Hi there and good morning….finally feeling a bit better, though I rested another day yesterday to be sure I am up to speed with all I have going on this week. Recently I told you a little about the fact that I am going to be participating in a very exciting showhouse…so that’s what this post is all about.
I was so flattered to have been asked to join the talent as one of the designers to design a space at the Ronald McDonald Showhouse this year. The opening night gala will honor design notables Candace Olsen and Nate Berkus.
This will take place on Oct.8th and we have 3 days prior to actually set up our space soup to nuts. However the planning is happening now…..I have always loved the color moss green, if you read my blog for any time you might know this:) And I really love moss green paired with a touch of antique brass and of course blue and white…truly a match made in heaven.
It is a little nerve wrecking to have to plan all this on paper as we cannot start actually decorating the space until Oct. 6th so I am trusting my vision…..I had the idea? dancing in my head and put together a mood board which looks like this-
Then looking into one of my many online albums came across this picture that cemented my decision on mossy green glossy walls!
I right away honed in on this gorgeous raised velvet fabric from Tilton Fenwick from Duralee, that rich mossy green caught my eye and I liked how it could feel a little more modern but would still be used traditionally with a beautiful navy trim for contrast-
As those ideas came together, I turned to artist extraordinaire Patricia of PVE to turn my vision into art and lo and behold just feast your eyes on these renderings,? it was such fun to see my idea jump to life! Very exciting to see these two versions…..she did a truly fabulous job and it really validated my ideas:)
Version 2-
How to choose! They are both so exquisite and what a great joy for me to see my vision come to life at the hand of Patricia’s incredible talent.
So this is a loose idea of what it will be about. I have LOTS to do, many elements to pull together, have to arrange the painter, and someone to hang the brackets. Since this is a project where everything in these spaces will be sold, getting donations from generous sponsors is very key. Here are some elements pulling themselves together-
The rug is from Safavieh…this is a super inexpensive rug (around $500)? but gives me the look I am after…form a distance almost looks like it could be an old antique right? I think it will more than achieve the effect I am after….
And here are the brackets that came in primed which I am attempting a DIY project on-
The sconces/brackets I bought as plaster unfinished only because they are quite inexpensive and trying my hand at one of my very first DIY projects and painting them antique gold. They will in essence give me ( I hope) the effect I am after without having to spend a few hundred dollars per bracket.
Here is my first bracket was done in Design Master in picture 1. It looks far better than plain old white plaster and is a really pretty pale shade of gold,? but I needed? a gold with more “oomph” to stand up to the moss green walls.
So I got another gold, this time Krylon’s gold? however that one was far too bright and “fake gold” looking to me, so tomorrow it’s off to the hardware store to try yet another “formula” (frames on bottom)-
And here is attempt 1- subtle and elegant but not enough, too dark and no “wow ” factor
And then attempt 2- way too bright, this is what I would refer to as “Trump gold” I can imagine his whole apartment just oozing in this brassy shiny gold:)
And just like Goldilocks, I am waiting for it to be “just right” this tutorial is what has inspired me to go buy black spray paint, I know I know, scary. My thoughts exactly! I also have been recommend to buy a glaze from Valspar, so will give that a whirl too:)
Started to experiment but it was getting dark but I feel I am going in the right direction….going to require a bit more practice but I don’t give up easily:)
I am donating all the blue and white and am working with several vendors on everything else. Every single item will be up for sale and all proceeds will go to the charity. I cannot think of a greater cause to donate to.? It was fun getting to the warehouse and starting to choose which pieces I will be adding to the room….
Here are just some of the blue and whites standing guard for when they get put in the room, (I played around after my seamstress gave me back the partially finished table cloth). Just waiting on trims to be put on-
Ditto these tables….a little nervous but more excited than anything to see this come to life. Going to do a finish on them and possibly a light gold glaze over them, chairs are being reupholstered in a rich dark blue velvet I already had extra off which was very handy! I will add two beautiful pillows to the chairs-
These beautiful pillows are being donated from one of my pillow manufacturers, they are perfect:)
I have been wanting to do a room in high gloss for a long time…and am now getting my chance. I chose Guacamole from Benjamin Moore, a rich mossy green which I am sure will be incredible looking in the high gloss finish and very dramatic with the gold brackets and blue and white jars. Just love this color-
After googling this color found this room painted in guacamole..pretty pretty!
I will be sure to keep you in the loop, the next time you hear about this space will be when it’s really in action and the room is actually coming together! If by chance you are in the tri state area more information will be forthcoming in case you want to come out and not only support this incredible fundraiser for Ronald McDonald but to show your love for the design community! It promises to be a really wonderful event and I cannot wait to see all the spaces:)

The room is going to be gorgeous Tina! I totally love the color scheme you picked out and all the blue and white will pop with the moss background. Looking forward to seeing the finished room!
With the gold brackets you might want to look at an antiquing glaze rather than a black spray paint. It’s a lot easier and you’ll have more control over the finish, plus it will look a lot more realistic. You can buy ready made glazes at craft/hobby stores and also Lowe’s. Good luck!
What fun and for one of my favorite charities. I once did a dark green guest room with an oriental flare including an umbrella on the wall. Everyone loved it as I am sure they will your room. Your taste is wonderful and has a timeless feel about it. I am sure it will be one of the favorites. Your blog is my favorite and look forward to it especially on Sundays. Looking fabulous Tina, you have a terrific eye for combinations.
When I was doing Folk art, we painted the white base orange, yellow or red before we added the gold. To knock the brightness back, we used burnt Umber applied over the piece then rubbed back to the desired effect. I seem to remember that it was an oil based burnt Umber over acrylic paints. The burnt umber is much warmer colour to use than black which is a bit dead. I hope that helps.
I loved Trump Gold! Perfect description. I will never think of it any other way now. 😉
To mimic true gold leaf with spray paint… You should first spray the item with red paint or a combination of red and rust brown. Let dry.
Then you hit with some gold leaving some red peeking through. Distress with steel wool.
You are mimicking “bole” the clay adhesive ,used by gold leafers.
Your room is going to be gorgeous, Tina and what a special cause, very generous of you!! Another thought for the sconces is using the matte finish and then get a brighter Rub n Buff, ( my framer uses it all the time) to just do a bit of highlighting on some areas! Brava!! Love the moss gloss with blue and white!!

I think you have a huge hit on your hands and on your drawing board. I’ve always loved a good mossy green.
We have this color on the walls of our family room and it goes so well with the draperies; black background with a Magnolia & Honeysuckle print. I’ve worked in a sage green buffalo check and a tarragon green on cream toile and voila’ we have a wonderful space for relaxing. Not a speck of blue!
My husband wanted “guy decor” for the family room. He still won’t listen when I tell him that plate sized Magnolia blooms are not “guy decor” but who cares, we’re both happy with the results. I love that I can now show off all my Wedgwood Napoleon Ivy Queens ware and have it be the star in this room. Also blends right in with the coffee glazed kitchen cabinets and the green granite counters. Even though I did abandon blue in this room, I have learned so much from you about how to group complimentary patterns instead of matchy-matchy prints. Thank you Tina, you should have a television show, but then we would have to share you with the world!

Try gold leaf from Michaels and Annie Sloan Dark Wax. It will do the trick perfectly.

Rub-n-buff will give you a better gold. A little goes a long way, but the results are excellent.
Ditto Lynn’s suggestion; Rub n’ Buff – easy application, lot’s of color options, very forgiving, great results!
You could also try some “Rub ‘n Buff” (another wax product) to tone down the gold. Nice colors!
