Good morning, well here in NY we got socked by a blizzard of epic proportions! We are covered in white everywhere you look! Guess be careful what you wish for….I was moaning and groaning about the lack of snow, well mother nature certainly delivered and showed me whose boss! I had to share some pictures because we all know everything looks prettier in snow! We were supposed to leave for Boston today but clearly we are not going, bummer but better to be safe. Hope if the snow has impacted you, you are safe and staying inside!

This was my original post…..so it turned into a 2 for 1!
If you have been following me for a few weeks or for an entire year, by now you know I do love my orchids. They bring elegance and grace to any space they enter. Then you add a beautiful planter and the effect is dazzling. Every few months I go on an orchid binge and buy a dozen or so. Truth is even though they are pricier than a lot of other flowers,they actually end up being one of the best flower bargains because they last so long. Most cut flowers or flower plants last 2-4 weeks.
On average my orchids last I would say about 3 months, sometimes even more. So its a great investment that requires little upkeep except for water and a good amount of sun and a lot of love. I adore them in every room and my love for orchids is one reason why I buy so many planters! I don’t think you can ever have enough:) Any fellow orchid lovers out there? I buy them from a local florist but have also picked them up at the Home Depot greenhouse. And you know what, they are really nice looking, good quality plants. So here is a little recap of my orchid buying day…..
It all starts with an island (a messy one) filled with all my containers. I would do this outside if it wasn’t 10 degrees!

I do the same thing Tina!! There is a grocery store here that sells them at a very reasonable price, so I get them there usually. And I love the gardenia topiaries you have too. Don’t those blooms smell divine? We have several bushes outside but I love the small indoor ones too. I am going to be on the lookout for some here.

Your house looks so lovely.I was out yesterday before the storm(18 inches and counting here in Mass.)and couldn’t resist the orchids on my trip to Lowes.The colors were beautiful and add such a nice brightness to the rooms in the winter.

Tina cannot believe how much snow you got! Last time I saw that was when we lived in Chicago about 6 years ago. Now we only get dustings which suits me just fine but I do agree everything looks prettier in the snow especially your incredible home. Looks right out of Downton Abby~
Your orchids are also so beautiful. I love them, buy them every now and then, havent’ had a lot of luck so would welcome any tips you want to pass on. All of your containers are so perfect for them, you make it look easy! Stay safe and hope you enjoy the snow.
Love the snow pictures and the orchids. I also enjoy orchids in the house and collect containers for them. BTW, those topiaries are gardenias not magnolia.
Our local Kroger grocery has great orchids at very reasonable prices. They seem to only carry then in winter till about April here in the South. I get 4 months or so for each plant. I have never been able to get them to rebloom. I like looking at your snow just dont like to drive in it.
The snow is amazing, my kids would have so much fun in it! Here its 70 and sunny!

I adore orchids too, and have had great success with them re flowering for several years running now. My secret? Treat them mean and keep them keen! Very little water in summer and they pop up again the next year. Yours look stunning in those gorgeous planters.

Tina, love your orchids. My granddaddy use to grow orchids in a hothouse he built just as a hobby. When you place the orchids in a container, what are the next steps to finishing the look?Do you just put moss around the top?

I never tire of looking at images of your gorgeous home, it looks so pretty all dressed in snow. I’m a avid orchid grower too, I’ve got a few that have to be at least 10 years old. With the right care and sun light they really are quite hardy plants. Have a great day Tina and stay warm! Lisa

I cannot believe all of the snow that fell. Your home looks so magical in the snow! I must say it really is breathtaking, but even better if you still have power! Our winter has been really mild and not a snowflake has fallen here. I always like it for a few days at least, but not looking good for it to happen this year. Good heavens, you all did get a bunch of snow! My brother is in Boston and he says it was just wild, I’m so glad you’re safe and warm. The house is stunning, a winter tableau that is gorgeous. The orchids are also beautiful, they come in such an array of colors!

