Rugs…….who doesn’t love a rug? The term “magic carpet” is no joke….they truly have the ability to add a little magic to a room. The perfect way to start with any room, the carpet is often the foundation on which a room is built/created. It is often the very inspiration for how the room evolves and in virtually any project i have been involved with, under ideal circumstances, we have begun with the rug.
When you take them out of a room the room suddenly looks a little naked, don’t you think? The beauty of rugs is that with the vast array of styles and colors (and prices), there is truly something out there….. for every possible style, modern and sleek to traditional and old world, fresh and crisp to nautical and charming…..today in conjunction with this amazing giveaway, lets take a look at some rooms that have successfully used the rug to pull the room together. What do you think? Are you a rug lover too?

Which would you choose?

Good morning all! OK this is a really fun “Which would you choose” and I am dying to know which house you will end up choosing. Imagine this…….you have just been given a “beach house” by a relative. OK, a very rich relative who is unloading all of his things, lets just say for arguments sake he has decided to forgo a high maintenance lifestyle and spend the rest of his years sailing around the world on his 70 foot sailboat. Hey….. his loss is your gain. So…the beach house needs a little work, or maybe a lot of work. It hasn’t been used in years. Best part…it gets to be on any beach or island community your little heart deserves! Fast forward, a designer of your choosing has swooped in, worked their magic and voila the perfect beach house is yours for the taking! So……this is where you come in. Choose your beach house! Which will it be?

Whoa, that is what I call some serious beach house beauty, right there!! I am so torn but think, I have it narrowed down to two. I keep going back up and down…..all have something fabulous! Cannot wait to hear which you choose. Now if only that sailboat loving, rich, generous uncle would magically appear! Enjoy your day!
PS Many of you have asked about the house, I am going to try to prepare a small update post for Sat. or Sunday. Working on it, we are chugging along….slowly but in the right direction!

Spaces that wow Part II

Good morning! As promised in Spaces that wow part I, I promised I would be back with a followup of yet another roundup of fabulous spaces so here is part II. Certainly not playing second fiddle to the part I, this post is chock full of breathtaking spaces, the kind that just make you say “wow”! What do you think it is about a room that gives us this reaction”? Well to me, its not necessarily a particular style because as you can see below, I have shown many different styles of rooms, from more contemporary to very traditional, outdoor spaces to formal over the top living rooms. Its just the way it comes together, every little inch has been carefully addressed to create a very cohesive pulled together effect that culminates in a result that just impresses beyond the normal “pretty room” statement. I think an entire home of such rooms could be too much but having a room or two of such a room is pretty special. What do you think makes a “wow” room? Lighting certainly plays a big part, the scale of the room, celing height can add a lot of drama, architectural elements, moldings, window casings, flooring, leaded windows, window sests,etc…..then you move onto furniture and the sky is the limit! Colors, textures, patterns, shapes, sizes, where do you stop?  As you can see the way it is all brought together is what creates that “wow” factor. Do you have a favorite? Take a look……

This dining room with the beautiful gilded chinoiserie is a wow room to me, Jan Showers
Gorgeous kitchen accented  with elegant blues and white, Downsview
Always loved this gorgeous dramatic “wow” powder room by Ashley Goforth
Mario Buatta’s rooms always tend to “wow”
Fabulously grand foyer ala William Eubanks
The breathtaking loggia and infinity pool overlooking the Pacific Ocean over at “Chers place”
Love this kitchen space…..so elegant yet livable…Miles Redd
Grand entrances are made here, Richard Landry
Chers “fit for a king” baronial dining room
Mary Nichols designed this unbelievable home hugging the California cliffs overlooking the Pacific!
Opulent library designed by Michael S. Smith
Fabulous dressing room/bathroom, Candy and Candy
Stunner of a kitchen, by Jean Randazzo
Lots of pattern, but it works and its very exciting! Sherill Canet
The famous Kluge Dining room
Fabulous in all its European beauty, NH Design
Always loved this master bedroom sitting area, Jean Randazzo
The entrance to the Bvlgari Suite at a St. Regis hotel
Beautiful rich colors come together to create this gorgeous jewel of a room, Miles Redd
To me this is the epitome of elegance in a master bath, Nancy Boszhardt Inc
Drama overload, Arch Digest
Susan Lovell created this sumptuous ladies suite in Manhattan, talk about having the “wow” factor!
This two story library/family room certainly wows! Jonathan Wallen photography
Thats right, you are looking at an outdoor movie theater! Val Selleck
I love this bathroom..old fashioned feeling yet feminine and gorgeous! Mary McDonald
Beautiful in neutral…Richard Hallberg and Barbara Wisely
Views don’t get much better than this! Helen Ziman
Check out those amazing inlaid floors!! Archdeco
Peter Roy Bowman designed this fabulous Mexican dining room open to this terrace
Love the color, the clean lines and the gorgeousness! Jay Jeffers
Luxury bath by Marjorie Shushan
Just love how the colors seem to melt into one another here….stunning!
Dramatic high in the sky foyer designed by MAC II
Jonathan Berger’s foyer in his own townhouse..fabulous!
Fabulous dreamy terrace overlooking the NYC skyline….I could imagine having a sunset dinner here! Arch Digest
Love the old world ambiance created by Penelope Bianchi
Not a bad view to have to wake up to, Jennifer Post
Suzanne Rheinstein decorated this fabulous ladies sitting room/office in soft beiges
Gorgeous soaring ceilings of brick, woods and iron are fabulous….Fern Santini
This terrace in Hawaii by Donald Botsai overlooking the Pacific is dreamy!
Fabulous decadent neutral suite swathed in luxury, Candy and Candy

