Hello….wow it is our very first By Invitation Only for 2015! Still cannot believe it’s the new year…… this is a really wonderful, unique and thought provoking theme to kick off the new year. As you know by now, once a month the group of bloggers who are part of “By Invitation Only” get together to interpret a theme, generally we all take turns coming up with an idea. This months made me pause and really think about how I was going to handle this one…..
The question is if the world suddenly could only rely on a bartering system what talents would I have or be able to offer and the catch? is without electricity or technology. Ouch. Double ouch. Now I could serenade the world with my singing voice and spread the love (though it seems I am the only one who thinks I can rival Celine) but seriously I started thinking and doing some self reflection on what I think I am half way decent at.
The upside here is that? I am definitely a sharer at heart, I like sharing what I know and helping others its just my nature so? these are a few of the ideas? I came up with……
?Helping people make their homes more beautiful! Duh, this is an absolute passion of mine and it never gets old, I so love the challenge of being able to help someone create a beautiful, inviting and elegant home. While the technology we all have and love might not be omnipresent there are so many more details we can add to a home that go a lot further in terms of sheer enjoyment? than having a computer or cell phone handy. Some of the “must haves’ for me and services I would offer would be……
1. It has to start with creating cozy, beautiful ,elegant spaces within out home. A scrumptious bed is an absolute necessity!!? We spend nearly half our lives in bed, so you better and should make it a great one!
Plus without technology you will be doing a lot more sleeping so make it comfy! Moving onto other rooms like creating an inviting and cozy family room imaginable, afterall you will be doing a lot of reading and board game playing? in there! I love playing with fabrics and would certainly and happily lend my services as a “fabric fairy”….
A pretty nightstand that has a few treasured pictures, a pretty little bud vase are staples for me. Guess the lamp and phone can go though or at least stay for decoration:)
Creating an inviting home does not only apply to the indoors! I would help create cozy nooks in the outdoors as well…..
2. I would love to help other learn how to create a beautiful kitchen that you will actually enjoy and anticipate? working in. And let’s face it without technology chances are you are going to be doing a whole lotta cooking! I love rustic elegant European touches like copper, stone, old cutting boards, pretty little containers to hold spices, etc….
3. An inviting bath with a great soaking tub. Again, without the technology that so many of us consume ourselves with you will have an abundance of free time and chances are you will find more time to luxuriate soaking in a wonderful tub, sounds great to me!
4. Surround yourself by what you love would be one of my mantras. In my case it is blue and white porcelain…you might know that:) I love it and enjoy it so much, that when I walk in a room and see it,? it literally makes me happy:)
So I would encourage everyone to think about what does it for them and to slowly build a collection, adding a little bit of whatever it is they love to each space in their home as I have done in mine……
5. I would want to help someone learn about the art of setting a pretty table and sitting down to one every night! With all that free time on their hands (sans technology) there would be ample time to learn the fine points of table setting and lingering over meals and engaging in lively conversation without a phone in sight……sounds good to me!
6.? Another thing I would offer are cooking classes and developing a “back to the farm” palette. I would love to take them to local farms and oogle over all the fresh produce and let them experience everything from? a still warm tomato just off off the vine to a peach that is so juicy and sweet it cannot help but make you smile!
Plus don’t even get me started on the joys of hitting a farmstand and being able to buy fresh cut flowers…those are simply the best!!
7. Not that I am claiming to be an expert of any kind but I do love to cook and have certainly created my own little arsenal of meals and dishes that I would like to think I have mastered. Lots of great? comfort foods, lots of salads and soups,? healthy seafood dishes and I do love my tapas ideas so I feel like I could offer some expertise in this area particularly for those who don’t like to cook or maybe are intimidated by the process.
It doesn’t have to be fussy but it does have to be good and what fun it would it be returning from the farm stands with all of our fresh ingredients ready to roll…….
So that just about sums up the bartering service I think I could offer, I might call my little service “An enchanted life”as it would encompass more than just the home….I would run my little farm stand tours and then reconvert back in my kitchen to make a great farm to table meal as a group. The interior design services would be one on one.? Maybe hold little classes on the fine art of entertaining and creating pretty tablescapes. They would be casual settings with wine and good food!? And who knows maybe throw in singing lessons as a extra special bonus lol:)
Truly it doesn’t take much, it is a delicate balance of surrounding yourself with things you love and items that make you happy in helping to create a warm and inviting atmosphere.