I love orchids and have a few arrangements at home all the time. I am sometimes successful at making the blooms last. Other times, I am not. In fact, I recently brought home 2 Cymbidiums from Costco. The flowers on one just wilted away. The other one is doing very well. It seems a lot of your readers are great at tending to orchid plants. May I request for a few pointers, please.
Your home is so beautiful. I wouldn’t mind being snow bound there! Just let me make some hot chocolate and cookies. I am also an orchid lover. There is a shop here in Raleigh, NC called Millie’s Orchids. She heads to Florida, loads them up, and we buy them from her shop. She adds greenery in her arrangements which adds a lot to the overall look. Some little pots of fern or philadendrom — use your imagination. She also adds more curly willow and ties them to the orchid stake with a pinch of moss. Amazingingly beautiful! I never tire of them. You’re right…..they last forever! Thanks for posting such a wonderful blog. I have been following you for over a year and I’m always excited to see what you’re doing.
I hope you were able to get an “orchid run” in before we got all this snow! The snow photos though “a little too close to home” are beautiful! It is so true about the flowering indoor plants, they are so economical. My Kalanchoe plants can last up to 6 months with very little care, and the white and green always elegant. Stay safe and warm tonight it will be in the teens!

I’m all about bringing the outdoors IN during the winter months, and those orchids are just perfect. I can’t get them to re bloom however the flowers last for weeks, making them a worthwhile purchase. Your planters are so pretty.. and always perfectly arranged.

Boy that snow sure did pile up! I guess it gave you a reason to stay in and work on orchids! I never can get them to live very long, even with the recommended ice cube per week. I will just enjoy looking at yours! – Tonya
Oh the snow is so beautiful! It reminds me of my college days in Wisconsin and Chicago. Now that I am back in my desert home, we have to drive to the snow to ski! I love orchids as well and have been able to get a few of mine to re-bloom over the years. The ice cube thing never worked for me, instead I have what I call ” water Wednesdays” where I take the plant with the plastic pot out of the container and run it under water until it is really wet. I then set it in the sink to drain as the Orchids don’t like too much water. This has always worked really well for me. Stay warm in your beautiful home Tina! Have a good weekend.

I have to say it may be epic proportions and wrecking havoc across the country, but is is bloody beautiful all the same! The photos you have posted are just breathtaking – your house, if I can call it that, looks like a chateau in France with all that lovely snow. It’s like a storybook. So magical and beautiful and I wish I was there to see it all. Hope you are keeping warm and safe though. Thanks also for the tip on the orchids. I never repot mine, but maybe I should and they would last longer!

How lovely for you to have at least one good snowfall every winter. I suppose if it snowed heavily all winter it might get rather trying, but one or two big ones must be magical. I hope you sent some to Utah as I will be over there to ski at the end of Feb! I can’t wait as this has been a VERY long hot summer with lots of fires burning on our ski mountains 🙁 I love your orchids and planter containers. Am I right in thinking that you are just placing the pots in the containers and covering them with moss?
My sons (when they were little, and sometimes now we throw it in conversation) have a game called “same but different”. And, your post is just a bit like that. We have had a very mild winter (no complaints at all here) but my kids are longing for a big snowfall like that. Your orchids are beautiful Tina. My sister owns a high end florist so I get all my flowers from her including orchids. I have learned the hard way you dont’ need to do too much to them, and I do mist them with a water bottle every week. But you should spray from top of plant pointing down not directly on each petal or leaf. I dont’ know if this is why they last so long but I normally get mine to stick around for a very long time. Your containers are beautiful. Enjoy the snow.
First off…I cannot fathom that amount of snow! EVER! We just don’t get it down here, of course! It really does make everything prettier! How is all your carrera marble holding up? We’re redoing our ensuite and I want a carrera countertop so badly on the vanity. I managed to find a beautiful carrera like tile for the floor but I’m adamant that I want the real thing on the counter. There’s nothing like it, is there?
Tina– I am a HUGE orchid fan for the very same reason–in the long run, they are a bargain–as they last for months with very little care and look beautiful!! I have also started sending them (instead of arrangements that die in a week) to friends/family for special and sad occasions. I just sent one to a friend whose sister died. I got it from a local florist near them that was recommended to me. When I called to place the order, the woman was so nice and it was sent in a Guy Wolfe pot (yes, the kind Martha Stewart uses). It was a double stem tied with ribbon and moss about halfway down the stems and again at the bottom. Gorgeous!! And it will (hopefully) remind her of her sister for the weeks ahead in a beautiful way. I have even asked my husband to get me an orchid for my birthday, Valentine’s & Mother’s Day as they can be enjoyed for so much longer.
OMGosh! I would love to experience a snow storm. What a wonderland. Love the patio furniture. I can imagine how cozy it was inside. I would have ventured outside as you did because I’d be so curious of the silence and beauty. Tina, Those first photos of your house (before the 2 feet of snow!) are my absolutely favorite of your house. There is such an elegant, magical feel to them.
Now, orchids, I am with you. So many friends of mine say they don’t know how to care for them, but I find them so easy. Water occasionally! And, I love them everywhere, too. I agree, they are economical when you think of how many weeks of fresh cut flowers you have to have to replace them.

