Late week random musings……

Hello. Hope you are having a great week, mine was spiffy and so busy (the steals and deals kept me on my toes all week)…..so crazy how everywhere I turn I am seeing something having to do with Thanksgiving or Christmas! It feels like suddenly the accelerator has been pressed and things are in fast forward…..I almost get dizzy thinking of what needs to get done but am determined to hopefully wrap it all up by the first week of December, because normally mid December I am ready and quite eligible for the local asylum:) All that aside, I DO love the holidays and all that goes along with it, giving, the foods, the weather, the decorating, wrapping gifts, holiday clothes, etc…….but I like when I can really savor and enjoy it, and that only happens when I am organized and stay on task so today is not a day too soon to start the planning!

Before I get started I announced the winner of the mega jackpot skincare from Avery Graham. Unfortunately the winner has not stepped up so I am giving it one more shot. If I have not heard back by Sunday morning, a new winner will be chosen. So Debra….time is ticking! Step right up to claim your prize!

Pink Opulance, opulence eye cream as well as the eye make-up remover that would be a good start to get me on track!
Thanks for the giveaway and insightful information

Anywho, moving along here is what’s new in my world……(all pics taken with iPhone as my camera was not charged)

MY HOUSE. I have some projects in the works. Got my first strikeoff for the dining room of the chinoiserie and while it’s definitely not right it does affirm my decision that this is the way to go and once we get the colors down, its going to be nothing short of spectacular. SO we are back to round 2 and think we are a lot closer now in terms of the colors we are using…cannot wait and of course will share! It is a definite labor of love but oh so worth it!

The large sample though way too yellow…love the pattern, let the tweaking begin!

Another smaller sample from long ago, as you can see the background is way off from the rug but you have to start somewhere!

So my trusty little Benjamin Moore color cards have been making many visits to the dining room!

And at long last, I have chosen colors for the next sample……fingers crossed!

My bedroom is also finally coming together.  Used this gorgeous cream and blue silk for my closet/sitting area and was waiting till it went up to decided if I would use it for the bedroom and indeed I am, I just love it. Its so soft and pretty and quiet just as I wanted it to be. I have been working hard to find carpeting, its a very large space so the challenge ironically hasnt’ been finding a carpet I like but finding one they have enough of. I have found the mills do not stock carpet the way they used to…sign of the times. So this is the one I can get the most of, it will mean not putting carpeting in my closet and small office, but having it in the sitting area and bedroom which really are most important anyway. So think this is the one and about to pull the trigger…woo hoo!

It all started with this gorgeous paper from Stark (now discontinued, but available by custom order)

So after months and months of thinking and looking (more thinking than looking) I found a carpet with just the right cream and just the right soft dusty blue

And went back to the original trim from Clarence House that I am madly in love with!

And the gorgeous cream and blue silk…….
 Carpeting
Ready to see the fabric in my sitting room/closet? Love it!

Pay zero attention the that chair (my first big girl purchase at 22 from Century) still a great chair but am going to reupholster it and the tattered Scalamandre pillow (20 years and going strong) but wrong colors, etc……

Another carpet that was lovely from Stark but it was too green, not blue enough…..

Still love this linen, will do some pillows or something in this for sure

Amazing how often we go back to our original choices…..that was the case with me and I am thrilled.

A GREAT FILM. I like movies of all kinds and I watched one somewhat documentary called “Red Obsession” which is about the soaring prices and unparallelled demand for the famed Bordeaux wines, and of course who is their number one consumer? The Chinese….it is totally fascinating and if this remotely interests you then I would highly recommend it. I know its available on Movies on Demand and I believe Netflix. Here is a sneak peek…..

GREENWICH, CT. I love this place! 15 years ago we had a deal on a house there that turned out to have some serious structural issues and we looked at it as a chance to reconsider and ended up staying on Long Island closer to family. However many many times I have thought and still think this is one of most beautiful places to live. I love Greenwich and if you ever the chance to visit, you absolutely should!! Went to a great restaurant Harvest (thanks Sandy from You may be wandering)  where I had the best shaved Brussels sprouts salad EVER. Then we went into some of our favorite shops including Rinfret (always a fave), here is a recap……

Yes it really was THAT good!!!!!!!