Love this calming gorgeous outdoor space, Jonathan Wallen photography
Don’t think I have seen this before…love it! A bookshelf surrounded tub, Eric Cohler
Dramatic and art filled, Susan Gilmore photography
Doesn’t get much prettier than this! Fern Santini
So what do you think? Do you have a favorite? I appreciate the dramatic over the top ones but wouldn’t necessarily want to live with one of them, I prefer the quieter “wow” rooms, and don’t think a room needs to shout to be noticed. There are so many beautiful things that can be done to a room to be beautiful, from the bare bones, the architectural elements to the decor, the lighting and the flooring to even the smallest things, like placing a small orchid plant on just the right place, or placing a small stack of books on an ottoman, etc……its the subtle things that make a difference. What do you think? Hope you have an enchanted day!

Getaway gorgeous

When I think of a beach or a getaway house and admittedly I think of getting away A LOT..I have  this vision of exactly how I would want it to be. Allow me to set the scene….you have had a very hectic week, either with work, the kids schedule, lots of demands, being pulled in every direction imaginable. You are utterly spent. Friday afternoon cannot arrive fast enough. It finally does…you load up your car faster than you can say “time to go” and off you are to your weekend vacation home. As you drive onto the gravel driveway….your worries and stresses fly away with the ocean or lake breeze (your imagination is the driver here) you park, take a deep breath and know you have arrived to your oasis for the weekend. The first day you get to spend all alone, its just you, your favorite bottle of wine and a book you have been dying to read…the next day the family and friends are joining you. Sound good? Sorry I ruined the fantasy. Their arrival cannot come soon enough! Refreshed, the next morning you head to the local farmers market, stock up on all the fresh days picks and prepare the afternoons rounds of appetizers and dinner which will be served al fresco of course…….

So what does this dream getaway house look like?  Lots of blue is a given to me, a fair amount of white and cream, some nice light woods, an open and airy feel, some bright colors in the right spots, even some geometric shapes in the way of pillows or unique lamps works. I see fun bunk beds that beg for your kids sleepovers, over sized banquette tables for entertaining, cozy guest rooms to ensure your guests want to return again and again (hopefully that’s a good thing) a gorgeous light kitchen with chunky marble countertops prep ready for impromptu clambakes and spur of the moment BBQS. Today is dedicated to those perfect getaway homes…a home away from home, entertaining, open, airy, and mostly relaxing spaces. There is no right or wrong..and as you can see, this is an eclectic mix. Let me know what you think, does my ideal tie in with yours? Would love to know!

Isn’t it romantic?

Happy Tuesday…….When you think of a romantic room, what comes to mind? I think of soft flowing sheer fabrics, maybe some silks, perhaps even a touch of silvery shimmery fabrics, mirrors, delicate objects, maybe some crystal with a feminine touch. A ?fireplace sure won’t hurt things. A view of the water, you won’t hear me complain. When I think of a romantic room, I see an elegant and understated, soft and serene space. Flowers of course always add romance as can the addition of music to add to the ambiance. Lighting plays an integral part in the way a room affects us and candles certainly do a great deal to add to the feeling of romance. We all have a different interpretation?of what “romantic” means to us but entering a romantic room certainly feels wonderful and is good for the soul. Today I look at romantic rooms at least through ?my eyes and here is what I see….would love to know what you think and what?you?think makes up a romantic room?

So do you have a favorite? What does a romantic room mean to?you? How would you decorate a room meant to feel romantic? I think it means different things to each of us..that’s the beauty of design and decor, the endless interpretations. I love seeing one concept through so many different eyes..its fascinating to see how we take one idea and each conceptualize it so differently. For me, romance is that last picture or a tall canopy bed draped with?an abundance of soft flowy ivory fabric…preferably with a warm tropical breeze blowing through the room..?(OK might as well throw in the Atlantic ocean beckoning in the background and while you are at it, add in the mega yacht in the distance too…lol)
Enjoy your day