Beautiful post… your house deserves its name…Enchanted home…it is truly a wonderland seen with its beautiful white cover. I am passionate about orchids, while living in Boston, we had an orchid greenhouse and i learned so much about orchids, went to orchid shows all over the world, purchased rare orchids. Her in Connecticut, I unfortunately do not have a greenhouse but still have orchids in almost everyroom.
Oh my gosh Tina…the snow! BUT your home looks lovely in snow. Are those Cherry Blossoms real and if so where did you find them this time of year? I KILL orchids..I love them but have no luck with them whatsoever. I buy small ones at Trader Joes for $12 so I don’t feel too bad when they kick the bucket! Your orchids are gorgeous Tina, love them myself. I have several vareities in our master bath that bloom year after year they love the steam.
We have three feet of snow and it’s still coming down like gang busters so we won’t be going anywhere for a while, it is pretty.

I adore orchids too, and have had great success with them re flowering for several years running now. My secret? Treat them mean and keep them keen! Very little water in summer and they pop up again the next year. Yours look stunning in those gorgeous planters.

Tina, love your orchids. My granddaddy use to grow orchids in a hothouse he built just as a hobby. When you place the orchids in a container, what are the next steps to finishing the look?Do you just put moss around the top?

I’m a avid orchid grower too, I’ve got a few that have to be at least 10 years old. With the right care and sun light they really are quite hardy plants.

I cannot believe all of the snow that fell. Your home looks so magical in the snow! I must say it really is breathtaking, but even better if you still have power! Our winter has been really mild and not a snowflake has fallen here. I always like it for a few days at least, but not looking good for it to happen this year. The pictures of your house and the snow look like a winter wonderland…cold but beautiful! Here in Sweet Home Alabama we’re having gorgeous sunshine and very mild weather…being a Southern girl I just don’t know if I could live in that cold climate but it is so pretty.

Good heavens, you all did get a bunch of snow! My brother is in Boston and he says it was just wild, I’m so glad you’re safe and warm. The house is stunning, a winter tableau that is gorgeous. The orchids are also beautiful, they come in such an array of colors!

WOW is right! Love orchids, but am always afraid to try my luck with them. I have a friend who always has them in her home. I would appreciate pointers on potting. Do you line your beautiful planters? As for the snow pics, I can onky say, wish I were there…just gorgeous! Be safe and enjoy!

It is so funny isn’t it…that sometimes we get a little more than we wished for…I know it’s pretty to to look at but not so fun to endure. I love orchids and have a few arrangements at home all the time. I am sometimes successful at making the blooms last. Other times, I am not. In fact, I recently brought home 2 Cymbidiums from Costco. The flowers on one just wilted away. The other one is doing very well. It seems a lot of your readers are great at tending to orchid plants. May I request for a few pointers, please.
Your home is so beautiful. I wouldn’t mind being snow bound there! Just let me make some hot chocolate and cookies. I am also an orchid lover. There is a shop here in Raleigh, NC called Millie’s Orchids. She heads to Florida, loads them up, and we buy them from her shop. She adds greenery in her arrangements which adds a lot to the overall look. Some little pots of fern or philadendrom — use your imagination. She also adds more curly willow and ties them to the orchid stake with a pinch of moss. Amazingingly beautiful! I never tire of them. You’re right…..they last forever! Thanks for posting such a wonderful blog. I have been following you for over a year and I’m always excited to see what you’re doing.
I hope you were able to get an “orchid run” in before we got all this snow! The snow photos though “a little too close to home” are beautiful! It is so true about the flowering indoor plants, they are so economical. My Kalanchoe plants can last up to 6 months with very little care, and the white and green always elegant. Stay safe and warm tonight it will be in the teens!

I’m all about bringing the outdoors IN during the winter months, and those orchids are just perfect. I can’t get them to re bloom however the flowers last for weeks, making them a worthwhile purchase. Your planters are so pretty.. and always perfectly arranged.

