of the oven, let them sit a few minutes

My experiment, the pesto dip going in the oven…fingers crossed!

Voila! It worked……added some extra grilled tomato on top.
Added warmed crostinis with a drizzle of olive oil and its instant elegance!

I don’t know about you  but I am already looking forward to spring. Unless we get a serious big dose of the white stuff, I have serious ADD during the winter. If we are going to have to deal with the cold…lets make it pretty. Bring on the snow. I normally do not shop for spring clothes this early but couldn’t  resist these pretty accents that are classic and practically seasonless. So I put together this little mood board of some great recent finds/loves. Best part….some of them, most of them,  are really reasonable. Well not the Prada bag but……most of it:)

One more thing I recently saw and immediately fell in love with, the new spring collection from Tory (yes we are on a first name basis:) LOOOVE these shoes. I want all three!! I cannot possibly narrow it down….they are all so great looking! The flats are a no brainer, as there is not heel height to have to mull over! But the wedges and heels are so darn cute too!

Finally tackling my dining room. Also planning on recovering my breakfast room chairs, I love my Pugsley fabric but its about 10 years old and quite faded so its time for a fresh change. The plaid chairs are temporary and I am excited to have finally made the time to select fabric for the chairs. I am also working simultaneously on the chinoiserie for the dining room and that has me incredibly excited. I will do a whole post on one of my favorite things, chinoiserie soon. . I want to keep it simple because I really want the chinoiserie to shine and not have much competition!  I am going to devote an entire post to the dining room next week, but here’s a sneak peek of the fabrics that have made it to the final round…….

And dining room contenders though its still in the early rounds…I am probably using two fabrics on the chairs

Its always fun to share the results from my Which would you Choose posts. So, I asked you out of 16 designers who you would hand your home to…and here are the top four. Several others vied for a close 5th place..what can I say, you have excellent taste!

1st place John Jacob

2nd place Phoebe Howard
3rd place Mcalpine, Ferrier and Booth
4th place Charles Faudree

I will share the results from this week’s coat edition next week.
I want to have a party with a blue and white theme (naturally) just so I can set a table that looks like this. This picture is enough to get my braincells working overtime just to think of an occasion to recreate this dream of a tablescape! Perfection…the green against the blue and white!

Store biz…so excited about adding this fabulous line of tole hand painted pieces to my online store. I am starting with a few pieces and will gradually add on. They are really special. LOVE them! All pieces will be added to “new arrivals” over the weekend. Feel free to contact me here with any questions.

Adore this black chinoiserie wastepaper basket, so classic!

And looooove these blk. chinoiserie brackets!

Also have this in a cream version which is also stunning!

How about this for a library/office or family room? Yes!

And you know I love this lamp. Already ordered one for my own office:)

In addition to my beautiful French tea//bar towels, that are made in France, just got in greatest looking aprons. I LOVE these. They are so great looking, they are pretty enough to wear  even once your guests have arrived!! Just got added under new additions.

A few new silver items that are new additions to my very popular silver collection…..

 Stunning silver cake plate…14.5″ round
Beautiful scalloped decorative flower bowl/planter

Large decorative ornate tray 28.5″ long by 14.5″ wide…..stunning for serving or display

Wine cooler (holds 4-5 bottles) 14″ round by about 9.5″ tall

And by popular demand I have just added this gorgeous crystal handcut etched dome cake plate/cloche. Talk about adding some serious beauty to your kitchen! And what a gorgeous gift too! Only getting in 6 pieces. Click here to see.

I own this and its a definite jewel in my kitchen.

Some other great things coming this way soon. Just to let you know, I am phasing out of the canvas art. I have about 5-6 pieces left. Unfortunately the vendor is not reliable and the containers often take much longer than initially promised, its too unpredictable, so when these are gone, I will no longer carry the canvas art.

Also my monogrammed linens are going up about 20%, they will still be a bargain even with the price increase. Prices will be going up early next week. As always if you have any questions about any of my products, just email me here!

So that is about it over here in my tiny corner of the world. As always, thanks for stopping by and seeing whats new. Whats going on over there? Any exciting plans for the weekend ahead? Hope whatever you do is wonderful and relaxing…until Monday!

Weekend musings and a giveaway!

Hi there. So how are you are things going in your world? Are you busy yet with the holiday rush? I have to say its really starting to “hit me” and that’s not a bad thing  just the reality and a reminder that its high time to get my gift buying done and wrap up my holiday decorating (which I am well under way with but its a work in progress).  I have been very busy but staying afloat though some days I really feel like I am gasping for air to just manage getting through the day and accomplishing all I set out to do! Lately I have really been burning the midnight oil…….lots to cover here, be back late Monday!

One very exciting thing happening at my house besides the holiday decor getting completed is that our patios/outside masonry work is well underway. Very very happy with how its coming along, so here’s a peek of things in progress, very exciting!

Everything looks prettier on a misty foggy morning, don’t you think?

Lot’s more to come…its still very much a work in progress but getting there!

Sofinally ordering the window treatment for my husbands bath. He has been beyond patient with my ADD, “delay” in getting this done. So here’s the deal, I ordered a beautiful linen blend to do a tailored roman shade, (off white and neutral) and here’s my choice in tapes. This is narrowed down to four, all which go beautifully with the floor. Here’s where you come in,  I  would love your input, which do you like best for his bathroom? Love to hear your opinions!!

Here is the window for the tailored roman shade with a three sided tape……

I would love to invite my readers and fellow bloggers to submit a picture or two of your holiday decor. Please email me with your pictures of your holiday decor!  I LOVE seeing whats going on in your homes and plan to do a post featuring my readers holiday homes around Dec. 20th. So please send in your pictures, up until Dec. 18th, cannot wait to see what you come up with! Here’s a few beautiful pictures from a dear friends home……..so come on now it’s your turn! Email me your pictures to theenchantedhome@gmail.com

Very pretty!

I think I might have to join Christmas decorators anonymous….I am on a kick now and its unstoppable. I am finally getting into the holiday decorating spirit and my approach this year is doing a little bit every day. You have to understand doing this first week of Dec is VERY early for me…..  according to  my calendar I am waaaay ahead of the curve ball people! Here’s a few snaps of the latest, I am going to do a whole post on it next week sometime. (taken with my iPhone so don’t judge)

OK I admit it, I am not a huge red person…..had to switch the bow (put the red plaid in the kitchen for now) I love this mossy green, one of my favorite colors and green and brown go together like caramel and chocolate……….

This is my “blingy” vignette….and I love the way it looks at night….all sparkly and festive

This green bow is just more “me”…..but I do think the red is very pretty, don’t get me wrong!

Yes, I am enjoying the process…now its time to get busy and concentrate on my tree!

Movies…Oh how I love a good movie. And just as I was saying how longs its been since I have seen anything really exceptional…along comes Anna Karenina. Boy, was it AMAZING. I loved it, wanted to jump in and be part of it and never leave (always say I was born in the wrong era) I just didn’t want it to end and just as it was ending, I was reminded that it was 2012, the land of big malls, soccermoms in velour sweatsuits, warehouse shopping, everyone with a techy gadget glued to their ear, it was like waking up from a beautiful dream that you don’t want to end. So yes I recommend it highly especially if you love period films like I do…….

Here’s the trailer…..

And another movie that looks really really good is the theatrical remake of the classic, The Great Gatsby. Leo looks perfect as a modern day Jay, check out the trailer…..love me a good movie season!

Store biz
