Hi there, decided to start a new series, called Design Details which sill focus in on any number of details related to interior design. Could be a current trend in paint color, use of florals, wallpaper, furniture styles that are en vogue, etc…you get the idea. I will do one-two of these monthly, it’s always fun to share what has caught my attention and I love hearing what you have to say on the matter.

Today is all about painted trim. A look I happen to love and did well before it was so popular (in my home 20 years ago!). Today, it seems to be all the rage and with good reason, when done right it’s fabulous and elevates just about any space to allow it to feel much more customized. So today I am sharing some examples that I think exemplify this look really well. Curious what you think?

So, have I made a compelling argument for using colored trim? I think so! I plan to use this detail on a few rooms when our renovation is complete. I think, personally, its most effective and gives max wow factor when done in a few choice spots (not every room). I love it for a bedroom, study and dining room. OK, now it’s your turn to weigh in. Always love to hear what you think! Until next time…

I’m so glad you did this post!! I’ve been wanting to do this in our family room. I’m struggling with how much painted trim is too much?!!? I have built in bookcases, fireplace with over mantel mill work as well as wide mill work around the windows and French doors!!! Just wondering if that is too much painted trim?!!? Thinking about something in the green family with neutral walls. I would love your thoughts.

The painted trim and wallpaper look has been around forever.. And the trim painted same color as walls. Think Victorian, Colonial, Country Living, Mediterranean. It’s what you like for your home. One person may prefer mahogany for library room and another person might prefer lacquered panel.

Tina, this is such a great post, so many good visuals. I agree this look has gotten very very popular recently I’m seeing it everywhere.!

I really like it for bedrooms and dining rooms, I think it’s too much for living rooms and much larger spaces. Of course, that is my own personal opinion.

i’m also happy you will turn this into a new series because I love your take on design

I want to apply this to my daughters bedroom, redo in a soft pink, so many good ideas here, thank you.

You are absolutely right about painted trim. I’ve been doing it for over 30 years in different applications. Sometimes using the same color on walls and trim in different sheen levels also creates great results!

I love these posts that you do and I love that you inspire us with ideas. I know it is a lot of effort but you are so talented and so appreciated.

I really like the painted trim look! I have never done this in my homes. I just might have to try it in a few rooms in our lake house. It really does add some warmth and coziness to a room! Thank you for inspiring me! PS Love your office and mud room in PB!!

Absolutely love what you have done with your office/mudroom. Can you supply a source for beautiful lampshades to improve the “standard” white shade that comes with every lamp.

I love EVERYTHING you do! Thanks for the new series. I would love to try painting a rooms trim/window but too scared to try it. Plus, I have white window shutters not sure they would look good from the outside painted a different color.

Really, Really enjoyed this post !! I’m surprised at how much I love the painted trim & think I’ll redo my bathroom using this idea !! Thanks for the inspiration !! ❤️