The irony with this post as I was putting this all together is that I realize our senses would be heightened in a new unfamiliar way without the added distraction of technology. No matter what we are doing or where we are, it seems as though we have our phones or iPads or some other gadget within reach always luring us away, perhaps too conveniently.
Without that, imagine the delight in even the simplest things like smelling a freshly delivered bucket of peaches or enjoying the scent of fresh cut flowers, going home and lighting a candle in a favorite corner and sitting to read a book or a magazine, luxuriating in a bubble bath with nothing but the birds chirping as the backdrop. Don’t know about you,? but I feel calmer already! I am kind of liking this idea afterall:) How about a day of no technology? Think people would go for it?
I have to admit I would be one of the first to sign up….think too many have never had a taste of the simple pleasures in life and I think this post proves they are very much? as pleasurable if not more than technology! What do you think about this idea? Tell me all about it…..
Thanks for stopping in, wishing you a wonderful day. Be sure to stop by over at Splenderosa (click here), the doyenne of our special group and discover how others have interpreted this unique and fun theme! These are guaranteed to be an interesting and entertaining range of posts. Until next time……
I would love to have you teach on the topic of the fine art of entertaining and creating beautiful tablescapes. Maybe starting with a luncheon for girlfriends! I also appreciate your generosity in sharing so much information with us!
Beautifully done Tina and you would be just the right person to make others homes warm and inviting!
I would start painting again…it has been a passion forever and simply got lost in the events of these past few years. There is still that flicker of a flame inside though!
SIGN ME UP for your classes now!! What fun that would be!!! Although I would prefer to do it WITH electricity or technology. Have a wonderful day, Tina!! xoxo
You are so right about surrounding yourself with things you love. I absolutely fell in love with Blue and White more than 20 years ago when I first was married and establishing our home. As we moved up in life and size of home I continued to collect. However, I asked for the assistance of a designer to help with our new home (about 13 years ago), I regret she did not share our passion for Blue and White and persuaded me to put most of my collection in storage or give it away! Luckily, I ignored her advise and just stored the pieces. Discovering your blog earlier this year has truly revived my love for those pieces. Over the past several months I have been redecorating our home (it was time.) The Blue and White has returned. I have added items from your shop and will continue to build out my collection. Your photos are inspiration and food for my soul. Thank You for your creativity and encouragement.
Thanks Tina, this is a wonderful post today. I think you should consider doing a book on “entertaining” at home. I can imagine page after page of your beautiful tablescapes, recipes, ideas for center pieces and so much more.
Oh, Tina, what a lovely way to think, but how very different things would really be! We’d all be slaving away in rustic kitchens, feeding that wood stove, having no refrigeration for all the wonderful food you talk about, having to build fires in the fireplaces and then keep feeding them for warmth, drawing our water from a well by hand and heating it on that wood stove for that beautiful soak in the tub. Making our own soap with lye, washing clothes by boiling water in a big kettle outside, scrubbing them on a scrub-board and hanging them on a line outside in all kinds of weather, ruining our eyes at night by trying to read by the light of a kerosene lamp. Our husbands would be slaving away in some menial job (or at least most of them would be), and would come home dirty and sweaty and unbelievably tired. And do you know how you’d get your chicken? You’d have to raise them and then wring their necks and pluck their feathers and cut them up to cook them. You see, I’m old enough to remember having lived this way, and I think modern technology is a wonderful thing. Even wealthy families had hardships compared to those in modest circumstances now! Post this or not, I won’t mind, but there’s another side, always.
I love reading your posts, not only because you share beautiful things, but especially, because you’re a beautiful person. I’ve learned so much with you!
a day without technology sounds wonderful + the harsh reality comes in the comment from Barbara Tompson + that does sound awful. xxpeggybraswelldesign.com
Tina, I hope that no matter what happens, the world will always value people who can make things beautiful, which you certainly do! And I love how you put it all together here. Such a lovely take on the topic. As someone who has been lucky enough to be a guest in your home, I know you have a true talent for making things warm and inviting.
I had to skip this round. Feel like I’m missing out a party, but having a somethings gotta give kind of week. Lots of good stuff happening….
Here’s to a world that will always need beauty! XOXO
Your bed linens are gorgeous…I know you said where they are from, right? I just can’t remember. And looking at your lovely food has me so hungry already!!!
