Pretty Pink Tulips is like one stop shopping for all things beautiful. Whether she is introducing us to a new artist, a fabulous new line of stationary, updating us on something gorgeous she is doing to her home, offering up a beautiful party favor idea,? or giving us an inside peek into a wonderful event she has attended……it is guaranteed that whatever Elizabeth is talking about, it’s worth the listen! I love her wonderful, effortless, elegant style and so was so happy she is joining us here today.? I really enjoyed seeing all these gorgeous pictures of her home (some new things that most have? not yet seen) and hearing her words of wisdom, so get your pen and paper ready and let Elizabeth take the stage……

?

?

?

1. How long have you been in your present home?? Is this it for the long haul? Anything you would care to change if you could?

?We have lived in this house for 6 years. Even though I love our home, I only see us staying here until our 2 boys are finished with high school. After that, I think I would enjoy downsizing and living somewhere in the South. I kind of feel like I am “caretaking” this house for the next family. Our neighborhood is ideal for young children, so once mine are gone, I think it will be time to leave. Of course, most of my plans have a way of changing….so you never know!
There is a lot I like about this house, but I think the lot is a little odd. It’s a rectangle and the house is situated with yard on the sides and not much in the back. I would love a larger back yard and a larger kitchen. I have “island” envy, since I don’t have one.
?
Luckily, we recently finished a renovation which enabled me to fix many of the things I did want to change. Such as, no covered entry into the house, a teeny tiny laundry room, no mudroom, a lack of a play space for my boys and their friends, peeling siding and a leaky roof!

Our new mudroom

2.?If you could only live in two rooms of your house, which two would?they be?

First, I think I would choose my bedroom because it feels cozy and I can see the tree tops. I find it very calming. ?Second, the kitchen/family room as it is open space where I can cook, work at my desk, the kids can do their homework, we can watch t.v. It is literally in the center of the house and where I begin and end every day.
Master bedroom
Kitchen/Family room
The kitchen, family room is currently undergoing a transition to beach colors…sky, sand and ocean. Here’s a peek at the fabrics I’m using.

3. How would you describe your decorating style?

?I think my style has loosened up since I’ve lived in this house. (Perhaps because I’m raising young boys?!) I used to like things more formal. Now, I’m more interested in comfort and usability. Although, I still like things to look elegant and chic. So….”soothing and sophisticated”, might be a good description. ?My color preferences are also shifting. Less beige and leanings toward gray and greige.

Landing and powder bath outside the new upstairs playroom

4. Do you have a favorite color scheme? What is it?

I find that I consistently like neutral colors for major pieces and then I can add color and texture with my accessories. For example, in the living room the accents are hot pink and chocolate brown.?
Living Room
?I recently wallpapered our center hall with a neutral but busy print. ?I have a tapestry that we bought for the living room of our old home…but it just seemed to be the perfect large scale work of art for our narrow hallway. And, it pulls the colors from each of the rooms that feed into it.
My antelope stair runner is one of my favorite things in the house.

5. Favorite room of your house and why?

My favorite?room is the one we call “the brown room” (because it’s painted a dark brown). It’s a great room for cocktails and conversation or just curling up with a magazine or watching t.v.

6. Best two tips you can give to anyone looking to tackle the decorating of their own home? Best two things to NOT do?

I think one of the most important things to consider is the “flow” of a home. Not only the physical flow, but the connection rooms have to one another. Tying the rooms together with paint colors or wallpapers that relate to one another is a great way to create a cohesive feeling.?

I also think “layering” is a way to add interest and personality to your home. Stack the books, top them with a candle or object with some texture or reflection. Make sure things are not at the same level….vary things. Some high, some low…and then leaving breathing room.

What you shouldn’t do is try or expect that you can decorate a house in a day, a week, a month or even a year. Sure, you can get the basics down, but it takes time to create a home….so enjoy the journey and let it continually evolve.

7. What do you think are the most important features for a kitchen?

I’ve had every size kitchen…large, small and in-between. You can cook a great meal in any size, but there are things that are “nice” to have. In my opinion, a farmhouse sink not only looks great, but just makes doing the dishes so much easier. I also have come to love a really great gas stove. Basically, you need a space with some light and enough counter space to spread out a little.

8. How do you like to dress up a cocktail table and console in a living room?

I think these are great opportunities to use a tray and corral things. Start with a stack of favorite coffee table books – the subjects will give your guests a peek at your interests. Then, layer in candles, objects and either something metal or glass.?

A bench in my family room…more rustic and informal

???
?9. Any advice on the subject of lighting?

I love lighting…but I think it pays to mix it up. Recessed lighting is fine if it’s on dimmers. Chandeliers can give heft to a space. Lamps allow you to bring in color and eye level lighting. And, then candles….lots and lots of candles. Everyone looks better in candlelight!