Isn’t this charming? I couldn’t resist taking pictures, they always do such a beautiful job…..

Saw this beautiful very large ginger jar at Two’s Company and my blue and white radar went on high alert!

These next photos are all from Rinfret, which is all decked out for the holidays, its was so festive and beautiful……

GOOD FOOD. You know this is a favorite subject of mine! So two things to talk about. The first I was inspired to find, after eating that out of this world brussels sprout salad and I found one that seems to be very very close from The Divine Addiction. I am trying it this week and will let you know. In case you are interested…..click here for recipe.

Second one is something I tried and LOVED. Worth sharing…trust me on this. One subject I consider myself to be an expert on is food:) If you like puff pastry, mushrooms and Gruyere then you must give this a shot (I also add Parmesan) You can make one big one or cut them into squares as appetizers…..yum! Click here for recipe.

AN INTERESTING VIDEO. You might have thought of this, maybe not. What kind of mother are you? How would you describe yourself as a mother to your kids? How do you think your kids might describe you? This video is worth a look, it is so telling and so touching and makes me wonder how my kids would answer it. Really got me thinking.  Click here to see.

BABY LIGHT MY FIRE. This is for lovely Anita of Castles Crowns and Cottages. She had asked if we had lit the fireplace outside and if we did to please share a picture. Well Anita, this ones for you……wish you were here to enjoy a cup of hot chocolate with me!

NEW CONTEST! The blue and white love was such a huge success that I am continuing on with another contest. The new theme is “Hooray for the Holidays“. I am accepting pictures for anything having to do with the holidays (Halloween, Thanksgiving or Christmas) up until Dec. 4th. I will run the contest through Dec. 8th and announce a winner on Monday, Dec.9th.

No rules…however you interpret “Hooray for the Holidays”. Could be a favorite meal, your home all decked out, your Thanksgiving table, a pet or child showing their spirit, etc…..I know I am in for a treat, your talents and inspirations always blow me away. Same rules, two pictures per entrant, you must put Hooray for the Holidays in the subject line of your email (I get a ton of email and dont’ want it lost in the shuffle).

Email me your pictures to theenchantedhome@gmail.com. Thank in advance for entering, you have a little over 2 weeks to send them in! I will also hold a Christmas themed contest in early Jan so get those cameras ready! Some ideas…..

SHOP NEWS. I have been really busy with my little shop. I was excited to help someone with 20 ginger jars for her daughters wedding, she promised to send pictures, I can’t wait! I also have some lighting that was custom done that went in which I will also share. I love nothing more than when customers send me pictures of their completed projects.

I am going to be doing a post in the next week  about various holiday gifts/promotions in  my shop as well as deadlines, because time is ticking!  I am also going to “close shop” for about a week before Christmas. The last day to place orders will be Dec. 14th until after Christmas. In the upcoming post I will also let you know about deadlines for things like monogrammed items, custom napkin rings,etc…..

On my recent steals and deals, I really hit the jackpot. I was lucky enough to have bought a large lot of truly exquisite items from a manufacturer who is restructuring and moving down south. His loss is my gain (and yours)! I have sold the bulk of it but still have about 10-12 boxes to unpack so who knows what’s in them! It’s like a treasure hunt with guaranteed treasure:) I am trying to move through them quickly to ideally get everything up, sold and shipped before Thanksgiving. I will post the newest finds sometime next week……

FINALLY,  as much fun as it is to talk about the fluff and fun of the things we love most……I must speak about the horrific events happening in the Philippines. The devastation is truly unimaginable. My heart breaks for all those affected. The rebuilding effort is going to take a very long time. But right now the focus is on the people and treating the hundreds of thousands who are injured, without food and water, shelter…people who have lost their families and everything they ever owned.
I always like to to help out in whatever small way I can, my only requirement is I want to know my donation is going 100% to the actual relief effort and not to cover administration coats!

http://www.directrelief.org/

I have given through AmeriCares  (who is also a non profit and a wonderful organization too) and thanks to Emily of Splendid Market, I also found out about Direct Relief, whose mission as a non profit organization is to provide medical relief around the world. That is the main focus for the many victims of Typhoon Haiyan. Click here to find out more about them. There is no amount too small, every dollar can make a difference. I hope you will consider donating.