Tina
I love love the idea of sharing our different passions. Why don’t you set up a section on your site to do just that. I am so far away from you here in Nashville Tn. it would be hard to get to you. I would love to do some classes. Can we do that by video conferences or by sharing pictures.
I have some great ideas as well. I have been decorating for friends and family for years. We could share the pictures etc on the web page along with yours. Step by step instructions etc. Little short tips and pictures on tablescapes, putting together urns and greens for the holidays, doing mantels, vignettes and anything flowers and gardens… anything really depending on the season. Lets share together… get it…. from the south to the north east and west.
I so look forward to you posts. I get a cup of coffee and sit down to enjoy…. I so love the internet we could not connect ever before like we do now …. thanks so much for sharing. Keep us posted on what you decide to do.
So many lovely pictures of your home. Thank you for sharing. I think you’d do just fine without the electricity and technology. By the way, your chopped brussel sprout salad with almonds was a HUGE hit at Thanksgiving. More pillows are on their way to you right now. The Loggia with fire lit looks amazing! As does the rest of your house. The bathrooms are so luxurious. And I love the monogram touches throughout.

Enjoyed this post, Tina. I do wish we could all take a technology break at least one or two days a month. I recently began computer-free Sundays, and the difference it has made in my stress level is incredible.
This topic made me pause too. You’ve certainly chosen a beautiful commodity to barter. Everyone wants and needs their home to be inviting and lovely. Sign me right up. Singing lessons too? Bravo!
Surround yourself with things you LOVE.
I like that and I have done just that!
A day without phones, iPads, computers etc…………would be a welcome retreat!I wonder if one day in OUR LIFE TIME it will be done???!!!

Your home and design aesthetic is simply beautiful. I love your use of Blue & White…so classic and timeless. I would love to have you design my home and learn about tablescapes and entertaining. I love reading your posts, and viewing your beautiful photo’s. Thank you.
Tina, I hope you and others didn’t take my earlier comment as anything other than it was, an immediate reaction. Your blog just reminded me of how far I have come in my 80 years to be able to enjoy your blog as probably my favorite, and your home as beyond beautiful, and to be able to actually obtain some of the beautiful blue & white from your lovely online shop. I do have to say, though, that it is from profits my professor husband made after he retired by investing in a lot of technology stuff! I guess in life we have to take the bitter with the sweet. As far as the actual theme of the blog, I might be able to help you with the singing lessons and teach people how to knit and do needlepoint.
Your posts are always so beautiful. When I see blue and whites, I immediately relax and feel content. I feel the same way when I look at your photographs and design. Thank you for sharing, the tonic for my soul!
Your pictures are amazing. I love how you fixed up your stove, would love you to do a post on how to do that, mine could use some tidying up,
I love your blue and white collection and your passion. The beauty you share is a highlight of my morning Tina! Tina,
Thank-you. You share so much and inspire so many great things and I for one can attest that you set out and accomplish what you intend to and do it all with a great “Joie de Vivre!” I would barter my artwork gladly for any of your classes but what I love most is how your “over the top” self just radiates such an open heart. I think many people would gladly love to learn how to conquer their fears in the kitchen, in the home decorating, entertaining and sprinkling love all around.
One dear friend is in crisis mode as she prepares to empty her nest and downsize. Love for you to teach a class on this topic. I think the later years of life can be so scary for many, when it should be a time of learning and embracing what one loves.
This year my word is “believe” and I can honestly see you setting up an on-line “The Enchanted Home” show like the Prairie woman. You really are amazing and share so much which is an art. Thank-you.

I’d take any of your classes, Tina, and just love the first image of your bedroom?absolutely gorgeous!! This was such a fun exercise and got me thinking too?happy Wednesday!
Love this Tina. Just from “knowing” you through your writing, it is so clear that you love to share. I really love seeing your house photos, especially your kitchen because you can tell it is used to create great times with family and friends!

Dear Tina,
Beautiful, beautiful images of interiors ??. I am now a little envious of your home and of your bartering skills !!!!! XXXX
What lovely spaces! I might not even miss electricity if I could live in that beauty.
As always beautiful ideas Tina! I loved the time before cell phones came. I would love your classes, trips and ideas! Sounds wonderful!!!