Oh the snow is so beautiful! It reminds me of my college days in Wisconsin and Chicago. Now that I am back in my desert home, we have to drive to the snow to ski! I love orchids as well and have been able to get a few of mine to re-bloom over the years. The ice cube thing never worked for me, instead I have what I call ” water Wednesdays” where I take the plant with the plastic pot out of the container and run it under water until it is really wet. I then set it in the sink to drain as the Orchids don’t like too much water. This has always worked really well for me. Stay warm in your beautiful home Tina! Have a good weekend.

My God Tina – just been reading about these storms in the paper today and thought of you. I have to say it may be epic proportions and wrecking havoc across the country, but is is bloody beautiful all the same! The photos you have posted are just breathtaking – your house, if I can call it that, looks like a chateau in France with all that lovely snow. It’s like a storybook. So magical and beautiful and I wish I was there to see it all. Hope you are keeping warm and safe though. Thanks also for the tip on the orchids. I never repot mine, but maybe I should and they would last longer!

How lovely for you to have at least one good snowfall every winter. I suppose if it snowed heavily all winter it might get rather trying, but one or two big ones must be magical. I hope you sent some to Utah as I will be over there to ski at the end of Feb! I can’t wait as this has been a VERY long hot summer with lots of fires burning on our ski mountains 🙁
I love your orchids and planter containers. Am I right in thinking that you are just placing the pots in the containers and covering them with moss?
My sons (when they were little, and sometimes now we throw it in conversation) have a game called “same but different”. And, your post is just a bit like that. Your home is incredible. I am in awe of the beauty! And in the snow its just magical looking. Cannot believe how much snow you got. We have had a very mild winter (no complaints at all here) but my kids are longing for a big snowfall like that.
Your orchids are beautiful Tina. My sister owns a high end florist so I get all my flowers from her including orchids. I have learned the hard way you dont’ need to do too much to them, and I do mist them with a water bottle every week. But you should spray from top of plant pointing down not directly on each petal or leaf. I dont’ know if this is why they last so long but I normally get mine to stick around for a very long time. Your containers are beautiful. Enjoy the snow.
Have to say I didn’t mind being stuck inside one bit yesterday. It was nice to be forced to stay home and enjoy the peace and quiet. Hope you did too!

First off…I cannot fathom that amount of snow! EVER! We just don’t get it down here, of course! It really does make everything prettier! I love seeing my house in the snow…the three times that it has actually snowed here, LOL! Your home looks truly stunning in it! You have also inspired me to try my hand at orchids as I’ve always been scared of them! Take care and be safe in that weather!

How is all your carrera marble holding up? We’re redoing our ensuite and I want a carrera countertop so badly on the vanity. I managed to find a beautiful carrera like tile for the floor but I’m adamant that I want the real thing on the counter. There’s nothing like it, is there?

I am a HUGE orchid fan for the very same reason–in the long run, they are a bargain–as they last for months with very little care and look beautiful!!
I have also started sending them (instead of arrangements that die in a week) to friends/family for special and sad occasions.
I just sent one to a friend whose sister died. I got it from a local florist near them that was recommended to me. When I called to place the order, the woman was so nice
and it was sent in a Guy Wolfe pot (yes, the kind Martha Stewart uses). It was a double stem tied with ribbon and moss about halfway down the stems and again at the bottom.
Gorgeous!! And it will (hopefully) remind her of her sister for the weeks ahead in a beautiful way.
I have even asked my husband to get me an orchid for my birthday, Valentine’s & Mother’s Day as they can be enjoyed for so much longer.

Those first photos of your house (before the 2 feet of snow!) are my absolutely favorite of your house. There is such an elegant, magical feel to them.
Now, orchids, I am with you. So many friends of mine say they don’t know how to care for them, but I find them so easy. Water occasionally! And, I love them everywhere, too. I agree, they are economical when you think of how many weeks of fresh cut flowers you have to have to replace them.

Beautiful post… your house deserves its name…Enchanted home…it is truly a wonderland seen with its beautiful white cover. I am passionate about orchids, while living in Boston, we had an orchid greenhouse and i learned so much about orchids, went to orchid shows all over the world, purchased rare orchids.
Her in Connecticut, I unfortunately do not have a greenhouse but still have orchids in almost everyroom.

I KILL orchids..I love them but have no luck with them whatsoever. I buy small ones at Trader Joes for $12 so I don’t feel too bad when they kick the bucket!