Thanks so much for stopping in and I hope you have a wonderful and productive day! I enjoyed putting this post together and really enjoyed being all over the map with my random musings…missed these posts! I think the theme for November (for me at least) will be productivity. I want to get as much done before the Christmas crunch this month as I possibly can. Is there such thing as a relaxing December? Hummmmmm……..I will get back to you on that:)

It’s all Greek to me!

Hello there! I have developed a serious Greek key crush. I am not sure how or when it started, but Mary as in Mary McDonald just might have something to do with that:) I love her style and abundant use of this very classic and elegant design motif. I have found myself drawn to many things featuring the Greek Key, and have purchased trim recently for pillows for both my living room and my bedroom. I am on a bit of a “Greek key” kick. How about you? Like it as well?

Today, a post all about how fabulous this motif looks in a variety of settings and styles. Whether in a traditional or modern home or something in between, it just works!  I have to say it’s such an elegant, clean and beautiful look….I think its here to stay! Hope you enjoy……..

When hurricanes are a good thing….and a giveaway!

A reminder to stop on over at Art by Karena to see the feature she has on my online shop and to be eligible for a wonderful giveaway…….click here to visit!

Hope you are well…..last night we got to see Paul Simon perform (got there late but boy is his voice amazing)! It was a fundraiser at the beautiful Plaza Hotel, I must say I love any kind of political events because you get there early and leave early (sounding like an old lady or what)? The Plaza though it looked beautiful has changed so much…kind of sad to see an iconic hotel lose some of its lustre. The famed Oak Bar gone. After a well reported fight with rental agents and new tenants. But seriously Paul Simon’s voice is so beautiful……really natural and smooth. La la la la  li……

Yes I mean hurricane lanterns not the storms:) I loooove hurricanes and have several pair and believe you can never have too many, case in point would be one look around my own home, on my dining room table, console tables, out on the patio, in my living room……they are everywhere! So after popular demand, I am now carrying the gorgeous ones I have abundantly in my own home on my online shop! When trying to to put together a vignette, a single or pair of hurricanes is a great place to start. They give height, texture, and lets not underestimate the beautiful lighting they give off when they are lit with candles. In addition they double as flower vases and great seasonal decorative objects, which can be filled with fall leaves, acorns, pinecones and seashells. Yes….hurricanes are a good thing!

Today I am featuring many different interiors that show you how beautiful hurricanes look in virtually any kind of room, in almost any setting. Do you like the look?
Now let’s take a look at  hurricanes in action, shall we…….

Here they are on my coffee table flaking a large planter, love the delicate etching!

A large single oversized hurricane on a coffee table always works,  Ralph Lauren

Stunning vignette of a cluster of hurricanes……just gorgeous! Good Life of Design

Stunning oversized glass hurricanes grace this stunning island home of Hilary and  Galen Weston, AD

Definitely always perfect for a dining table, not to mention the soft lighting at night is unbeatable! My home

A beautiful wicker pair adorn this gorgeous table in this coastal setting, House to home

A single oversized hurricane on a piano is a beautiful statement, Rinfret

Even for more casual/coastal homes…hurricanes can be found in more coastal themed materials….

Love them for the outdoors and have several myself……

Love the scale that these add to the dining room, Cathy Kincaid

Another pair of the cut crystal perfect for a coffee table vignette, my home

Love the look of staggered heights for a dramatic outdoor setting!

Love a huge hurricane on a coffee table, Ralph Lauren

A beautiful amber colored pair add height and beauty to this gorgeous setting, Rinfret

Here they are on an outdoor table, as pretty during the day as they are at night, my home

Love them in clusters on a large scale dining table or console table..they have a lot of impact!