Dining room chandelier…set early in the day for a dinner party
Dining room chandelier..and candlelight (taken just before we sat down).
Some of my favorite new light fixtures are in my boys’ playroom. It still needs some work…so this is definitely “in process”.?

10. Have a favorite paint color? Do tell!

My new favorite paint color is Benjamin Moore Edgecomb Gray (HC-173). We recently used this color in my kitchen/family room/mudroom/laundry room to create a cohesive feeling. It is a beige with a tinge of gray…so one of those “greiges”. It is calming, warm and yet gives a little depth.

11. What are a couple of really simple inexpensive things you can do in your home to make it?feel “homey” and inviting?

I think some of the things that can make your home feel “homey” and inviting are things you’ve seen above. First….the welcome mat begins at the front door. Make sure your entry is inviting. Pots of flowers, freshly painted front door, update your actual welcome mat. Next, get rid of the clutter and make sure things are straightened up. Sounds simple, but just having things in their place is calming. Finally, fresh flowers and aromatic candles enlist the senses. What I’ve learned is that all the things that make your home enjoyable to others are the very things that make it enjoyable for YOU. So, whether you’re expecting guests are not….have your house “guest ready” and you will enjoy the benefits.

12.?Fill in the blank- If money was no object, the very first thing?I would buy for my home would be………..

OK…since this is a fantasy, I’m going to go for the very impractical dream idea of a swimming pool. I love the calming affect of water and would love nothing more than to sit by the pool relaxing and have a place for my boys to play. I love being outside when the weather is nice and perhaps winter has gotten the best of me. Umbrella ?drinks, anyone?!

Tina, this has been so much fun. I hope you and your readers have enjoyed the tour of my home!!?

?

?

?

?

?

Told you she was fabulous! I loved learning what goes on in her head behind the process, and thought her advice and pointers were excellent and worth noting/ So agree Elizabeth, about the power of dimmers, gas stoves, candelight,? farmhouse sinks and how much of an impact a welcome mat, flowers and a pretty painted door can have! Love your brown room…so cozy and looove that antelope stair runner! Every one of those wonderful details in her home is so beautifully and thoughtfully done.

?

I love to brag a little about my various blogging friends that I feature and one area where Elizabeth shines, amongst many others is flowers and entertaining! And you know I too love my flowers…..take a look at some of the wonderful creations she has done over the years in her picture perfect yard, rest assured something beautiful is always blooming over there!

Bloggers buzz on holiday gifts part II

Hi there! Hope you are doing well. Are you like me and getting really busy with the holiday frenzy?? Ready for another collection of fabulous holiday gift ideas from my super chic blogging friends? Well here’s another superb roundup of awesome gift ideas. I have to say I have gotten so many wonderful ideas. For the first time in years, I am feeling my stress 0′ meter go down…..not up!?

Let’s face it…the holidays are plenty stressful enough without the added pressure of gift giving pressure. I love all these ideas, so many unique ones, and something for everyone. Thank you ladies for your fabulous ideas! So let’s get started, ladies take it away………..

?

Vicki from French Essence says…..
?Holiday Gift Ideas from French Essence?
Choosing gifts is such a pleasure? thinking of ideas, sourcing them and then
finding that perfect match. That is the best part? knowing that your gift is going
to please your special person. I love watching the un-wrapping? the guessing as
the parcel is prodded and poked? It?s all part of the art of giving?

I don?t believe that some are ?impossible? to buy for or that others ?have
everything?? the art of giving means not being defeated, sometimes thinking
outside of the box or oftentimes just keeping it simple.

When I think of a special gift, I think about what I would love to receive, an
indulgence that I might not buy for myself? something that would make me
smile and make me feel spoilt? a Cire Trudon candle is perfect. My preferred
scent is Odalisque? a blend of orange blossom, lemon and vanilla. I like a gift to
be long lasting and to evoke memories? this is a scent that does just that.
My other most loved gifts are books? nothing makes me happier? and I always
want to give as I would like to receive?

Here are our two favorite gift items this holiday season from our e-commerce site www.DianeJamesHome.com.

? Our mother raised us with a tradition of never arriving empty-handed to holiday parties and that?s one of the reasons why we added a range of beautiful botanically inspired gifts to our collection of faux florals on Diane James Home.? It was hard to pick two of our favorite holiday hostess gifts but given that we?ve just introduced our new Winter scent candle made by Seda France, we had to include it!? And why not pair it with a lovely set of French-milled soaps, presented in a festive red box ready for gift giving (or re-gifting, if need be.)? Both gifts are sure to please!

Kathysue from Good life of Design says…..

I love to give themed gifts. For some reason it helps me narrow down my choices. In the past I have chosen a monogrammed theme for gifts.

