Good morning! Hope everyone had a wonderful and enjoyable weekend. Finally our heat wave broke last night…..and outside we went to alas enjoy a beautiful summer evening! I love the look of a delicate slipcovered chair, whether?it be an occasional chair in a living room, a set of dining chairs or a grouping in a living room. There is something about the crisp linen slipcovers that just does something for me. I always used to think of them as being exclusively for country french homes, shabby chic, and romantic cottage styles but slipcovers have come a long long way. They have moved well beyond the cute and charming and have crossed over big time into highly sophisticated and elegant territory.
?They work as beautifully in very traditional homes as they do in smaller cottage charmers and are found in even more transitional style homes. I also like seeing this look against rich warm woods. It is an elegant look and still brings a certain degree of texture and contrast into the room. I am considering incorporating this look into my own home somewhere somehow, maybe even on a small delicate French chair for my bathroom. There are also many variations ?on how to finish slipcovers, from ties to buttons to pleats and darts….there are endless numbers of possibilities. So today is all about the sophisticated look of using slipcovers. What do you think? Is it a look you like? I always like to know!

Well, you pulled me in with that first photo of the French chairs with the slip covers!!! I LOVE THAT LINEN LOOK anywhere in the house. The kitchen with all the white is glorious, but with the way I cook and having things FLY IN THE AIR as I sautée may not be a conducive environment for such luxury seating!!!!
Slipcovers can soften the look of a room but it depends on the space..they could look more tailored (almost like regular upholstery) in a more formal room and more like slipcovers in a relaxed environment. I love the sumptuous blue-and-white patterned English chair. Here, the slipcover makes the piece more feminine. Great post!

I love the look of slipcovers but gravitate to the more tailored styles. I always love what John Saladino does with chairs! I am planning to do two slipped wing chairs in our kitchen and the Windsor Smith image is in my inspiration files. I will also admit that I am jealous your heat streak broke….we are looking at 104 today….and for the forseeable future. I don’t think we’ve been below 100 for a high for WELL over a month. Unbelievable!
I’ve always loved the look of slipcovers, but don’t actually own any slipcovered pieces. My fear is that they’d look a little disheveled after being sat on. I guess I’m a little OCD 🙂
I love the look of the pleated slips, I can’t do ruffles but all of the others are heavenly. I pinned several of your wonderful images. I have slips on my dining room wood chairs to lighten and brighten the room. I love how I can toss them in the wash with a little bleach and they stay crisp and fresh looking. I adore a very tailored, streamlined slipcover like the Saladino ones. Also LOVE the 1st image- exquisite! As far as kids go…if you have small messy children like me, they are NOT a good idea for the breakfast room unless you want to wash them after every meal 🙂
Tina…could you suggest places to buy ready made slipcovers that are worthy of the money for those of us who may not be able to afford someone making slipcovers for us. I often see chairs that are wonderfully constructed and nice but ugly…and think if I could only slipcover that!..(especially with white duck fabric….) goes with everything! Hi! What a pretty post. I have always liked the look but had no idea they were so versatile! I got so many great ideas here. I have dated dining chairs that were fairly expensive so I think I am now going to look to have slipcovers made for them, brilliant idea! that picture of the “dining nook with a view” is a similiar feel to my own dining area so I think that is a great solution. Glad I visited today!

Happy Monday!! I saw a photo of a slipcovered couch in a home mag we get free in the mail….I was shocked to see it hadnt been ironed or steamed! It was like they took it out of the ikea package (I have the same couch so I recognized it) and threw it on for the photo shoot!
This was a timely post for me since I’m getting ready to make slipcovers for my dining room chairs. I don’t want them fussy but not too slouchy either and your images helped me to decide if I wanted cording, ties and such as embellishments so thanks for the post. Slipcovers are perfect for any season but especially the summer. Enjoy the cooler weather!
You found some very beautiful rooms featuring slip-covered chairs. I like those that looks like they’re in a cottage by the water. The nice thing about slip-covered furniture is it is readily removed for washing. This is something that is great with children and pets! Lovely.

YOur slipcover post is fantastic! I’ll have to bookmark it for the next time I want to whip up a slipcover. I think Lauren Ross was one of the biggest slipcover instigators!! She has had them for years, and that limestone family room filled with slipped furniture is hers as well!
Love slipcovers. They allow us to be more creative within a whole year if we just change them out. Adds instant warmth and coziness too. They can be relaxed or tailored I enjoy them all. Love the first one and it would be perfect in a lady’s office, bathroom, or sitting room. Great for most any decor these days, like you said, they’ve evolved.
I don’t have any slipcovered furniture in our Hamptons home, however my daughter’s chaise in her bedroom in our primary residence is a slipcovered piece. It depends on how it is tailored as to whether I’m a lover or could take a pass. Love your examples it really shows the endless possibilities.

I like them a lot! Wonderful images. I used them on many pieces in the late 90’s and early 2000’s when my kids were little. It great to see them transend so many styles and have such broud appeal! Defininately like them tailored!
Definitely a fan of the look. That is a pretty one of the blue and white club chair. It seems the slipcover covered look goes in hand with the nautical rope pendants. I have slip covered bar stools in the kitchen and they have been easy to clean.

I do have a slipcovered chair (in painter’s drop cloth on the seat & French printed grain sack on the front of the back) and a stool (in a stripe). I love all of your examples, but for my own home tend to like a more tailored slipcover. I also like the look of a tailored slip in a patterned fabric. To me, this can almost make a piece look upholstered while you still have the convenience of removing it for cleaning. This post is timely because I’ve been intending to slipcover another chair a stool for the master bath. Nice post!

I would be a wreck keeping dirty hands off of them and am not inclined to want to take the time to keep them clean. I might entertain one in MY office on MY chair…otherwise, I have a house full of men when they are all home and it’s just too ‘girlie’ for all of them! You showed some beauties though! my dilemma is that I have a large bulky sofa, and it is time for a change in my living room. But I don’t want to change out this wonderful sofa that I have. Do you have slip covers for large bulky sofas with a “camel back” to them? It has large rolled arms, and bum feet.