Once again, another gorgeous dining area that has a pair of pretty hurricanes, Sandra Nunnerly

My own hurricanes being put to good use!

Ralph Laurens own dining room….of course he gets it!

Adding a few different styles and heights of hurricanes can make for a gorgeous vignette, Pottery Barn

Perched atop a fireplace mantle always works, my home
And they work beautifully on a console table as seen here in this pretty living room!

This is so dramatic! I love a lined path for a party with large oversized hurricanes and floating candles, gorgeous! Dazzle me decor

The lighting of hurricanes outside at night is pure magic, RH

I always like the idea of going oversized when deciding on a size…..

Beautiful for any outdoor setting, and I love the soft glow they give at night…….

Again here is a perfect example of how very large ones always work….always go up in size! Inspired Living

Hurricanes double as a beautiful floral vase!

Beautiful fall leaves for a fall vibe

 Seashells for a coastal theme

 Adding greenery or mini apples

Beautiful pair flanking a dining table, Ralph Lauren

Always works for an end table as both a lighting source and  a decorative object

A very large hurricane looks great on the ground…love this setting, COZY!

Flanking a sofa on our outside loggia, they offer the perfect soft lighting, my home

Like the look? For me they are “no fail”. There is always a place that can use a pair of hurricanes and frankly they are just an instant way to add something special to any area that is “lacking”.  I am so excited to be offering these beautiful pieces, they are all hand cut/hand etched and truly exquisite.  Check out the newest additions….these are now on my online shop under arrivals (scroll to bottom)  and  of course if there is something you want to ask,   feel free to email me by clicking here. Here we go……

As always love to hear what you have to say. Thanks for stopping in and wishing you a great day.

La la la la? li……

Building a blue and white collection…..and a blue and white giveaway!

Forewarning you are entering a serious blue and white zone…don’t say I didn’t warn you!

I am so flattered that some consider me a blue and white expert:) Thanks for your confidence and faith in my blue and white abilities. One thing is to be sure, I do love it and am in constant awe of its transformative abilities:) One thing I get asked a lot is tips on how to curate or build a blue and white collection. So, as I prepared to answer several of these emails I figured there are probably a bunch of other blue and white enthusiasts out there who might be wanting to know the same thing, hence this post. Lets delve right in…..

Blue and white giveaway details on bottom

Buy what you love. Yes, I know cliche that it is..it is true! When we really buy what we truly love, we enjoy it more, make more of an effort to find just the right spot, tend to think of more creative ways to reinvent the said item even when we have had it a long time. and because the initial emotion you felt when buying what you love is typically one of admiration and love, chances are high you will always love what you create, take it from me!

Could it get any prettier! I Love the idea of a pair of ginger jars on either end and a bunch of small decorative objects in the center. Then a basket was added on the bottom with another pair of jars, it works! Lonny

Case in point, nothing “matches” here but oh how beautiful it is!

Proof that there is no such thing as too much blue and white! I love the idea of the blue and white on brackets, a big bowl in center of console, and two large lidded ginger jars on floor, gorgeous! John Bossard

This arrangement is one of my personal faves, a pretty jar or vase that can use for flower display and a pair of ginger jars on the bottom of the console, Ashely Whittaker
Love this large scaled console filled with blue and white beauties! Oscar de la Renta
I really like this arrangement for a console on a stair landing. I also love the idea of adding the cherry blossoms and am fact doing this myself, Lonny
This stunning vignette is a picture sent in by a reader who used my small blue and white ormolu box alongside other pretty blue and white and a pretty cherub statue
Displaying blue and whites on brackets is a wonderful way to show off your collection! Elle Decor

My own table set for a very small luncheon, I mixed the styles, sizes and shades of blue, and just added lots of beautiful spring flowers!