I try to get the beautiful towels that are on Neiman Marcus?s pink sale every year?.

You will get two sets of three pieces for $58, this is a real bargain. Plus, you can have them monogrammed.?

I have personally purchased these towels as gifts, and for my own personal use. Many of my friends have done the same!
If you like the option of a colored towel, and a colored monogram these are the towels for you. Only $12 for a bath towel.

?I usually purchase the white with a sand monogram for myself, but have purchased other colors for gifts.

Gift #2
The next theme gift I love to give is dinner related! I love to purchase nice plain white serving pieces from Crate and Barrel just go HERE!??.
I add this fun gift to the serving pieces. It is called Destination Dinners. You can go to their website by clicking on their name below the image?..
You can choose a dinner kit from any of the following destinations for $30:

I round it all out with monogrammed napkins from Pottery barn?..

These are just a couple of themed gifts you can give. I bet if you think about it from this point of view you will come up with your own ideas!!?

Happy Gift Giving,
Kathysue

Luciane of Home Bunch says…..

Happy Holiday shopping, everyone!

Pick #1:
I have three small children and I’m always trying to make our home feels like a home for every and each member of our family. I like my kids to feel welcomed in every room, but I like to dedicate certain places exclusively to them. I think it’s really important for our kids to have a place where they feel completely free to create, play and learn.
When I saw these children plates I immediately thought how neat would be to have them hung in a playroom. These alphabet plates are adorable and I’m sure any kid would enjoy seeing them!

Aren’t they cute? The set for a mug and plate costs $26.00 and you can find them here.

?

Pick #2:

Maybe this Christmas we should do more than opening our wallets, maybe instead, we should open our eyes to see what the person next to one need.
We all get incredibly busy at this time of the year, we all try to send cards to all of friends and family and we’re running from store to store with a huge list on hands, but is it all we can do? Is it all we can give? Perhaps, we can do more, perhaps we should do better.
What about actually being the gift for someone this Christmas? Look around, you can help in so many ways and that’s a gift! Visit a neighbor you know could use of some help with the kids, or an elder person who needs help. You can do simple things, such as wrapping gifts or cooking some meals for the Holidays.
Offer help, be there and put a smile on someone’s face.
The best gifts in life are usually priceless and comes from the heart, instead of a shelf.

?

Happy Holidays!
Luciane

Elizabeth of Pretty Pink Tulips says…..

I am always on the look out, year round, for special items that would make a fabulous gift, so I was thrilled that Tina invited me to share a couple of picks with her lovely readers. I love to give things that will be savored, enjoyed and used. Personalized items are always a favorite of mine, but that doesn’t necessarily mean a monogram. My first holiday gift pick is the exquisite new book, Flowers, by Carolyne Roehm.?
The book was a true labor of love, as Carolyne created all of the floral arrangements and photographed them herself. If you know someone how lives for their garden, a gorgeous flower arrangement or just loves a fabulous coffee table book…this is the one for the season! The most cost effective way to purchase her book is via amazon.com, but you can also visit her website, www.carolyneroehm.com to have her personalize the book for your recipient.

My next gift pick is something I have and use on a daily basis. The Russell + Hazel Tassel Key Chain is just a fun thing to give and receive. The personalization comes in choosing the perfect color. Mine is white and is easy to find in the bottom of my handbags. ?Available at?zhush.com

Whatever you choose to give, remember the presentation is part of the gift!
xoxo Elizabeth

Thanks ladies! This is like the gift giving jackpot. So? many unique ideas, this is the beauty of having such talented blogging friends……wonderful ideas are always being generated and? of course the perk is getting to share them with you all. I am for once excited about my gift giving…how about you? Thanks again ladies and thank you everyone for stopping in….ho ho ho!

My first gift choice this holiday season is this navy pom pom throw from Serena and Lily. I recently partnered with Serena and Lily and received this gorgeous substantial throw from them and all I can say is everyone needs one! I am looking forward to sitting by a  fireplace wrapped up in this ultra cozy high designer throw while sipping a delicious latte. Serena and Lily states on their website…that this throw is an understated design element. I totally agree!
My second gift choice this holiday season is that adorable iPad Mini. This great little device is every inch the iPad has everything that you love about it! Including a beautiful screen, fast fluid performance, and thousands of amazing apps to enjoy. You can choose to have cellular service on it and different capacities. The best part is that it can fit in one hand!

Plus, you can have them monogrammed.

I have personally purchased these towels as gifts, and for my own personal use. Many of my friends have done the same!
If you like the option of a colored towel, and a colored monogram these are the towels for you. Only $12 for a bath towel.

I usually purchase the white with a sand monogram for myself, but have purchased other colors for gifts.

I bet if you think about it from this point of view you will come up with your own ideas!!

