Hi as many of you know I was on a mini vacation last week, it was a “girlfriends” trip and what fun we had. No offense to husbands out there, but when girlfriends get together it is just so easy, effortless, anything goes, no schedule of sorts…you get the picture!? It was 3 days of just fun fun fun and getting to enjoy the most spectacular weather was a huge bonus:)

Spring in Newport is fabulous, but truthfully it is in all the seasons. I took a lot of pictures (as always) and am offering very little narration as most speak for themselves. We stayed in the majestic and so very elegant The Chanler at Cliff Walk? and I truly cannot recommend it highly enough.

It is Newport’s answer to The Planters Inn in Charleston, The Carlisle in NY, you get the picture. Sandy of You May Be Wandering , the travel agent I cannot recommend highly enough, took care of all of our arrangements and seriously from start to finish..it was perfect. If you have a Newport trip or any other for that matter in your future, I definitely recommend using Sandy! The rooms were dreamy,? service was a “10” and location a winner, just doesn’t get better!

Here are a few things I suggest doing whether or not you have been 10 times or this is your first time-

EATS-

White Horse Tavern, had the most divine meal, I would give it the highest rating. Housed in one of Amercia’s oldest taverns, this is a special place to wine and dine and a must do when in Newport.

Black Pearl- a popular place downtown which offers inside and outdoor seating.

The Mooring- A lively very large place on the wharf, good seafood, great for lunch and dinner

For breakfast, our hotel’s restaurant was superb. We loved every bit and the setting overlooking the sea could not have been lovelier.

Clark Cook House- Another iconic restaurant that has been there for a long time. there are several different spots within this establishment, from more formal dining all the way to a candy shop:)

STAY-

The Chanler at Cliff Walk is the quintessential idea of elegant Newport living. Built in a historic mansion, this majestic property boasts 20 different guest rooms, each uniquely and beautifully decorated. It is ideal for couples, adults, a girlfriends trip, and older kids in my opinion.

It is very stately and elegant, not the kind of place you would see young children running through the hallways in. The location is fabulous and it being right on Cliff Walk makes this a walkers dream! Every little amenity has been carefully thought out, from all kinds of snacks/drinks you are not charged for to great Molton Brown products, to a TV in the bathroom to an excellent turndown service:)

I would probably not recommend it for a family with young kids. For a young family I would suggest Castle Hill, which is also very elegant, has more activities and amenities suited for families with younger kids and also offers wonderful family beach cottages by the sea, it is further out (a little more isolated).

TO DO

Of course, the mansions are a huge draw, The Breakers, Elms, Marble House and Rosecliff are in my opinion the most spectacular and though I have seen them several times, every time I go, I see them with a new set of eyes.? I suggest 2 mansions a day…otherwise it’s too much beauty for one day:)

Driving or walking down Bellevue Ave is like waltzing down the corridors of time to a more genteel era and I highly recommend it. A walk (it is nearly 4 miles long and an easy walk) on Cliff Walk is a must do….it is beyond spectacular and a wonderful way to see the seaside “cottages”, it was actually one of my favorite parts of our trip, coffee in hand, outrageous views,? good friends….doesn’t get better!

The Green Animals Topiary Garden in Portsmouth was on our list but unfortunately it was closed until late May Just gives us a reason to go back!

If you know someone, have a drink over at the NY Yacht Club or Baileys Beach, both iconic Newport stops which have surprisingly good food and incredible vistas of the ocean.

Of course a little retail therapy is a must…..some fun shops were, Franklin and Co (Newport Lamp and Shade Co)., there were some cute shops on Spring St, Newport Armory? and then there is a whole host of touristy- type shops like the Newport Collection Store, etc….

And here are my pictures (sit down there’s a lot of them)!

Gorgeous The Chanler and the rooms/public areas…..

This was one room’s charming courtyard….

Nearly all have fabulous views

My friends room-

IMG_7288 IMG_7289 IMG_7292 IMG_7293 IMG_7294 IMG_7295 IMG_7296

And my room with the most beautiful terrace and view…..

IMG_7299 IMG_7301 IMG_7302IMG_7304 ? IMG_7306 IMG_7311 IMG_7312 IMG_7313 IMG_7315 IMG_7317 IMG_7318 IMG_7319 IMG_7383 IMG_7384 IMG_7388 IMG_7392 IMG_7394 IMG_7395

A few pictures from around the hotel….

IMG_7321 IMG_7326 IMG_7578 IMG_7579 IMG_7580

IMG_7550 IMG_7560

And then we move onto the glorious mansions (I could not help myself from “sneaking” some pictures) hey, after all it investigative research

The grand Marble House and yes it is built of solid marble, just “beyond”…..

IMG_7327 IMG_7328 IMG_7329 IMG_7331 IMG_7332 IMG_7341 IMG_7343

But it was this kitchen that completely blew me away…..just ‘wow”!