I also like seeing jars and blue and whites displayed  on a console in different shapes, and think a display plate on an easel is always a nice way to change things up

Love the way William Eubanks used an elegant pair of chunky ginger jars on a dining room console which I think always works beautifully

Shannon Bowers kept a theme going here, a grouping of different shapes and sizes but all with the Chinese letter motif

Rinfret chose a cluster of blue and whites for this elegant center hall table

Nancy Corzine chose to use a cluster of blue and whites on this center table in this beautiful room

Love the idea of various plates being used on this coffee table and a jar collection being displayed on brackets, Vogue

I love the way Leta Austin Foster used ginger jars in the upper portion of these gorgeous French doors and used a large plate as the top for a small end table

A perfect  way to show you the versatility of a beautiful tureen!

Absolutely love the garden seat and large ginger jars displayed as a beautiful arrangement on the floor paired near the sofa, HB

A console vignette in my own home……

Another favorite look, a big cluster of different shaped jars and containers of varying heights and colors…..very eye catching and makes for such an interesting vignette atop an armoire

The idea of three different shapes/colors on a center table is always very effective and so easy to do. J Tribble

Bunny Williams got it right when she decorated a mantle with a batch of handsome large scaled ginger jars, in varying patterns and shades of blue

Here is my own kitchen island, an example of mixing new and old. The big bowl is antique blue and white and the planters are from my online shop….yet they work beautifully together!

Fabulous collection of assorted shapes and sizes, love the idea of lamps too!

Love blue and white with a pop of color mixed in….so beautiful! Lonny

I always have lots of blue and white on my island…constantly mixing and matching

Adore this room. William Eubanks used a blue and white collection to perfection, different objects, from plates and small jars to large lidded ginger jars, and planters……they are used randomly through the room and the effect is spectacular!

Some of my own reflections on building a collection-

Start with a pair of good sized (18′ and up) chunky ginger jars. Ideally ones that have an antique finish.

Do not be afraid to change it up. One thing I am not a fan of is a cluster or collection of blue and whites where everything is the same color, shade variation, shape and/or style. Make it interesting and uniquely yours by changing up shapes, colors and depths of blues, styles and heights.

Do not focus on only ginger jars, add a big bowl,  a pair of candlesticks,  a pair of lamps, maybe a blue and white bracket, a pair of blue and white porcelain brackets

Do not think a tureen is only for a dining table! This actually is quite a versatile piece that can double as a planter as I used above. It is like a two for one!

A pair of blue and white Staffordshire dogs is a fun way to bring in animals without it being “cutesy”, they are actually very sophisticated

Anchoring a vignette with a chunky pair of ginger jars is a no brainer way to starting a great setup. Then you fill in, in the middle with various odds and ends, different shapes, colors and sizes

Ginger jars are also wonderful under a console table and atop a large armoire or perched on top  of kitchen cabinetry

Do not buy a piece ONLY because its on sale and a good deal (actually this applies to everything) buy it first and foremost because you love it!

Clusters are a very effective way to instantly creating an elegant vignette. Sometimes you get it right the first go around, other times you need to experiment several times, switch things out, don’t be afraid to play around until you absolutely love it!

I have helped many create blue and white vignettes as well as help others their own collection. Below are some great starting pieces….
.

And for a more transitional space, you could even take a more modern bookcase/curio cabinet and convert it to a virtual blue and white shrine!

And a recap on some of the many blue and white pieces in my own online store collection….click here to visit my porcelain shop online. Please note a price increase will be taking effect by this weekend on many but not all. (mostly ginger jars and decorative containers). My vendor(s) have raised their prices so I unfortunately need to as well, but its a moderate price increase.

Well if this doesn’t  have you dreaming in blue and white…don’t know what will! For blue and white lovers like myself, its a deliberate “affliction”  and I am rather relieved there’s no cure in sight! What are your thoughts and tips on collection blue and white? Do you? Have you used blue and white? Are you already a member of the BAWA club (come on you know….blue and white anonymous club)! Do tell……

And finally to launch your own blue and white collection, I am going to give away this beautiful blue and white flower vase/container. Perfect alone or filled with your favorite flowers, this is a beautiful way to start your own blue and white vignette. Just visit my online porcelains here and come back here to tell me your favorite blue and white piece, that’s it!

I will announce a lucky winner on Saturday! Good luck.

Wishing everyone a fabulous day!