My first holiday gift pick is the exquisite new book, Flowers, by Carolyne Roehm.

Available at zhush.com

Whatever you choose to give, remember the presentation is part of the gift!
xoxo Elizabeth

I am for once excited about my gift giving…how about you? Thanks again ladies and thank you everyone for stopping in….ho ho ho!

Hi everyone! I’ve had so much fun imagining my perfect summer day for Tina’s series. To me, there’s just nothing that beats the ocean, so that’s where you’ll find me!

My perfect summer day would start at this time of the morning (or afternoon)…..
7 am because it is when I naturally wake up

The bedroom I wake up in would look something like this……

And my bathroom like this…….

A favorite beauty product I love to use during the summer……..
an oldie but goodie

And this is an ideal summer outfit that you might find me frolicking in…….a maxi dress

My view from my bedroom in the summer looks like this……

And of course this perfect summer day is located in………..
Cabo San Lucas at Las Ventanas

After I am showered, fed and revved up to start my day, I will…….Exercise first thing to get it done. Then, put on my bathing suit & coverup (always the cover up!) and relax poolside with a stack of magazines and books.

For lunch this is my absolute favorite summertime meal……

An afternoon snack might comprise of……..almonds. I love crunchy snacks!

My afternoon activity would be………Relaxing at the spa with a massage and facial

The ideal summer drink is……..
Club soda with lime before 5pm, then some rose champagne

This is what would be served for my ideal summer dinner……

And where I eat it might look like this…………….

A perfect summer ending to a perfect summer day would end……….outside, under the stars, by the pool and a fire

The best part of my summer day is………..Relaxing in the sun, looking out over the ocean

Thank you, Tina, for allowing me to indulge in a virtual fantasy escape. Now, I want to plan a trip like this for real!
Talk about dreaming…..please tell me that I can tag along, this is beyond dreamy OR how about a bloggers conference inspired by this perfect summer day! See, told you Elizabeth would hit a home run and boy, did she deliver.  Love it all from that dreamy ocean view and her  bedroom right down to her “back yard”! Then, ending the day just gazing out at the sea, feeling relaxed and sun kissed is perfection.  Crunchy snacks? Bring them on! Doesn’t get better than this does it!  Thank you Elizabeth for such a fantasy like post that has me dreaming too and for everyone for stopping in. Want more Elizabeth?  Stop on over to Pretty Pink Tulips and tell her how much you enjoyed this! Wishing everyone a perfect summer day of their own:)

Enchanted guest #2….say hi to Elizabeth from Pretty Pink Tulips! And 3 winners!

Good morning, so happy to bring you yet another wonderful enchanted guest, say hi to Elizabeth from Pretty Pink Tulips. Another favorite and daily stop for me, Pretty Pink Tulips is one stop shopping for all things beautiful and elegant on everything from interior design to chic entertaining to floral design.  So am happy to have her here today to have her share with us her ideas on holiday hostess gifts, her elegant style was a perfect choice! Thank you Elizabeth and take it away………….
The Christmas tree, wreath and garland winners are announced at end of this post!
I’m so excited that Tina invited me over to The Enchanted Home today to share some ideas for holiday hostess gifts.

The only thing better than being invited to someone’s home for a special holiday gathering is finding the perfect gift that will show them how much you appreciated the invitation!

Though time does not always allow, I try to do something personalized for my hosts. One of my favorites was this acrylic bowl by La Plates. I filled it with popcorn and seasonings for a holiday movie night, but it can easily be used by the pool for the 4th of July!

For another friend, I created a monogrammed set of cocktail napkins. I loved this oversized circle monogram.

Hands down, my favorite scent of the season, is the Nest Holiday candle. Dress it up with an ornament tied on with ribbon and you are ready with a “hostess pleasing” gift in minutes. (Just be sure and buy one for yourself because these smell amazing!)

Eleni’s Cookies are a sweet treat, especially if there are children in the home. They are a nut-free environment, so safe for those with nut allergies.

Finally, one of the most elegant hostess gifts is a beautiful orchid. Wrap it up in cellophane and tie on a holiday ribbon. Your host will get months of enjoyment out of it and I have found well priced ones at Home Depot or Whole Foods.

The most important thing about a hostess gift is that it doesn’t need to be expensive, just thoughtful. And, by all means, if you are known for your homemade gingerbread or jams, wrap that up and know that your hostess will appreciate the time you took to prepare a gift with love.

Here’s to celebrating with friends and family! Happy holidays, everyone!

Thank you Elizabeth! See I told you she would deliver! And I am in love with every one of your choices, YES to monograms and a double yes for orchids!! You can come on over anytime!  Perfect gifts indeed. If you are not already familiar with Pretty Pink Tulips, you must stop by and check out her fabulous blog! Click here to visit.