BIMG_7344 IMG_7345 IMG_7346 IMG_7347 IMG_7348 IMG_7349

This sink could double as a bathtub for Mr. Teddy-

IMG_7352 IMG_7354

The Elms is majestic, no two ways about it….I swear felt like I lived there in a former life, it was like I remembered giving parties there, sleeping in that bedroom, etc…..(if my husband and boys are reading this, surely they are giving this statement the mighty eye roll)! The grounds were just “beyond” and this pagoda tea house had me dreaming…

IMG_7355 IMG_7356 IMG_7358 IMG_7361 IMG_7364 IMG_7366

Solid marble everywhere, this level of workmanship simply no longer exists!

IMG_7367 IMG_7407 IMG_7414 IMG_7415 IMG_7416 IMG_7417 IMG_7418

IMG_7419 IMG_7420 IMG_7439 IMG_7440 IMG_7442 IMG_7444

Now this is a backyard!

IMG_7445 IMG_7447 IMG_7448 IMG_7449 IMG_7453 IMG_7454 IMG_7455 IMG_7456 IMG_7459 IMG_7460

Can you believe this was once the stables at The Elms? Yes you can say it, I was a little obsessed wit this “cottage”

IMG_7461 IMG_7462 IMG_7463 IMG_7467 IMG_7470 IMG_7475 IMG_7476 IMG_7478 IMG_7479 IMG_7480 IMG_7483 IMG_7485

The imposing gates that belong to The Breakers….you know you have “arrived” when you enter these imposing gates

IMG_7490 IMG_7493

Almost hard to imagine that the Breakers was once referred to as a “cottage” and was used only 6-8 weeks during an entire year!

IMG_7494 IMG_7495

Then I saw this and yes, I would have been hanging with the staff as you would not have been able to get me out of this kitchen:)

IMG_7497 IMG_7499 IMG_7504 IMG_7505 IMG_7506

IMG_7514 IMG_7509 IMG_7507 IMG_7524 IMG_7523

And beautiful Rosecliff (my brother in law got married here and let me tell you the weddings are fabulous)!

IMG_7530 IMG_7533 IMG_7535 IMG_7536 IMG_7544

If you are still with me, some assorted pictures from “around town”

IMG_7368 IMG_7370 IMG_7372 IMG_7375 IMG_7397 IMG_7398 IMG_7399 IMG_7400 IMG_7401 IMG_7403 IMG_7404 IMG_7525 IMG_7526 IMG_7540 IMG_7541

IMG_7590 IMG_7587 IMG_7584 IMG_7583 IMG_7582 IMG_7551

And join us on our walk along Cliff Walk and take in the spectacular scenery along the way……

IMG_7568? IMG_7566 IMG_7564 IMG_7563 IMG_7562 IMG_7561 IMG_7576 IMG_7570 IMG_7569 IMG_7577

How amazing is this small sun room/gazebo built at the very end of one persons property overlooking the Atlantic! (I was thinking I could do my blogging from there:)

Finally on our last day there I picked up this book, Living Newport as a keepsake of my trip and might I say it is FABULOUS. I had no idea it would be this beautiful….filled with the most spectacular pictures, it illustrates the Newport lifestyle so beautifully through all four seasons.

In addition to drooling over the pictures, I have also read almost half of it so far and am totally fascinated (includes so many interesting modern day tidbits including the family who took over and restored the iconic Hammersmith Farm amongst so much more). A truly beautiful coffee table book that shows how residents today are still living in a bygone era…quite fascinating! Click here for info.

Well I am drooling all over this post! I’m headed to Newport for my first visit next month on a trip with the Visiting Gardens of The Garden Club of America. I can hardly wait! I have Bettie Pardee’s first book and have just about worn out the pages – her garden is on our tour! We will get to have dinner in the Pagoda and attend the opening gala of the Newport Flower Show. The Topiary Garden in on our tour along with many private gardens as well as the famous cottages. Thanks for all the eating and shopping trips. I have your post bookmarked for reference next month!

Stunning photos, Tina! Newport is indeed a very special and beautiful place. Those mansions or summer cottages exemplify the best of the best. It’s been a long time since I visited Newport – will want to stay at the Chanler next time. What amazing rooms and views!! Thanks for the tour. Cheers

Newport is fabulous. I have been vacationing there for over 20 years. The flower show is a must for me! I have been to all except for 2 or 3. The vendors at the end of the show are what I look forward to as well as the various arrangements. There is so much yo do and see .

What a wonderful coincidence that you posted this…my husband and I just found out we need to be up there this weekend for a cocktail party. After looking at your pictures we will definitely stay and make a whole weekend out of it. Thanks so much!

I love Newport.Don’t you find it interesting how the style of the old bathrooms is basically what we are trying to replicate today with subway tile and marble. How you had a great time.

Newport is definitely one of the most spectacular towns on earth. My husband’s best friend has lived there with his wife for years so we are fortunate to get to visit them often. It is really special to get to live like a local when we visit and get the locals perspective on everything. For this reason I have never stayed in a hotel in Newport. Thanks for a peek inside the best one! BTW, a post on Newport can never be too long.

Good morning Tina,
I do hope you waved as you drove by Little Compton!
Those kitchens! Amazing. It was lovely to see the interior of The Chanler.
Living as close as I do, I have to make it a point to see some of the amazing cottages.
Thank you for reminding me.
Cheryl
Again, those kitchens.

Tina,
As always, you never cease to amaze your followers. The hotel you stayed at has that “Tina Touch” to it , stately and elegant. My sister went to college there and I had spent many weekends visiting. As that was in another lifetime, seems Newport has now come full circle again. I can bet that there are new “Mansions” that have been built.
LOVED the kitchens, the copper pots are eye candy. But I am grateful I was not the one who worked in them.
Thank you for the travel show, being homebound for a while makes me feel I have been there.
Again Thank you for sharing.
Leona

Beautiful! Newport has moved up on my list of places I want to go!

I was looking at some photos of Kathie Lee Gifford’s house, and she has a gazebo and chairs in a point on her property overlooking the ocean – it’s spectacular!

WOW! Such a nice way to start my day with a cup of coffee..your post was magnificent….

Tina, girl trips are just the best!! The architecture, the scenery, the ambiance…,so perfect! Living Newport is a spectacular book, I agree!

Thanks so much for sharing all of your beautiful pictures! The Marble House reminded me of Paris! I’ve never been to Newport, but have now included it on my list of places to visit.

Oh Lawd….. your accommodations look positively heavenly!!! Newport is one of my favorite places in the whole world. Fortunate for me, it’s only an hour away. I’ve been to a couple of the restaurants you mentioned and loved them. Your pics are great. Did you use your new camera? Have a wonderful week.

Tina, this looks like the perfect girlfriends trip! I LOVE Newport and am excited to get to see it again with all of your beautiful photos! I can see why you would be in love with any one of these cottages, they are simply stunning!

Have a great day!

Good morning Tina,

Beautiful photos of Newport.
I feel like I’ve been on vacation after looking at your pictures!

Have a great day

Cathy R

One of my favorite places – been there so many times and still cannot get enough. Also, I have stayed at The Chanler and completely agree with you – I just love it!!!

Hi Tina,

So glad you had a fun getaway with the girls! I love Newport. It’s only 15 mins. from Logan’s University so it makes a great day trip when I visit her. My favorite mansion is Rosecliff and I love Cliffwalk!

Love,
Deb xo

What a picture perfect weekend to go to Newport and it was probably a bit cooler than Lowell, MA where we had to watch the boys race in 88 degrees on Sunday! We love The Black Pearl and make it a point to visit whenever we’re in town. The cliff walk is a must and so is window shopping in town. Sounds like you had an amazing time, Tina!
xxoo

Time with “just the girls” is the best isn’t it? I’ll be doing a little of that this evening and I can’t wait. Sandy did an incredible job of getting you into the BEST places!! The view from your room looked spectacular and the room itself was fit for a Princess (which we ALL are, right?, ha) .. so don’t worry when our boys roll their eyes:) As for the home tours, we’ve been in several homes in the South and most recently Charleston, and couldn’t take ANY photos!! Your pics are such a treat. I ALWAYS enjoy touring these old plantations .. if only the walls could speak.. The kitchens are amazing and I can just imagine all the cooking that went on. So fun Tina.. thanks for sharing your pictures.

Frankly, I would have been tempted to stay planted in that amazing room, but I am glad you went out to see the sights and thank you for sharing them. I love a great girls trip and this one looks like it was over the top.

oh Tina.. what a splendid post you did .. I am intrigued.. what was inside the little box on the bed.. too pretty.. thanks for showing us the fun some girls have.. ps.. I’ve got a fabulous tour to India, Rajasthan in November, 2016.. ?.. you girls would love it! x hugs from me and Brisbane..

Wow! What beauty and grandeur from another era, but right in our backyard. I have been to my cousin’s wedding at Ocean Cliff and stayed there 4th of July the bicentennial year and there was a parade of tall ships right in front of the mansion. What a wonderful place Newport is, and your photos were awesome. I have never been on the cliff walk, but I will plan to do so this year.
xo

Looks absolutely lovely, Tina. So glad you got to getaway. I couldn’t agree more, there is nothing like a girls trip. I don’t think I’ve ever laughed as hard as when I was with my girls a few weeks ago! Newport is some where I’ve always wanted to visit and it looks like the perfect spot to explore with girlfriends. How wonderful to step back into a gilded time – looks like you could have had tea with Edith Wharton or one of her characters. XOXO

We usually travel “south” to find our gem destinations (and there are plenty!), but I’ve been wanting to go “north” for awhile now.
Newport would be a dream trip , so now you have me planning …
Last weekend, we did go to NYC to see “An American in Paris” at the “Palace Theatre” . “Enchanting”…
do not miss this Broadway show – it was fabulous !
Thank you Tina for sharing such beauty !
